Lieutenant-colonel Richard Dalgliesh, esquire, was a British-born industrialist, businessman and engineer, originally from Scotland.

A successful businessman

In 1874 and 1875, Dalgliesh was making soil samples on Asfordby Hill (part of Melton Mowbray) along with engineer Howard Aston Allport, son to railway magnate, James Joseph Allport. In December 1875, Dalgliesh, still a young engineer, established the Holwell Iron Works. The first furnace was set up six years later[1]. The Iron Works kept on working till the 1950s.

He became Deputy Lieutenant of Leicestershire[2] in 1907[3] as well as High Sheriff of Leicestershire that same year. Furthermore, he was Justice of the Peace[4].

He was a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB).

In 1920, he bought Wyndham Lodge in order to establish a hospital for men wounded during World War I[5]. The hospital unveiled on 19th January 1922 in presence of Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester[6].

Family life

Son of David Dalgliesh, esquire, from Carsethorne (Dumfriesshire)[4], he married on 12 March 1867 Mary Pearson, daughter of John Pearson, esquire, of Nottingham[4], of whom two sons, Reginald Hugh (1868-1913)[4] and Arthur Oswald (1872-1930)[7].

He settled in Asfordby with his family and lived there until his death in 1922.
