Dhoop (Hindi: धूप,pronounced ['dʱu:p], English: Sunshine) is a 2003 Indian film directed by the national award winning director Ashwini Chaudhary. The film stars Om Puri and Revathi and is based on the true story of Captain Anuj Nayyar, MVC and his family.
Plot
[edit]The movie is based on the events surrounding the death of Capt Anuj Nayyar, MVC of 17 Jat Regiment of the Indian Army, who was killed in anti insurgency operations in the southwest sector of Tiger Hill on July 5, 1999 as part of the Kargil conflict. The story of the Kapoor family in the film depicts the real events that happened in the lives of the Nayyar family[1][2][3].
Om Puri plays the role of Prof S K Kapoor, a professor of economics of the Delhi School of Economics, and the father of Capt Rohit Kapoor. Revathi plays the role of Sarita Kapoor, a librarian at Delhi University and Capt Kapoor's mother. Gul Panag plays the role of Peehu Verma, his fiancee.
The storyline of the movie takes place between 1999-2002, beginning with the death of Captain Kapoor while successfully defeating insurgents to capture Pt 4875 on the western side of Tiger Hill, Kargil.
The news is a huge shock to his family and the first half of the film portrays their attempts to cope with their grief. They recieve messages of condolence from various high government offcials as they attempt to come to terms wth their loss.
As compensation for the loss of their son, the government allots them land to set up a petrol pump (gas station). Mrs Kapoor feels disinterested in such an offer, however her husband and Peehu feel it might be a worthy site to commemorate the memory of Rohit and decide to take up the offer.
However, as they attempt to make this a reality, they encounter massive corruption and red tape at various levels of Indian bureaucracy. The rest of the film is devoted to their struggle against this immensely corrupt system as they try to achieve their dream keeping their integrity intact.
Reception
[edit]The film was a low budget release and did not make any great records at the box office. However, its basis on a moving true story, and excellent acting by a fine acting cast lead to huge critical acclaim[4].
Om Puri's superb portrayal of the courageous Prof Kapoor and Revathi's sensitive depiction of his wife are particularly notable among a slew of other substantial contributions from a stellar supporting cast. The movie was also the cinematic debut for Gul Panag.
The film also has an evocative sound track with songs sung by Jagjit Singh, Hariharan, Shreya Ghoshal and the Wadali brothers.
Inspiration
[edit]The film is an account of the inspiring struggle of Prof Nayyar and his family against entrenched systemic corruption[5]. His dream was finally realised with the setting up of the perol pump named as Kargil Heights, in the Vasundhara Enclave area of New Delhi[6][7]
Prof Kapoor's struggles continued for several years, and the film serves to highlight the appalling treatment meted out to the families of courageous soldiers who gave their lives protecting their nation and its citizens.
