The Arbitration Committee (ArbCom) is rightfully seen as a byzantine process. While stare decisis does not exist in the world of ArbCom, past cases are strongly persuasive. Arbitrators routinely reuse old principles and past cases are sometimes the measuring stick for how harsh a set of restrictions are. Newcomers to the arbitration process oftentimes have no idea where to start when perusing the last 16 years of ArbCom case. These ten cases or groups of cases
I break the history of ArbCom into three eras. Early ArbCom spans from 2004-2007. This area was punctuated by the committee attempting to find its feet. Cases are often about one person or two people in dispute instead of tacking a topic area. From 2008-2019 is Intermediate ArbCom. The committee expanded its power and created Discretionary sanctions. Contemporary ArbCom is everything post-Fram in 2019.

Palestine-Israel Cases

The Palestine-Israel Cases are 4 cases over 11 years that show the progression of how a difficult topic area is handled by ArbCom. Discretionary sanctions (DS) have become a cornerstone tool that ArbCom uses to curb disruption in a topic area. While it is not the first try to do this, Palestine-Israel articles is the case that birthed the modern DS regime and named it. Eight years later, DS was showing its age and was loosing effectiveness, especially when dealing with prolific sockmasters. Palestine-Israel articles 3 birthed extended confirmed protection to try to lessen the pressure on the topic area. To streamline all of the sanctions, the committee started fresh with Palestine-Israel articles 4.

Sockpuppet investigation block
[edit]Former members of ArbCom have access to the CheckUser and Oversight tools. In Sockpuppet investigation block (2015) the committee examined a the misuse of the tools for personal political ends. It is also a good example of how ADMINACCT is seen in the Late-Intermediate and Contemporary periods of ArbCom.
