Gareng is a character in Javanese mythology who frequently appears in wayang shadow plays. He is one of the punokawan who has a limp leg which is a symbol that we must be careful in acting. Gareng has the full name Nala Gareng, but is more familiarly called Gareng. Apart from a limp leg, Gareng also has other physical disabilities in the form of a broken hand which has a symbol of not taking other people's rights.[1]

Description

For his physical nature, Gareng has an imperfect body. His face was ugly and his eyes crossed. However, Gareng has a positive aura, where people around him always feel happy when he is close to him. Another name for Gareng is Pancalpamor which means rejecting all things that are worldly. There is also another name for Gareng besides Pancalpamor, namely Pegatwaja, which means he doesn't like to eat delicious, wasteful, and invites disease. He always eats simple food. While his popular name is Nala Gareng which means dry from prosperity, so he always does good to everyone.[1]</ref>

Origin

Gareng is better known as Semar's son and belongs to the Punokawan group. Gareng's real name is Bambang Sukskati who is the son of Resi Sukskadi from the Bluluktiba hermitage. For years, Bambang Sukskati meditated to gain the magic of the Candala hill, until he asked for permission from Resi Sukskadi to subdue the kings. On his way, he met Bambang Panyukilan, the son of Bagawan Salantara from Padepokan Kembangsore. They also fought because of their respective positions. His power is balanced. No one loses and no one wins. But they don't want to stop until they are both disabled. The fight was over after being separated by Semar or Sanghyang Ismaya. Sanghyang Ismaya or Semar also said that it made Bambang Sukskati and Bambang Panyukilan very ugly faces. Bambang Sukskati's body became disabled. His eyes were crossed, his nose was round, neckless, his legs were limp, his stomach was fat, and his hands were crooked. Until he was given the name Nala Gareng by Semar, and Bambang Panyukilan was given the name Petruk.[2]

Gareng is the eldest of Semar's three sons, Petruk and Bagong. Gareng has a polite and gentle nature when he acts in everything. Where this trait makes Gareng a wayang character who is valued in wisdom. Until finally he was trusted to be an advisor to the Pandavas.[3]

Use in wayang

In wayang stories, Gareng is always the mediator when his younger siblings fight. Even Gareng had awakened Petruk, when Petruk became king and forgot about his arrogance. Gareng if interpreted in Javanese means dry. Where means that his heart is dry from the temptations of worldly lust. That is, he always refuses with all the poisons of the world. His broken hand also gives the meaning that Gareng does not like to use his power to do things arbitrarily. It could be said that his hands were always protected from ugly traits.[2]</ref>

His limp legs give the meaning of being careful in acting. Because everything in the world has its good and bad effects. So we shouldn't be in a hurry to make decisions and move forward.[3]</ref>
