Toryuken (Tournament Series)

[edit]

Toryuken is an annual fighting game event based in Toronto Ontario. The tournament series started in 2012 with "Toryuken" at the Hyatt Regency Toronto.[1] These events are organized by TorontoTopTiers, which is a group dedicated to hosting fighting game events in and near the Toronto. Russell "NeoRussell" Ordana is the primary organizer for these events. These events feature fighting games from many different developers, and do not have a specific focus on any one type of fighting game.[2]

Tournament Structure

[edit]

Toryuken runs double elimination style brackets for its tournaments. Matches are typically played in best 2 of 3 games or best 3 of 5 game format. A player beat their opponent twice in a best 2 of 3 games format, and three times in a best 3 of 5 game format. Whether a match is played best 2 of 3 games or 3 of 5 games typically depends on which game is being played and whether the match in question is among the final or semi-final matches. High placing players receive cash prizes from a percentage of the tournament's entry fee. Past events have also sponsored cash prizes as well as part of a pot bonus.

Starting in 2017 Toryuken has been using smash.gg to handle tournament registration. Players select which games they wish to enter, and pay online to be signed up to play. The video game tournaments are open to the public, and so far have not included invitational or private events. Recent events have required spectators to also pay online to attend the event.
