The company
[edit]Web Structures is an international civil, structural and geotechnical engineering consultancy working from offices in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Shanghai. It is opening an office in London in May 2012. It has played a major role in researching and working on civil engineering projects in earthquake areas
The company’s diverse portfolio ranges from suspension bridges and luxury resort hotels to residential skyscrapers and complex commercial and industrial projects.
The practice has in-depth engineering knowledge of a wide range of disciplines and services including structural design, value engineering and prototype testing.
Web Structures’ specialist services include facade technology and curtain wall consultancy; seismic and wind engineering analysis and the assessment and upgrading of existing structures. It also offers expert witness advice to law firms involved in litigation.
Founded in 1996 in Singapore with a staff of two, Web Structures has grown to a 70-strong team of civil engineering experts. The company is led by group director Dr Hossein Rezai.
The Singapore office opened in 1996, Kuala Lumpur in [2004], Shanghai in [2006] and the London office will open in May 2012.
Dr Hossein Rezai
[edit]Dr Rezai was awarded a Ph.D. in 1985 for his work on reinforced and pre-stressed concrete structures.
He further pursued his research interest on a post-doctorate research programme on the assessment and upgrading of existing structures before joining the industry in January 1987.
In the past 23 years he has been involved with the design and development of a number of fairly high profile structures in the UK, South East Asia and abroad.
He has also been a visiting lecturer to the University of Westminster, London, where he has supervised a Ph.D. project at the school of Architecture and Engineering.
He currently assists on a part-time basis at the School of Architecture of the National University of Singapore. His research work has generated a number of technical papers in various national and international publications including the Structural Engineer (UK), the American Concrete Institute Journal and the Journal of the Singapore Institute of Architects.
Dr Rezai is an Associate Member of the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators, and has offered expert witness advice to various insurance companies, loss adjusters, and to law firms in the UK, Europe and in South East Asia.
Company history
[edit]Since its creation, Web Structures has worked on more than 400 projects in more than 24 countries.
Web Structures has been involved in the development of more than 52 residential and mixed-use skyscrapers around the world in the past 15 years.
They include the 50-storey Troika development in Kuala Lumpur (http://www.troika.com.my/) the 40-storey Queen’s Condominium in Singapore (http://www.redas.com/html/showcasing/queens/project.html) and 61-storey Northpoint in Thailand (http://www.northpointpattaya.com/).
The company has been commissioned to work on projects designed by leading international architects including Foster and Partners (http://www.fosterandpartners.com/Practice/Default.aspx), UN Studio (http://www.unstudio.com ), Kohn Pederson Fox (http://www.KPF.com) , Conran and Partners (http://www.conran.com) and Maki and Associates (http://www.maki-and-associates.co.jp/) .
The practice also played a special role in the Freedom Tower project in New York. Its awards include the IRBA Worldwide award for the Lincoln Modern in 2005, Institution of Structural Engineers Singapore Structural Awards 2010 for the Amphitheatre at Dhoby Ghaut Green, and the Design and Engineering Safety Excellence Award 2011 for the Tokio Marine Centre.
Web Structures was also part of the winning team in the three finalists for an international design competition to create Singapore’s National Art Gallery at two of the country’s most iconic buildings – the former Supreme Court and the City Hall.
More recently Web Structures has been on the winning team with Maki and Associates and DP Architects for the development of the new Mediacorp Headquarters in Singapore (http://www.mediacorp.sg) .
It was also commissioned to work on the tallest building ever built in Mauritius – helping design a 141m tall tower in cyclonic wind speeds of up to 77 metres per second.
