Home Office policing in Ashton-under-Lyne is provided by the Greater Manchester Police. The force's "(G) Division" have their divisional headquarters for policing Tameside in the town.[1][2] Public transport is co-ordinated by the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive. Statutory emergency fire and rescue service is provided by the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, which has one station in Ashton-under-Lyne, on Slate Lane.[3]

The Tameside General Hospital is a large NHS hospital on the outskirts of Ashton-under-Lyne,[4] administrated by Tameside Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.[5] The North West Ambulance Service provides emergency patient transport. Other forms of health care are provided for locally by several small clinics and surgeries.

Waste management is co-ordinated by the local authority via the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority.[6] Locally produced inert waste for disposal is sent to landfill at the Beal Valley.[7] Oldham's Distribution Network Operator for electricity is United Utilities;[8] there are no power stations in the town. United Utilities also manages Oldham's drinking and waste water;[8] water supplies being sourced from several local reservoirs, including Dovestones and Chew.[9] There is a water treatment works at Waterhead.[8]
