FTM A2 Ypsi
[edit]FTM A2 Ypsi, sometimes written as FTM A2/Ypsi is a social support group created for transgender identifying men and nonbinary people in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti, Michigan.[1] The group was
originally established as part of a student project at the local college Eastern Michigan University in 2015[2] and serves local transgender and nonbinary people through regular meetings, events, and sharing transgender-related news via their social media platforms.
History
[edit]FTM A2 Ypsi began as a collaboration between several trans male students at Eastern Michigan University who wanted to establish a support group for Female-to-Male (FTM) individuals within the Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti area.[1] The students were inspired by the organization FTM Detroit and decided to create a "chapter" of the organization for their local community,[1] though the organizations operate independently of one another. The organization was officially established in November 2015[1] and regular meetings were held discussing topics relating to transgender men's lives, such as hormone replacement therapy (HRT), using men's bathrooms, and relationships with friends and family.[2]
The group has appeared as a resource table at the Ypsi Pride festival for multiple years,[3][4] and participated in LGBTQ+ related events around the Southeast Michigan area.[5]
Operations
[edit]The group hosts two main types of recurring events: a support group for trans-masculine identified individuals and "T-Time with FTM A2 Ypsi," a social gathering for any transgender individual in the area.[2][6] They also host an annual pool party for transgender community members[2] and screen movies and documentaries regarding transgender life and experiences.[5]
The group received funding from the Trans Justice Funding Project in 2016[7] and 2019.[8] Additionally, they sell branded items such as t-shirt and pins to help cover the costs of events.[1]
