History

[edit]

The founder, Osamu Ukumori, founded "Tokyo ThreeBond" in 1955, in the ward of Kōtō, in Tokyo. During the first few years of the company's existence, the main focus was put on the manufacture of liquid gaskets for automotive engine, but the company soon shifted to the production of industrial adhesives. Now, the company offers a large range of products, including industrial chemical products such as adhesives, sealants, locking agents and anti-corrosion lubricants. It also manufactures heat-dissipating silicon adhesives.

The company was then split-up, with 15 subsidiaries and 27 exclusive distributors all over the world. Each of the sales outlets is managed independently as a joint stock company, even though the company owns most of the shares. The company has offices in North and Central America, South America, Europe, China, and Asia.

The research institute was built in Sagamihara City, in Kanagawa Prefecture, to bring together the research and development centres that had been previously dispersed in the Tokyo headquarters, Okayama and Saitama Prefectures. It became operational in June 2012. The institute is located on an area measuring 26 000 m2 on the site of ThreeBond Fine Chemicals, which is one of the main company's plants. It is now a hub of activity as a global strategic centre.

The site is also known for having sponsored the Kantō local weather forecast "Asu no Sora Moyo" (「あすの空もよう」) , which was broadcasted on weekends nights before 9pm, after TV Asahi's ANN News, for many years until early 2009.

Production system

[edit]

In total, there are two affiliated factories in Japan.

The adhesives and sealants are produced by ThreeBond Fine Chemicals Ltd. which has to plants : the Hashimoto plant and the Okayama plant.

The second company is ThreeBond Works Ltd., which fabricates adhesives for bolts, plugs and nuts, with a total of five sites : the Tatebayashi, Akishima, Inuyama, Kato and Kitakyushu plants.

Sports support activities

[edit]

Motor Sport

[edit]

In 2000, ThreeBond sponsored a team, formed around the racing driver Takeshi Tsuchiya (土屋武士), started competiting in the Japanese Formula 3 Championship with a system based on Nissan engines developed and designed by Tomei Engines with parts engineered and manufactures by the Umeda Tuning shop. ThreeBond chose the F3 category because "it is a category for the development of young people, which is run under common global rules and has therefore a good image."[1]

In 2011, the team, with Hironobu Yasuda (安田裕信) as the driver, won the Japanese Formula 3 Championship. They then began competing in 2012 in the British Formula 3 International Series[2] while taking a break from the Japanese Formula 3 Championship.

In 2017, ThreeBond will return to the Japanese Formula 3 Championship for the first time in 6 years parnering with "DRAGO CORSE" under the leadership of Ryu Michigami (道上龍) and will for the 2019 season enter a two-car team[3].

From 2012, ThreeBond became the main sponsor of KONDO Racing, which competes in the Super Taikyu ST-GT3 class with a Nissan GT-R. [4] The company has also been sponsoring the Modulo Dorago CORSE with the SUPER GT (GT300 Class) since 2018.

In October 2019, ThreeBond announced that activities in the field of engine supply to F3 would cease once the Japanese Formula 3 Championship would end too in the same year[5], but the group activities did not cease. Indeed, as a complete change of mind, it had been decided to pursue activities in this domain, as it was decided that the Albirex Racing Team, which competes in the Super Formula Lights, the successor to the Japanese Formula 3 Championship, would use ThreeBond (Tomei) engines in 2020.[6] The relationship with DRAGO CORSE continue, and in 2020 the company entered the Super Formula as the sponsor. [7]

In 2023, the name of ThreeBond racing has been revived, and a team managed by the company will compete in Super Formula under a new structure.[8]

In 1985, the team even ranked in the top 8 before taking a break from the club activities. At this period, they wore a vibrant orange uniform similar to the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters' one. One of the club member, Yasuhi Oki (沖泰司), joined the Nippon-Ham Fighters, and another one, Yoshiyuki Shimizu (清水義之), joined the Taiyo team. Many players were from Ehime, the birthplace of the founder.
