Patrick Anthony Mwewa Chikusu (born 12 January 1951) is a prominent Zambian clinical pharmacologist. He is known for the critical role he played in advocating for the use of traditional medicines along side conventional drugs.
Early life
[edit]He was born on 12th January 1951 in Kapila Village of Chibombo district in Central province of Zambia.
Education
[edit]He attended early education at Kasis Boys, Chalimbana and Munali Boys secondary school in Lusaka. He advanced to do A-level training at the University of Zambia before moving to Nigeria where he got his bachelors. He holds an MSc at Leeds University and PhD at the University of Strathclyde. He is the first Zambian to hold a doctorate degree in pharmacy.
Career
[edit]Chikusu is considered as the Godfather of pharmacy in Zambia. He pioneered in the opening of the first school of pharmacy at the University of Zambia and highly involved in training both pharmacy and medical students under the school of medicine. He was also part of the senate of the University of Zambia.
Chikusu held various key roles among them; chairman of Cancer Diseases Hospital at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH). He was once the managing director of Medical Stores where he improved access and distribution of drugs to all corners of Zambia.
He is remembered for the role he played as principal investigator in a clinical trail of using traditional herbal remedies to treat HIV in Zambia.
