Mari Espinoza (born December 19, 1997), is a University of Arizona graduate, mother of 3, Public Health Administrator, and proud business owner. As a minority (Mexican-American), Mari has come very far in her life and career considering the fact that she came from a small border-town in Arizona called Rio Rico. She is breathing proof that it does not matter where you come from, anything is possible no matter your background.
She started showing signs of success in her high school years. Mari was just a senior at Rio Rico High School when she became Vice President of Region 4 for Arizona HOSA: Future Health Professionals. In this position, she was able to connect and network with future health professionals from all around the world. Mari was able to travel to California, Florida, and even Washington D.C. where she was able to meet with congress man Raul Grijalva.
Mari graduated high school in May of 2016. She graduated in the top 10% of her class. Mari took advantage of a dual enrollment program offered at her high school through Pima JTED. With this program she was able to graduate high school as a Certified Nursing Assistant ready to hit the work force straight out of high school. However, Mari did not stop there. At the age of 18, she moved out of her parents house and over to Tucson Arizona on a full-ride scholarship to attend the University of Arizona. Mari headed off to the University of Arizona to initially study nursing. However, back in the day, the nursing program offered at the University of Arizona was extremely competitive and only accepted 54 students per semester. Mari was on a strict four year scholarship, so instead of taking chances, she switched her major to Public Health. It was hard to make the switch at first, because she was already accepted into the pre-nursing track as a freshman, but she Mari did not want to waste any time. She wanted to graduate on time with her class in May of 2020. Public Health seemed like something she could study because Mari knew she wanted to be involved in the Medical field. However, she had no intentions of going to Medical School.
What made this decision easier was her experience in working in the medical field as a certified nursing assistant. Mari was extremely passionate in working with people. Especially the elderly, which is what this profession focuses on. As a certified nursing assistant, Mari was able to work with all kinds of elderly people. She especially enjoyed working with elderly patients who suffered from dementia or alzhemier's disease As a certified nursing assistant, Mari was also able to see the ugly behind some nursing homes. Where some elderly patients get ignored, treated wrong, or abused. This is where her initiative in becoming a public health administrator came into play. She knew that she wanted to be working in nursing homes, but she also knew that she did not want to be a certified nursing assistant for the rest of her life. So she took it upon herself to do extensive research to find ways to make a difference in nursing homes, and switched her major to public health with an emphasis in administration.
Mari took summer classes, extra courses, and spent a lot of time studying but she did it. She graduated in May of 2020 from the University of Arizona and is now a proud alumni. Now 54 years later, Mari has administered more than 200 different nursing homes all over the United States. She has truly made a difference in all these nursing homes and she made sure that every voice was heard. Mari would go to nursing homes, talk to the residents and family members, find the problems, fix them, find new staff if needed to, all before she moved onto the next nursing home.
Mari's brother, Bruno Espinoza, studied Business Management back in 2017. Together, with their degrees, knowledge, and a heart to do something better for the community, Mari and her brother have opened a free nursing home in their hometown: Rio Rico Arizona. Mari regularly makes visits to this nursing home especially, to make sure that everything is up to date and running smoothly. Mari and her brother wanted something to leave behind to their community as a reminder to everyone who wishes to pursue any sort of a degree, that anything is truly possible if you set your mind and heart to it.
