The King of Kings is the debut solo album by Slayer guitarist/backing vocalist Kerry King. The album features many different styles of music and lacks the thrash metal elements of typical Slayer music and features many guest appearances by other musicians and close friends of King. It was released on March 22, 2011 and received negative reception and was commercially panned.

Development

[edit]

In 2010, Slayer bassist/vocalist Tom Araya was talking about the possibilities of a solo album. King thought by a solo album that he had meant an album "full of guitar solos", but when drummer Dave Lombardo explained it to him he got the idea to record and release his own solo album. King began writing songs with close friend Kip Winger, who was also plays bass guitar on the album. "At first the songs were like typical Slayer songs," said King, "but then I decided to turn them into my favorite genre of music: pop." The album was officially announced in February 2011 and was released in March. King has stated that most of the songs were written using a synthesizer from the late 1980s originally owned by fellow Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman
