Biography

[edit]

Brando Franco Windah was born in Manado, North Sulawesi on March 14, 1992, he is the second child of 4 siblings. Brando has two sisters named Florence and Caroline and a younger brother named Vincent.[6] When he was still in kindergarten, his family decided to move and settle in Jakarta. He spent his academic years in Jakarta. He went to an elementary school at Santo Vincentius Jakarta, then continued his junior high school in a private school at Marsudirini Chester Junior High School, and high school in St. Bellarminus Jakarta.[7]

When Brando was in a eleventh grade, he was frequently received bullyings from his classmates, eventually leading him to quit school and continued to work for his father's business as an internet cafe operator. He finally quit his career as an Internet cafe operator after his parents suggested him to continue his high school education to earn a school certificate, which he later applied for a homeschooling program run by Kak Seto,[8][7] an Indonesian Psychologist.

After graduating from high school, Brando decided and went to college. Where he studied International relations for a Bachelor's degree (Strata-1 in Indonesian academic standard) at London School of Public Relation (LSPR). But at the end of the semester, Brando had to quit his study at college due to financial problems his parents are facing. Although his parents were actually still able to financially support his education, Brando insisted that he had to quit because he needs to pay enough money for remedials which he can't afford.[6][8][7]

After quitting college, Brando began his life by working as a waiter in a small cafe in Jakarta, where he earned an income of around Rp. 900,000.00 per month. He only worked for a month and decided to resign due to his low earnings.[8] Later on, Brando got the opportunity to work at a restaurant in Kuningan, South Jakarta called Bluegrass. In this restaurant, Brando received training as a bartender which improved his communication skills. After working for three months at the Bluegrass restaurant, Brando got a job offer at a five-star hotel called The Westin Jakarta Hotel. This offer was received by Brando after hotel officials visited the restaurant where he worked, he accepted the offer and decided to resign from the restaurant where he worked.[8][6][7]

Later on, after resigning from the restaurant where Brando had previously worked, he did not immediately work at the five-star hotel he had just received an offer to work for, because the hotel was still in the inauguration process. While waiting for the hotel to open, Brando returned to looking for work and worked in a restaurant for at least three months.[8][7]

After waiting for the inauguration of the hotel for approximately three months, Brando began his job at the hotel, he earned a fairly large salary of around 2 digits (above Rp. 10,000,000.00). After approximately two and a half years working in a five-star hotel, Brando decided to resign again, this was done after he realized that he might not be promoted to a higher position because he did not see a career advancement in his job.[6][7] He met his girlfriend Sesilia Agnes while he was still working at the Hotel.[8]

Since then, Brando saw his future as a YouTuber, particularly in gaming category, a profession he always wanted. Around 2019 his income from YouTube reached the range of US$2.7 thousand–US$43.9 thousand per month.[9]

Personal life

[edit]

When Brando was in his freshman year at middle school, he experienced bullying by his schoolmates, this was due to his tall but skinny body posture. He also didn't tell his parents about him being bullied, according to his statement, he felt ashamed to admit that he was seen as weak by others. This bullying continued until high school so in the second grade of high school he decided to quit school.[7]

Career

[edit]

Brando's interest in playing video games began when he was little, the first game he played was a Nintendo NES game console, According to him, the game console that sticks in his memory the most is the PlayStation, one of his favorite video game is the RPG game series, Suikoden.[6][7]

His interest in playing games continued as Brando grew up as an adult, at that time he was still working as a waiter in a five-star hotel. After he decided to resign from the hotel, he wanted to have a profession as a Gaming YouTuber after he saw the success of other YouTubers such as MiawAug.[10] Seeing the potential that Brando had, he bought an Asus ROG laptop for Rp. 13 million for his new profession. At the beginning of his YouTube career, he was still hesitant to build his own YouTube channel, so he planned to invite his two brothers, Caroline and Vincent, to start their own channel. However, because his two siblings were still studying in school, Brando had to start his career alone, he created a channel called Windah Basudara. The name Windah Basudara is taken from the name Windah which is Brando's family name and Basudara which means 'brothers' in Manado language.[6][8][7]

At the beginning of his YouTuber career, Brando had to go through several obstacles, at that time his laptop was damaged which he had just bought for a month, so it had to be repaired for a week.[6] Desperate because he couldn't earn enough from his new profession and the problems he faced, Brando again tried to apply for a job at several hotels, but he failed because his applications were rejected.[8]

Later on, Brando told his mother about the problem he had faced, and his mother offered him a loan of money which Brando eventually used to buy a new PC. He revealed that once he had difficulties in getting viewers, so he had to spam links in chats to several social media platforms such as Facebook, Google+, and Line Square. Due to his massive success as a streamer, he can amass around 100k viewers during his live streams.[11] In April 2019, Windah Basudara can only receive a thousand subscribers, in June 2019, Windah Basudara's subscribers increased to 100,000 subscribers, he also had the opportunity to collaborate with MiawAug in the game Secret Neighbor, and was also invited to appear on stage at the 2019 YouTube FanFest event.[8][7]

On June 8, 2021, RRQ announced Windah Basudara as its brand ambassador,[3] RRQ is an esport team from Indonesia, this was announced through the Instagram RRQ account (@teamrrq).[12][13]
