Hi @User:Ploreky, I'm excited to start this journey with you as a adopter and mentor. I prefer to be called Missionedit and use she/her pronouns. A few ground rules and expectations to start us off with:

 • This page will be where I post lessons at your pace to the best of my ability. I am active a few times a week typically and will do my best to respond to your messages in a timely manner.
 • Some lessons will have tests, some will be merely reading and activities for you to complete. Questions are encouraged if you have them!
 • Please sign any comments on this page like you would on a talk page, with "~~~~"
 • Once we have covered all the basic topics successfully and I determine that you have passed, you will be considered graduated from the course!
 • If you go on Wikibreak for an extended period of time, please let me know.

Lesson 0: Intro Questions

[edit]
Intro Questions

And now, a few questions for you!

 1. Would you prefer to be called Ploreky or something else?
 2. What is your time zone?
 3. Talk to me about the sanctions / editing restrictions that you have gone through - I see that you've been under a 72 hour block before after receiving multiple warnings for disruptive editing and adding unsourced content before. What happened there, and do you feel that you learned from the situation?
 4. What types of editing do you like to do on Wikipedia? Do you edit specific article topics?
 5. What topics do you hope to cover in this mentorship? What do you hope to get out of it?
 6. As your mentor, what do you expect from me? Is there anything in particular you'd like to see me do?
 7. Would you be averse to using the Adopter and Adoptee userboxes?
 8. What picture would you like on this page to represent you (just for fun!)? It can be a picture of anything, and it doesn't have to be one that you've uploaded yourself. For some examples, see any of my other adoptee userpages in the page toolbar above. -- Missionedit (talkcontribs) 03:25, 12 October 2022 (UTC)
Hello! Thank you for Welcoming Me.
 1. Yes, Ploreky would be alright.
 2. My time zone is UST+8, Philippine time.
 3. I'm really sorry about that. To be honest, the first reason I joined wikipedia is to Promote the Apostolic Catholic Church. Yes, I've gone to a 72 hour block, But I am really thankful that I was not blocked indefinitely, because, as I learned more about wikipedia, accounts that are only for promotion is usually blocked indefinitely. But don't worry, now I have learned, now I know that those things are a big no no. Now I edit on wikipedia, not for promoting, but for helping and contributing. And because of those sanctions, I've matured greatly about what wikipedia really is. I'll be honest, I actually moderate/watch 3 articles about my Religion, I wish that it is okay. I am also planning to contribute more articles for wikipedia. One draft I made is User:Ploreky/sandbox#Maria Virginia Leonzon. Although I always forget about editing it/translating it. It is because I am always busy in other Wikipedia articles.
 4. Yes, I like topics about religion, it is because it is my personal forte.
 5. To be honest, the actual reason I want someone to adopt me is to teach me the basics of wikipedia, those that I still don't know. I also want to know the guides into making an acceptable article.
 6. Nothing in particular. I just actually want to learn
 7. No madame, no. I am alright with it. To be honest, I actually want it
 8. Yes, this would be okay https://www.123rf.com/photo_33341519_silhouette-of-bodybuilder-flexing-muscles.html?vti=mythydljwdolz97xe3-1-37 or this https://www.123rf.com/photo_16974270_a-handsome-muscular-man-with-hands-on-hips-smiling-bravely.html?vti=nrt71jjfqxp3fso2r8-1-155.
@User:Ploreky Thanks for answering the questions - it's great to get to know you and understand your background on Wikipedia a bit! Glad to hear about your journey in learning how to constructively contribute to Wikipedia after those sanctions, and I'm happy to be a part of furthering that journey. I think it's great have a topic that you are passionate about editing in and we can definitively delve into how to contribute to articles on Catholicism while still being mindfully of citing sources, conflict of interest, etc.
I've went ahead and placed the userboxes on both of our userpages. Since both of the pictures you referenced are not in the public domain, we can't include them here on Wikipedia. Could you take a look at some of these categories on Wikimedia Commons (which is a free repository of public domain images) and let me know if one of them suits your fancy?
I'll also go ahead and post your first lesson. We'll start simple and go from there!
P.S. Don't forget to sign anything you write on this page just like you would on a talk page! It will help us keep track of who writes what. -- Missionedit (talkcontribs) 03:59, 14 October 2022 (UTC)

Lesson 1: The Five Pillars of Wikipedia

[edit]
The Five Pillars of Wikipedia

These are the five "pillars", or fundamental principles, of Wikipedia. I've reworded them a little from the original to further explain/simplify.

First pillar Wikipedia is an encyclopedia.
Wikipedia incorporates various elements of reference materials such as encyclopedias, almanacs, and gazetteers. Wikipedia is not for advertising, propaganda, or social networking. It is also not a dictionary, newspaper, or collection of source documents; there are sister projects for this. The goal of Wikipedia is to form a comprehensive online encyclopedia - this means its goal is not to collect every detail of information that exists on the earth, and it must not contain unsourced original research.
Second pillar Wikipedia is written from a neutral point of view.
Wikipedia strives for articles that document and explain the major points of view, giving due weight with respect to their prominence in sources in an impartial tone. We present no such opinion as being "the truth" or "the right position" (in theory). Every allegation must be backed up by references, especially when concerning a controversial topic or a living person. Editors' personal experiences, interpretations, or opinions do not belong here.
Third pillar Wikipedia is free content that anyone can use, edit, and distribute.
Wikipedia is free for others to edit, use, modify, and distribute. No editor owns an article, so everything you write is free to be mercilessly edited and redistributed at will. Respect copyright laws, and never plagiarize from sources.
Fourth pillar Editors should treat each other with respect and civility.
Wikipedia has millions of editors who are bound to disagree on some topics. If a conflict arises, you should discuss your disagreement on the nearest talk page and remain level-headed without accusing. Just because another editor may be attacking you does not mean that you should to engage in similar behavior.
Fifth pillar Wikipedia has no firm rules.
Wikipedia has policies and guidelines, but their content and interpretation can evolve over time. Their principles and spirit matter more than their literal wording, and nothing is carved in stone. Sometimes improving Wikipedia means making an exception to the rule. Be bold in your edits (but not reckless) and don't worry about making a mistake, as you can always fix it.

@Ploreky: Any questions that you want to dive into initially? If not, we will move on to a lesson on reliable sources after this. -- Missionedit (talkcontribs) 04:06, 14 October 2022 (UTC)

Hello, I'm really sorry for my late reply, it was because was busy days. I do have a question, what does it mean from "plagiarize from sources"??? I always ask myself what does that mean. Yes this would be okay: Soldier_running_in_water.jpg, sorry I really just want my character look manly. I also have a question, what does it mean to sign? I can't understand it. I'm so sorry if I have so many questions. I am really sorry, this is just how I am.
@Ploreky: No problem at all! Image added. When we say "sign your posts", it means to add 4 tildes (which looks like this ~~~~) to the end of whatever messages that you write on Wikipedia talk pages. When you save the page, those tildes will turn into a link to your page and the date/time (see the end of this comment for an example). You can customize your signature with colors and fonts, which it appears on your talk page that you already have done. However, there are guidelines that we must follow when customizing what a signature looks like. Let me know if you need any further clarification. Perhaps a lesson on signatures would be best as the next one for you to complete? -- Missionedit (talkcontribs) 03:07, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
Yes, I would love to have the next lesson about signatures. Ploreky (talk) 06:20, 22 October 2022 (UTC)
@Ploreky: Great! I will do one on Wikiquette - which just includes general good manners and best practices in communication on Wikipedia, including signatures. I also moved the questions you answered at the beginning of this mentorship into a "Lesson 0" heading - it will help take up less space on the page that way! -- Missionedit (talkcontribs) 03:55, 25 October 2022 (UTC)

Lesson 2: Wikiquette

[edit]
Wikiquette

"Wikiquette" is a portmanteau of "Wikipedia" and "etiquette". It includes best practices for interacting and communicating with other editors here on Wikipedia. You may already be familiar with many of these practices - let's dive in! If any of the terms confuse you, you can click on the linked terms for more reading, or ask for clarification.

Assuming good faith

[edit]

Always assume that every member of the community you come across is trying to do the right thing. This one is pretty straightforward: the exception to this would be somebody who already has a bunch of vandalism warnings and who is making more malicious edits; they probably aren't acting in good faith. Apart from that, don't jump straight in to assume somebody is malicious.

Threading

[edit]

Threading is an organized way of replying to comments by adding an additional indentation, represented by a colon, :. When you're responding to something I write, you use one colon. When I then respond to you, you use two colons. When you then respond to me, you use three colons. When you want to respond to the original post, then you just go back to using one colon. Think of it this way: whatever you want to respond to, preface it with one more colon than what it had already. Talk pages should something like this - Have a read of WP:THREAD to see how this works.

How's the soup? --User:John
:It's great!! --User:Jane
::I made it myself! --User:John
Let's move the discussion to Talk:Soup. --User:Jane
:I tend to disagree. --User:George

How's the soup? --John

It's great!! --Jane
I made it myself! --John

Let's move the discussion to Talk:Soup. --Jane

I tend to disagree. --George

I noticed that you've been trying to do this, but you need to be aware of how many colons that the person before you placed. Eg. if I am using three colons, you need to use four, not just one! Let me know if we need to dive into this some more for you to understand.

Avoiding common mistakes

[edit]

Avoid these mistakes which have been made by many an editor:

 • Don't create autobiographical articles or articles about someone close to you, company articles, dictionary-type articles (we have Wiktionary for that), or redundant articles. For the last one, it's easy to figure out if you're creating something redundant; just type in the search term into the search box and see if what comes up covers your topic.
 • Whenever you delete content, be sure you give an detailed explanation as to why. Even if you revert vandalism, say that it's vandalism. Also, try not to delete valuable content just because it's poorly written or biased; instead, just rewrite it.
 • Don't self-reference (referencing the Wikipedia project in article space).
 • Don't use external links in places other than the external link section in an article.
 • Don't add your signature (~~~~) in any article, but always remember to use your signature on talk pages or other discussion pages such as this one.
 • Edit instead of criticize and be bold!
 • Remain level-headed in arguments (if you feel you're getting too heated, walk away and bring in a third party).
 • Don't get angry when you see bad articles or drastic edits to (or even deletion of) of your work. Again, assume good faith! :)

Signatures

[edit]

Here are the Wikiquette rules for signatures. Some people like to customize their signature using CSS and other code. There are a few no-nos, though.

 • Do not copy another editor's signature and try to use it as your own. Linking to someone else's user page on your signature is also a big mistake.
 • Don't make your signature too big. This can effect the way the surrounding text is displayed. Be sparing with your superscript and subscript, too. It can sometimes cause a similar problem. Don't make your signature too small, either, then we won't know who you are :) When you use different colors, make sure that color-blind people will still be able to read it without a problem.
 • Do not include images in your signature. It's unhelpful for a number of reasons, including server slowdown, distraction, comment displacement, and cluttering up the "File links" section every time you comment. You can use webdings or wingdings to get an image effect if you really want, because these are technically fonts and not images.
 • Keep your signatures short enough that they don't take up a whole line of text when you comment.
 • Make sure that your signature always links to at least your user page, talk page, and contributions page.
 • Don't include any external links at all or internal links that have no purpose to building the encyclopedia.
 • Assume good faith when approaching someone who has these problem signatures and be polite.

@User:Ploreky Any questions? You can also read further on this topic at WP:Wikiquette. We'll do a short exam after this one to make sure that you understand the concepts. Also, when you reply to this lesson, you will see a line of code on the page that says "REPLY ABOVE THIS LINE". Please reply above that line. If you don't, it will break the page formatting and I will have to fix it. Lol. Thank you. -- Missionedit (talkcontribs) 03:55, 25 October 2022 (UTC)

Hello, Good Day!, I have no more questions, I am now confident to proceed to the quiz PlorekyHave a problem? 06:21, 26 October 2022 (UTC)
@User:Ploreky Ok! Are you sure you figured out how to edit your signature alright? Let me know if you need any help - glad to see that you are signing now, that's great. Although it is not technically required, I would encourage you to also include in your signature a link to your user page as well. Currently, your signature only links to your talk page which meets the bare minimum standard (it's fine, but it is a show of good faith to other editors to include your user page link).
Also, I just thought I would ask - is there a specific reason that you have the talk page link in your signature phrased as "Have a problem?"? I total get wanting to be fun and playful with your signature, but that phrasing in English may come across as somewhat aggressive to other users (eg. "Do you have a problem with me??) might make it seem like you are internationally trying to cause trouble or instigate contention with your edits. Again, I'm assuming good faith here and want you to get along with other editors as much as possible! I would recommend taking a look through the first few sections of the page Wikipedia:Signatures before I post the exam, just to review the concepts. I'll work on it this week and get it posted soon. Thanks! -- Missionedit (talkcontribs) 20:44, 30 October 2022 (UTC)
@User:Ploreky I just saw that you've been warned about making some silly / unhelpful comments on AfD discussions - can you explain to me what's going on with that? I understand wanting to have some fun on Wikipedia (there is even a whole Wikiproject dedicated to that, called the WP:Department of Fun!), but there is a time and place for that. I'm here to be a resource for you, so if you have questions or need guidance related to AfD or creating new articles please let me know! It seems that you keep running headlong into trouble, lol. -- Missionedit (talkcontribs) 20:52, 30 October 2022 (UTC)
Hello, Mam. Missionedit. I'm so sorry my late reply. To be honest, I'm so ashamed of myself by the recent issues I've gotten in. I'm really so sorry about everything. I'm really so ashamed right now, I don't know how I will approach you. I'm sorry.
Yes, I agree with you, I will now change my signature because it is indeed quite aggresive.
I'm sorry for all the afd's, I just did that because I thought that I need to contribute more to Deletion talk pages in wikipedia. But, I didn't know that I was that unhelpful and useless in talks. I'm really sorry..... PlorekyHave a problem? 01:03, 9 November 2022 (UTC)
