The main railway transport enterprises of the region are concentrated at the station. Thanks to the station and the airport, the city of Mineralnye Vody is called the gateway of the Caucasian Mineral Waters.

History

[edit]

The station was opened in 1875 during the construction of the Vladikavkaz railway. Originally it was called Sultanovskaya. On April 30, 1875, the movement of trains began[1].

On May 17, 1894, regular train traffic opened on the Mineralnye Vody — Kislovodsk section[2].

In 1912, double-track traffic was arranged along the entire length of the Mineralovodsk branch of the railway.

In 1936, it was electrified with a direct current of 1.5 kV. In November 1936, the first electric train left the Mineralnye Vody station on a trial run. The power supply came from the Baksan hydroelectric power station, the first large hydroelectric power station in the North Caucasus.

On July 10, 1944, uninterrupted railway communication was restored between the Mineralovodsk junction station and the resort towns of Caucasian Mineral Waters[3].

In 1955, the modern station building was built. The building is a typical example of Stalinist architecture, it is crowned with a clock tower and surrounded by columns, and from the side of the tracks the colonnade extends forward from the central facade of the building, forming a semicircle. Between the building and the semicircle there is an open area on which there is a fountain with an eagle sculpture.

In 1963, the main course of the North Caucasus Railway was electrified with alternating current to the Nevinnomysskaya station. In order not to equip the Mineralnye Vody station with contact network switches, it was decided to convert the VL61 AC electric locomotives into two-system VL61D electric locomotives. Suburban passenger transportation to the stations of Kislovodsk (64 km) and Zheleznovodsk was carried out by DC electric trains, at the Mineralnye Vody station there were separate ways for the arrival and departure of EMU. In 1964, the voltage was increased to 3 kV.

In 1975, electrification on alternating current from Mineralnye Vody was continued to the Prokhladnaya station.

On September 17, 1978, at the Mineralnye Vody station of the North Caucasus Railway, the so-called "meeting of the four general secretaries", which later became somewhat famous, took place, four people who from 1964 to 1991 successively headed the Soviet Union, Leonid Brezhnev and Konstantin Chernenko, who were traveling by train to Baku, met with Yuri Andropov, who was here on vacation, and the head of the the region, the first secretary of the Stavropol Regional Committee of the CPSU Mikhail Gorbachev. Two months after this meeting M. S. Gorbachev was transferred to Moscow and elected secretary of the Central Committee of the CPSU.

On May 23, 2006, the Mineralnye Vody — Kislovodsk line was switched to alternating current with a voltage of 27.5 kV, the rolling stock was replaced with alternating current locomotives.
