"Be Sweet" is a song by American alternative pop band Japanese Breakfast. Written in 2019 by the band's lead vocalist Michelle Zauner and Jack Tatum of American indie rock band Wild Nothing, it has been labeled as a power pop song with elements of synth-pop and 1980s pop music. Lyrically, the song finds its narrator asking for her lover to reciprocate her sentiment for him. Zauner expressed the desire to write an upbeat song in contrast to the music of her first two albums which were noted for their themes of grief.[1]
Upon release, the song was praised by critics who noted its upbeat tone as a departure from the grief-centered lyrics of Japanese Breakfast's first two albums. It was the band's first song to chart, charting on the Alternative Airplay, Adult Alternative Airplay and Rock Airplay in the US. The track was released on March 2, 2021 alongside a self-directed music video depicting Zauner and American punk rock band Mannequin Pussy's Marisa Dabice searching for aliens. The video received positive reviews and was compared to American science-fiction television drama The X-Files.
