Kaidō East Expedition (海道東征; かいどうとうせい) refers to a cantata made from a poem by Hakushū Kitahara and a song by Nobutoki Kiyoshi. It was composed in 1940 during the 2600th imperial era as a song to celebrate the year. It was the greatest work in Hakushū's final years as well as being Nobutoki's most important work. It also became the title of a related writing by Hirō Sakata.

[edit]In 1940 at the time of the 2600th imperial year, a great number of composer both inside and outside of Japan created celebratory songs. Including domestic Japanese composers Kōsaku Yamada, Kunihiko Hashimoto, Shūkichi Mitsukuri, and Akira Ifukube; Foreign composers Richard Strauss, Jacques Ibert, and Benjamin Britten. 当時東京音楽学校の講師(元教授)であり、NHKの依頼により1937年に『海ゆかば』を作曲したことで広く知られた信時もまた日本文化中央聯盟より委嘱を受け、白秋と共に奉祝楽曲を作ることとなった。
