Jane Chemutai Goin is an award winning female Kenyan news journalist of Kalenjin origin in Nandi County.[1] Currently she is a television reporter at Citizen TV Kenya[2] . Her areas of interest include politics and current affairs. She is fluent in English, Kiswahili and Kalenjin.[3]

Life and Career

Chemutai Goin has been in the media industry for the last eight years.[4] She exhibits key elements of storytelling which include reporting, producing feature stories and written communication for research.[5]

She started as an intern at Kenya Television Network (KTN) and was able to advance and equip herself with the necessary skills thus shaping her career as she took political reporting as her niche. [6][7]

Chemutai then joined Capital FM as a reporter.[8] After a while, she landed a job at Media Max to work as a political reporter on K24 TV.[9]

Since Kenya recorded its first Corona Virus case, Chemutai has been vocal in doing stories on COVID-19 and the impact it has created in the country. On April 21,2020 Chemutai did a news story in Kiswahili informing the public that the police was on a manhunt in arresting people who had escaped from quarantine at the Kenya Medical Training Institute in Nairobi. This story also featured how Kenyans had ignored laws set in place by the government to curb the spread of Corona virus.[10]

On May 13,2020 she did a story on how the Kenyan government established a mobile laboratory testing facility in order to address the Namanga Border post after it was identified as a high risk area in the transmission of the corona virus.[11][12]

On May 10,2020 Chemutai did another story to create awareness on the government's collaboration with other East African states in fighting COVID -19 and flattening the curve by reducing the number of transmissions.[13]

Other reports
During the 2017 Kenyan general elections, Chemutai reported on the events that occurred in different regions across the country.[14][15] Other than being a news reporter on Citizen television, Chemutai is also a writer in the station's website (Citizen Digital). Her contributions to the website are based on political and health news. Some of the political news she's written include:

  • On November 28,2019 she wrote about Kenya's Independent and Electoral Boundaries Commission Chair, Wafula Chebukati maintained that the current team would still perform oversight on the 2022 General Elections [16]
  • Chemutai also writes about Kenyan Parliamentary bills and approvals. On October 10,2019 she documented how Kenyan members of parliament approved a request from the National Treasury to raise the public debt ceiling from Ksh.6 trillion to Ksh.9 trillion [17]

  1. Chemutai gives an account of how seven Kenyans had come in contact with a patient who had tested positive in the Corona virus disease. [18]
  2. In another article, she writes about how medical insurance service providers would not be able to compensate their clients in the event that the clients were infected with COVID 19.[19]

Awards

Presidential Awards On 1st of June 2020 (Madaraka Day), Chemutai was among the journalists given a state commendation in helping the country and creating awareness regarding the corona virus disease. The award, known as "Uzalendo Award" was given by President Uhuru Kenyatta while addressing the nation. He acknowledged Chemutai among the ten journalists who had spearheaded and exhibited great efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic.[20]
