Option 1
[edit]- Article title
- Microbiomes of the built environment
- Article Evaluation
- Much of the information in the article is presented through bullet point form. While this is good for presenting many facts (which the article effectively does), it does not provide much detail.
- This article has a C rating on Wikipedia, and averages 5 page views a day, with 112 page views in the past 3 weeks.
- I believe the lead could use some more detail so that the reader has a better understanding of what this topic is and why this scientific discipline is relevant.
- The article seems to have a good basic framework, but needs more detail in several sections. As the reader, I would like to learn more about the impact of microbes in man-made environments on human health, as well as different microbes found in different built environments. The article provides information on many relevant aspects of the topic, however, it seems to be mainly surface-level information, and could be better developed.
- The article is written in a neutral way, with an informative tone.
- I believe the article could use some changes to the way it is organized. Perhaps new subheadings could be created as more details are added.
- I notice many proper citations throughout the article, and they all seem to be from reputable sources such as peer-reviewed journals. There are many different resources cited. If I were to edit this article, I would read through these resources in more detail to find relevant information that could be contributed to this article.
- The article has no images. Perhaps microscopy images of some of the more prevalent microbes in human environments or of different types of built environments would be beneficial to the reader's understanding.
- This topic relates to "Life on Land" as the microbial populations throughout urbanized areas can tell us about the molecular biodiversity found throughout our ecosystems, while maintaining a focus on living things in urban environments.
Option 2
[edit]- Article title
- Gateway National Recreation Area
- Article Evaluation
-
- This article is relevant to the "Life on Land" topic as this is a local recreation area in the middle of an urban environment (NYC). It is interesting to read about the opportunities offered in this area, the wildlife, and how this area differs from the city at large, as well as how relates to it.
- This article has a C rating on Wikipedia. It averages 40 page views a day, with 833 total page views in the past 3 weeks.
- The lead is concise and effective, as it tells the reader about the purpose of these parks (protection and preservation of NYC nature and wildlife), the opportunities that are offered here, and its relation to the city (ownership and maintenance).
- The article is well-written with a neutral tone and is well-organized. Some sections are lacking detail, and more sources can be added as certain details and park units are elaborated upon. One of the main things this article could benefit from seems to be the addition of detail.
- All sources are relevant, and the content seems to be up-to-date. I would also look for additional sources in order to provide more relevant and updated information on this area.
- If I were to edit this article, I would like to add more information to the Staten Island Unit and to the Sandy Hook unit, as both of these units have very little information on them, compared to the Jamaica Bay Unit. I would also like to add some images of both of these units if possible. It would also be interesting if there was more information on the local wildlife of the recreation areas. This would give the readers an overall better understanding of the urban wildlife.
Option 3
[edit]- Article title
- Urban wildlife
- Article Evaluation
-
- This is one of the most well-developed and detailed articles out of the ones I am evaluating. The article is written neutrally, is detailed, and there are many resources provided.
- This article has a C rating on Wikipedia, and gets an average of 83 daily views. There are 1,750 page views total in the past 3 weeks.
- The lead introduces the topic effectively and the article discusses urban species' evolution, interactions with humans and the environment, and how urban wildlife differs and is the same throughout various regions on Earth.
- It seems that some claims in the article could use more citations.
- The article is well-written and easy to read. There are also relevant images throughout the article which helps the reader have a better idea of the different species that populate cities throughout the globe.
- If I were to edit this article, I would like to delve deeper into the topic of selective pressures exerted on animal species living in urban environments. I did a project on the selective pressures of light pollution on the eyes of birds living in cities. I believe information on this could be an interesting and relevant contribution to this article.
- I would also like to add more detail on the animal species living in different environments on Earth in order to illustrate how urban environments and life compares throughout different biomes.
- This topic relates to "Life on Land" as I notice there are some species that are ubiquitous throughout the world's cities, regardless of biome and environment (such as mice and pigeons). Many cities throughout the world also have local wildlife unique to their ecosystems(such as monkeys, zebras, and coyotes). The animals living in cities throughout the world can tell us more about specific biomes they are from and how life on land can differ throughout various cities on Earth as a result.
