"I Wouldn't Treat A Dog (The Way You Treated Me)" is a song by the American blues singer Bobby Bland, written by the Michael Price and Dan Walsh, and first released as the second track on the album, Dreamer, in 1974.
Music critic Douglas Wolk describes the song as one "in which [Bland] managed to be both panoramic and startlingly intimate".[1]
Background
[edit]Bland's former label, Duke had been sold to ABC-Dunhill in 1971 and his new label paired him with producer Steve Barri who "moved Bland back to a more bluesy vocal style".[2] Michael Omartian was brought in to arrange and conduct the orchestra of session musicians on Bland's first album on the Dunhill label. Barri, Omartian, and largely the same group of session musicians returned to record the next LP entitled Dreamer. Songwriting duo Walsh and Price, who were writers for the label and had previously written for The Grass Roots, wrote "I Wouldn't Treat A Dog (The Way You Treated Me)" and four other tracks for the album.[3]

[edit]- Rhythm Heritage, for whom Barri was producer and Omartian a keyboardist, covered the song. It was used as a B-Side to their number 1 single "Theme from S.W.A.T." in October 1975
