Star NFL linebacker Junior Seau[1] was just 43 years old when he took his own life last May. He suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a neurodegenerative brain disease that can follow multiple hits to the head[2]

In 2017 season on the road in Cincinnati, former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier[3] suffered a spinal contusion on Monday Night Football that left him temporarily paralyzed and ended his career[4]
