Cybertwee

Cybertwee is an arts collective and microgenre incorporating elements of technology, cyberpunk, cuteness, sweetness, and femininity.

Formation

[edit]

Cybertwee was orginally founded as an arts collective by artists Gabriella Hileman, Violet Forest, and Dena Winter (formerly May Waver) in October of 2014. Inspired by VNS Martix, the trio met to draft their own manifesto. The manifesto draws on Ray Kurzweil's concept of the Singularity, as well as cyberfeminism and cybrogs. It has been celebrated for xxx, and criticized for xxx.

After releasing the manifesto and an accompanying video, they created a private Facebook group to explore the concept with others. The group has 3,000 members as of 2019.

Notable Projects

[edit]

The group received notoriety for a project called Dark Web Bake Sale in which they began selling glitter-covered edible cookies on the dark web. Initially launched as a kickstarter, backers received instruction on how to purchase bitcoin and use pgp encryption to purchase the cookies on a Tor webpage. The cookies were then sent to them in the mail.

A Dark Web Handbook was published by Cybertwee following the bake sale.

In 2016, Violet Forest began working on a virtual reality gallery for Vive and iOS. Cybertwee launched a global call for digital work to curate works for the virtual space. In 2017, the group released the virtual gallery as the Cybertwee HQ in the app store and on itch.io
