Dori Csengeri is a jewelry designer born in Tel Aviv. She is the founder and head designer of Dori Csengeri, an international jewelry company.
Education and Career
[edit]Dori Csengeri studied textile design at the prestigious Shenkar College of Engineering and Design in Tel Aviv. She continued on to England where she specialized in fabric design at Tootal Fabrics in Manchester, and afterwards to Cyril Kowalewsky’s studio in Paris.[1] Csengeri worked as a freelance textile designer in the years to follow. While working with textiles, Csengeri became bothered by the fact that her designs were so dispursed and that the end uses of her creations were unknown to her. It was at this point that Csengeri decided to apply her knowledge to jewellery design. She extended her studies to include Art History which she studied at the University of Zurich, and painting at the Academie de Port-Royale in Paris.
The Company
[edit]It was at the Academie de Port-Royale that the soutache cords came to Csengeri's attention and became the key material used in her jewelry designs.[2] Her creations are original handmade pieces composed primarily of the silky cotton cords with other materials such as fine stones, crystals, beads, shells, feathers, wood, or metal. Being a textile designer by trade, Csengeri works in a variation of modern passementerie and embroidery, however, the technique used today is her original variation of the crafts.[3] She identified the ability to teach her designs to others and through that a company was built. Starting off small, Csengeri created a company with both business and humanitarian purpose as she employed new immigrants seeking absorption with great working conditions.[4] Today, Csengeri's jewellery is intricately hand sewn at her Tel Aviv atelier by experienced craftswomen according to traditional needlework techniques still tought by the artist herself. Csengeri takes pride in the continuation of the craft tradition as she notes:
"With the years I appreciate that my work contributes to the conservation of a traditional, feminine craft, the roots of which are planted in the origins of human culture. There is an inherent beauty in the fact that we do everything by hand, in a company of women."[5]
Dori Csengeri, the company, was established in 1992. Her recognition grew over the next ten years and by 2004 she was selling worldwide in cities including Paris, Milan, Barcelona, London, New York, Tokyo, and Berlin.[6] She now sells in over 100 stores in the US alone.
Csengeri is an award winning designer. She was presented with the prominent Eclat de Mode award, as decided by a jury, for 'most exceptional jewelry' in Paris in 2004, for her original creation "An Indian in Paris".[7][8][9]
Csengeri has collaborated with Atelia Swarovski and designed two groups for the Spring-Summer 2009 collection.[10] She has also created jewellery for Swarovski ELEMENTS™ trend inspirations.[11] Csengeri's designs have been published on the pages of multiple magazines including Vogue, W Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Glamour, and Marie Claire.[12]
