The Incredible Sandwich

[edit]

The Incredible Sandwich is a rock music band based out of Athens, Georgia. The four-piece band formed in the fall of 2007.[1] The band's style favorably reflects that of more popular jam bands such as Widespread Panic and String Cheese Incident. Guitarist Matt McKinney told The Niner Online: “It’s a psychedelic, spacey, progressive rock jam sound.”[2] The band has won multiple awards and appeared in popular music charts related to their particular genre.[3][4]

Background

[edit]

The Incredible Sandwich started out as a three-piece band consisting of guitarist/vocalist Matt McKinney, bassist Kevin Juneau, drummer/vocalist Rackley Davis, before adding the Maryland native Damian Kapcala on keyboards.[5][6] According to the Athens Banner-Herald, McKinney says "The addition several months ago of Kapcala helped the group move into a different realm."[7] Like many other artists with the improvisational rock style, the band doesn't exactly like being labeled as a 'jam band' because it is easy to be stereotyped or lumped in with more famous bands of the genre, as McKinney tells the Red and Black,"'When somebody says ‘Oh, you’re a jam band,’ they’re pretty much just saying ‘Oh, you sound like Phish,’ or ‘Oh, you sound like Grateful Dead.’ And that is completely unfounded.'" The band believes the most important aspect of their performances is the music itself, and their shows reflect this belief. The band doesn't dress in fancy clothes or do anything to distract the audience from the music itself.[8]

Accomplishments and Accolades

[edit]

The Incredible Sandwich released its first EP in May 2009 under the Mule Train Records label. In June of the same year, the group won the 2009 Flagpole Athens Music Award for "Upstart of the Year". In the Fall of 2010 The Incredible Sandwich plans to release its first full length album which was recorded at John Keane (record producer) Studios in Athens and will also be released under Mule Train Records.[9] On Thursday, June 24, 2010, The Incredible Sandwich won the Flagpole Music Award for Best Jam Band in Athens, beating out competition such as Mama's Love and Perpetual Groove. The Incredible Sandwich also won a voting contest in 2010, voted by the public and fans, to play at the Wakarusa Music Festival at Mulberry Moutain in Ozark, Arkansas.[10] The festival features some of the best performing artists of the time, including another Athens, GA based band Widespread Panic, STS9, Disco Biscuits, and Bassnectar among others.[11] The band has also climbed as high as 11 on the Relix/Jambands.com charts and spent 21 consecutive weeks on the Homegrown Music Network's radio charts.[12]
