Vontae Diggs (born November 7, 1995) is an American football linebacker for the New Orleans Breakers of the United States Football League (USFL). He tried out with the Washington Redskins after graduating from the University of Connecticut.

Early Life

Born in Las Vegas, Vontae Diggs moved to Chicago with his mom, Robin, and older brother Jermal. Diggs spent most of his childhood living on Chicago's south side and in the northwest suburban town of Downers Grove. Diggs went to Downers Grove North High School. Diggs did not have stable housing for most of his upbringing, mostly living out of hotels, cars, and sleeping in parks before being taken in by friends as a sophomore.[1] While in high school, Diggs wrestled, ran track and field, and was a leader for the Downers Grove North Trojans football team. Diggs made the 2013 DuPage county all-area football team[2] alongside current NFL offensive lineman Brian Allen and received four Division-I scholarships. Diggs committed to the University of Toledo before rescinding that commitment and committing to Ball State University. Diggs later visited the University of Connecticut[3] as a senior and signed with the team[4] in February 2014.

College Career

Vontae Diggs played all 48 games for the UConn Huskies in his collegiate career. Diggs tallied 77 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss[5] in his senior season.

Professional Career

Diggs has played in five different football leagues, including the AAF and Arena Football League. After going undrafted in 2018, Vontae Diggs tried out for the Washington Redskins before being released in the final cuts of the 53 man roster. Most notably, Diggs spent two years with the Edmonton Elks in the Canadian Football League where he won the team's "Most Outstanding Rookie" award in 2019. He was released by the Eskimos in 2020 and signed with the Toronto Argonauts. In October 2021, he was released by the Argonauts. Diggs currently plays linebacker for the New Orleans Breakers of the United States Football League.
