Evaluate an article
Complete your article evaluation below. Here are the key aspects to consider: Lead sectionA good lead section defines the topic and provides a concise overview. A reader who just wants to identify the topic can read the first sentence. A reader who wants a very brief overview of the most important things about it can read the first paragraph. A reader who wants a quick overview can read the whole lead section.
ContentA good Wikipedia article should cover all the important aspects of a topic, without putting too much weight on one part while neglecting another.
Tone and BalanceWikipedia articles should be written from a neutral point of view; if there are substantial differences of interpretation or controversies among published, reliable sources, those views should be described as fairly as possible.
Sources and ReferencesA Wikipedia article should be based on the best sources available for the topic at hand. When possible, this means academic and peer-reviewed publications or scholarly books.
Organization and writing qualityThe writing should be clear and professional, the content should be organized sensibly into sections.
Images and Media
Talk page discussionThe article's talk page — and any discussions among other Wikipedia editors that have been taking place there — can be a useful window into the state of an article, and might help you focus on important aspects that you didn't think of.
Overall impressions
Examples of good feedbackA good article evaluation can take a number of forms. The most essential things are to clearly identify the biggest shortcomings, and provide specific guidance on how the article can be improved. |

[edit]2009 Sierra Leone ferry accident
Why you have chosen this article to evaluate?
[edit]My mother is from Sierra Leone. She was born and raised there but immigrated to the United States in the 80s. She is very proud of her country and heritage, but I still feel like I do not know much about Sierra Leone as a whole. This article caught my eye because I had never heard of this incident before, but I wonder if any members of my family were involved.
Evaluate the article
[edit]Lead Section
- I believe the article did a good job of giving a brief explanation regarding the accident. It included how many people died, the people labeled as missing, as well as those who were rescued. However because the actual number of people aboard was never reported it is hard to say if those numbers are completely correct.
Content
- At first the information was factual. But, a large portion of the article is anecdotal. It seems like not a lot of information was released or found when writing so the words of those rescued or family members of victims had to be used as "fact".
Tone and Balance
- For the most part I believe the article has a very neutral stance. However there were a lot of quotes from survivors that placed blame on the ship captain or law enforcement for their search methods. There were not any in defense of those two.
Sources and References
- All of the links for the cited sources worked except for the ones that go to IOL. Unfortunately, about half of the citations come from this IOL article that I was unable to open.
- The sources all came from trusted news sites from around the globe. They included China, the U.S., Ireland, the U.K., South Africa, etc.
- The sources are not up to date as they were written when the accident first occurred 14 years ago.
Organization and Writing Quality
- The article is broken down into different sections that focus on situations involving the accident.
- I believe it was written well and was concise.
Images and Media
- There were no images or media included. The lead section just shows a map of where Sierra Leone in located in Africa.
Talk Page
- This article is apart of Wiki Projects and has been labeled C-class or low-importance.
