Sante Scaldaferri (Salvador, 1928 - 15 May 2016[1]) was a visual artist, actor, and set designer from Brazil[2].
Biography
[edit]Sante was born in the capital of Bahia and participated in cultural movements in the 1940s, such as editing the magazine titled "MAPA". However, his artistic training only began in the 1950s, graduating from the School of Fine Arts of the Federal University of Bahia in 1957.[3] He was an apprentice of Mário Cravo Júnior.[4] In the same year, he joined the UFBA School of Theater, studying set design with Gianni Ratto.[5]
In the 1950s, he participated in the pioneering initiatives of Gláuber Rocha, collaborating with Cinema Novo as a set designer and actor.[3]
During the establishment of the Museum of Modern Art of Bahia, in the Solar do Unhão, he was an assistant to architect Lina Bo Bardi (from 1958 to 1964), also teaching artistic education to children at this institution.[5]
In the 1970s, the artist played a crucial role in teaching and coordinating social programs. In an old mansion in the Pelourinho, long before it became a tourism center, he led an initiative sponsored by SESI, offering courses to underprivileged youth and children with artistic talent, gathering young talents and dedicated teachers to teach artisan techniques.[5] This experience was also extended to the community of Alagados, at the Simões Filho School.[6]
Positions and Honors
[edit]Scaldaferri served as a jury member for the "I MAM-Bahia Salon of Plastic Arts" (1994); the "Regional Salon of Itaparica" (1997); and the "VIII MAM-Bahia Salon of Plastic Arts" (2001).[7]
He was a member of the Bahia State Council of Culture and participated in a cultural incentive program.[6]
In a session of the Chamber of Deputies on January 19, 1994, he was honored by then-deputy Haroldo Lima. Titled "Land of artists, land of Sante", the speech praised the artist from Bahia, one of the most prominent in his field in the state: "Sante is a refined and original artist in his technique. But he is a people's artist. His art delights us with the strong beauty of simplicity and truth, starting with the subjects of his paintings, the everyday life, joys, sorrows, pride, arrogance, hope, and faith that walk along with humanity".[8] In his book Sem Meias Palavras, Lima also emphasizes that "Sante Scaldaferri's paintings feature figures that are both grotesque and plastically beautiful, and they also lyrically express the harsh and jocular view that simple people have of the dominant elites".[8]
He died at the age of eighty-eight from kidney failure and was buried the day after his death at the Cemitério do Campo Santo in Salvador.[9]
Major Painting Exhibitions
[edit]In 1977, the first catalog of his work was published, titled "A Cultura Popular na Arte de Sante Scaldaferri". To celebrate thirty years of his painting career in 1988, another catalog was made with all his works.[3]
