Green Springs Elementary School (often shortened to Green Springs Elementary) is a public elementary school in Olathe, Kansas, United States. Green Springs Elementary is part of the school district Olathe School District.

History

[edit]

The first previous two elementary school locations in the area were constructed in 1866 and 1877. During at least the last nineteenth and possibly into the twentieth century, students would attend morning classes at the 1866 school and afternoon classes at the 1877 school, until eventually the 1866 school was defunct. The school built in 1877 is the building of the current Green Springs Elementary School. In 1931 until 1933, during the Great Depression, the school was temporarily shut down due to lack of funding capability. In 1950, the school officially joined the unified school district.[3]

Incidents

[edit]

In the early morning hours of February 3, 2011, a large structure fire occurred at Green Springs Elementary School. The Olathe police and firemen arrived after being contacted by a school janitor.[4] The police and firemen successfully extinguished the fire, but after an investigation, it appeared that there was also a burglary before authorities arrived, and that the fire was intentionally ignited.[4] An investigation was carried out, and investigators identified three juvenile suspects.[5] The fire severely damaged five classrooms in the building.[4][6]

Students were able to return to the school on February 8, because of the fire[4] and because of snow days. Faculty at the school lost a great amount of necessary items, which were eventually replaced by school district officials. Classrooms were temporarily moved pending renovation, and many students were told to go to Briarwood Elementary School during that interval.[7]
