Southern Guild

Southern Guild is an art gallery located at the Victoria & Albert Waterfront in Cape Town, South Africa and in Melrose Hill, Los Angeles, United States of America.

History

The gallery was founded in 2008 by Trevyn and Julian McGowan. The first exhibition was an annual collection of locally designed and produced limited-edition furniture launched at the 2009 Joburg Art Fair. Southern Guild opened its first permanent gallery space in Woodstock, Cape Town in 2014, and moved to its current location at the Victoria & Albert Waterfront in 2017. It opened its first gallery in the USA on 22 February 2024, situated in the Melrose Hill neighbourhood of East Hollywood in Los Angeles.

The gallery has hosted more than 50 exhibitions, including ‘iThongo’ (Ancestral Dreamscape) by Andile Dyalvane in 2021, a solo exhibition by Zanele Muholi in 2023, 'uBuhle boKhokho' by Zizipho Poswa in 2022, 'Spring Awakening' in 2022 and 'Tainted' by Justine Mahoney in 2017.

Southern Guild participated in Design Miami for the first time in 2011 and at Christie’s London’s annual design auction in 2015. ​​It represented South Africa at the 2016 London Design Biennial with an exhibition of animal-shaped hanging seating pods by artist Porky Hefer at Somerset House, London. The gallery has participated in international art fairs including Design Miami, Design Miami/Art Basel, Expo Chicago, The Armory Show, The Salon, PAD London, Design Days Dubai, and Collective in New York.

International art projects include Porky Hefer’s ‘Endangered’ in collaboration with Lisa Schiff of SFA Advisory, presented at Design Miami/ Basel to benefit the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation; Hefer’s ‘Plastocene - Marine Mutants from a Disposable World’ presented at the NGV Triennial 2020, National Gallery of Victoria, exhibition and documentary in collaboration with Friedman Benda gallery in New York. Southern Guild also worked closely with Red Carnation Hotels to curate the a private collection of African design and art for Xigera Safari Lodge in Botswana’s Okavango Delta.
