History Brainchild of Meaningful Design Labs, Jaggery Bags was founded by Usha Malik (ex Professor Miranda House Delhi University) Gautam Malik (ex Design Head of Jabong) and Bhawna Malik (Architect teacher in Ansal university) in the year 2015. Gautam designed the company logo in 2013 with which he branded the eco-friendly bag venture in 2015. Architects turned entrepreneurs, they observed that materials such as car seatbelts, army tents, inner tyre tubes, kid bounices etc are easily discarded in landfills or being burnt, hence harming the environment; which led them to think and start designing bags. Initially they started to design and manufacture in their house, when they opened their own office in Gurgaon on 10th October 2016. The initial designs used to be made by Gautam himself. Once the bags were made in bulk, the company made their own website and Facebook page and started to put up stalls in Dastkar Design Fairs to promote their brand. Slowly, the company grew and has one of it’s offices in Australia.

Marketing Jaggery is founded on the principles of sustainability, fair trade and global citizenry. Their products are handcrafted with respect for the environment and the people who make them. Their goal is to inspire thoughtfulness around people and this can be seen in the sustainability initiatives they support. One of them is that they deal with planting a tree for every bag that they sell and the other revolves around donating a percentage of the sales made towards empowering underprivileged women with relevant skills for a sustainable livelihood.

Materials used All the materials used in Jaggery Bags is repurposed, otherwise also known as upcycled materials. These materials include army truck tarpaulin which is super durable, kid bouncies, parachute materials, inner tyre tubes, automobile seatbelts, unused discarded fabrics (Kantha and Pattu), fire hose and car upholstery. Unfortunately, most of these materials are discarded easily and are no longer needed. Not only it harms the environment, it just fills the landfills more. That’s where Jaggery Bags steps in and uses these materials. 75 of their products are made from reclaimed, repurposed or upcycled materials. The company offers a wide range of products all made with the health of our planet in mind, hence their major goal is to play an integral part in developing solutions that counter the world’s pollution problems.

Products Jaggery Bags’ best seller bags includes the Pilot’s Everyday Bag (15 inches) and Tote Bags which has old advertisements printed on them. Depending on the size of the bag, each bag can take up to 6 hours to 1 day to make. Each design of the bags is simple and is only available through their official website and exhibitions. Most of the bags have automobile seatbelts as their handles and army truck tarpaulin as it’s durable and has a lifetime warranty. Almost all the bags of the brand has their famous owl logo and made with love tag. All the bags are made in their own manufacturing unit and markets their products mainly through social media to control it’s pricing and quality. Other bags which are quite popular includes Ipad Sleeves, Coin Purses, Co-Founders Bag, Backpacks, Cross Body Bags, Doer’s Bag, Passport Cases, Mobile Pouches, Wallets and Travel Kit Bags.

Collaborations 1. Strategic partnership with The Learn and Uplift Foundation, a registered Canadian NGO. 2. Jaggery Bags is India's first bag manufacturing brand that is Fair Trade. 3. Ongoing activities such as Craftmark application, Artisan Card application (pehchan card for artisans). 4. Ongoing internship programs with Pearl Academy and NIFT already in place and one with NID in the pipeline. 5.
