Chennai Super Kings (often abbreviated as "CSK") is a franchise cricket team based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu that plays in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The team was founded in 2008 and is currently captained by Mahendra Singh Dhoni and coached by Stephen Fleming, a former New Zealand cricketer.[1][2] The brand value of Chennai Super Kings was estimated to be US$75.13 million, making them the most valuable franchise in the IPL.[3] The team has reached finals of IPL four times and semi-finals once, while they have won the championship twice.[4][5][6][7][8]
Chennai Super Kings played their first match in the first season of IPL as the opening match of the series. In the season, they reached the final after topping the points table, and lost against Rajasthan Royals.[9] While in the second edition, the team reached the semi-final where they lost it to Royal Challengers Bangalore.[10] The team became the champions of the IPL for the first time in the third season where they reached the final and won the match by defeating Mumbai Indians by 22 runs.[11] In 2011 also, the team became champions of the fourth edition of IPL after winning the final against Royal Challengers Bangalore.[12] They reached the final of IPL for the fourth and third consecutive time in the fifth edition. However, they lost the match against Kolkata Knight Riders, who won it by five wickets and with two balls remaining.[13]
Suresh Raina is the CSK's leading run scorer, with 2525 runs. He is followed by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who has 1919 runs, 606 less than Raina.[14] Dwayne Bravo has the highest batting average, 47.60%. Bravo and Michael Hussey are the only two people to get over a 40% batting average. Hussey has an average of 40.32%.[15] Albie Morkel with 78 wickets in 77 matches, is the highest wicket taker from the team. He is followed by Ravichandran Ashwin, who has taken 67 wickets, and shares the record of having the best economy rate; 6.28, with Muttiah Muralitharan.[16] Raina with his appearance in 91 matches has batted in 88 innings, the most in the franchise.[17]
