User:Thryduulf/ITN analysis
This is my subjective analysis of stories nominated for WP:ITN, whether posted or not. It excludes:
- Stories nominated for the recent deaths section;
- Nominations for removing items from Ongoing;
- Any stories that were stale when nominated;
- Nominations that were withdrawn before a consensus could be formed.
All nominations are for blurbs unless noted otherwise.
- Region is the primary country or region to which the story relates
- R indicates whether the event is listed at WP:ITN/R
- Topic is a high level indication of the type of story (e.g. international politics, natural disaster, etc)
- Date is the date of nomination (not necessarily date of the event)
- A indicates whether there is a standalone target article. In all cases I've only considered the article(s) listed in the "Article" parameter of the nomination template.
- A is a standalone article (or articles) specifically about the event, two letters indicate target articles fall in different categories.
- B is one or more sections on a slightly wider article (e.g. section about the final on an article about a sports competition)
- C is an update to one or more wider article(s) (e.g. update of a biography due to death)
- P is whether the story was posted. RD indicates a story was nominated for a blurb but posted to RD.
- Q indicates whether there were quality issues with the article.
- "Yes" indicates the story would have been posted if it weren't for quality issues.
- "Part" indicates that there were quality issues and that these played a part in why it wasn't posted but they were not the only reason
- "?" indicates there were quality issues but it is unclear if it would have been posted otherwise
- "No" indicates either that there were quality issues but these were not the reason why the story was not posted, or that there were no quality issues.
- O is my subjective opinion. A indicates I think process worked correctly; B indicates I think it worked incorrectly; C it's unclear.
- A1 - Should have been posted and was posted (or would have been if there were no quality issues)
- A2 - Should not have been posted and was not posted (for reasons other than quality)
- B1 - Should have been posted but wasn't posted (for reasons other than quality)
- B2 - Should not have been posted but was (or would have been if there were no quality issues
- C1 - Should have been posted but wasn't posted (but unclear if it would have been if quality wasn't a factor)
- C2 - Should not have been posted and was not posted (but unclear if it would have been if quality wasn't a factor)

Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong Express Rail | No | China | Infrastructure/Engineering | 2018-09-23 | B | No | ? | Quality was the main issue and not resolved before nomination was stale. Part of a larger project but consensus about significance of this section was also unclear.
I believe this part was significant on its own. |
C1 |
Interstate 95 completed | No | USA (Penn.) | Infrastructure/Engineering | 2018-09-22 | BC | No | No | Not very significant even within the USA, trivial on a global scale. | A2 |
Iranian military parade attack | No | Middle East (Iran) | Violence or terrorism | 2018-09-22 | A | Yes | No | A significant attack on civilians (incl. children) and unusual for Iran. Quality was borderline.
I agree with significance but not sure about quality at the time of posting. |
A1 |

[Nomination hampered by very poor blurbs and lack of explicit target at first.] |
A1 |
Death of Trần Đại Quang | No | Vietnam | Domestic politics | 2018-09-21 | C | No | ? | Probably would have been posted as blurb (death of a head of state while in office) but not guaranteed as consensus was weak.
[Article was blanked as a copyright violation.] |
C1 |
Brexit negotiations | No | EU (mainly UK) | International politics | 2018-09-21 | C | No | No | Not a significant development in the ongoing Brexit saga.
[SNOW closed after four opposes within 10 minutes of nomination] |
A2 |
MV Nyerere sinking | No | Tanzania | Transportation accident | 2018-09-21 | A | Yes | No | Discussion focused almost entirely on article quality with significance being unquestioned. ("Significance goes without saying.") | A1 |
Naga City, Cebu landslide | No | Philippines | Natural disaster | 2018-09-21 | A | Yes | No | Discussion focused almost entirely on article quality with significance being unquestioned. ("a significant story due to the deaths" [at least 30 at the time of the comment]) | A1 |
2018 China–United States trade war | No | China, USA | International politics | 2018-09-19 | C | No | No | Only a small point in a very slow moving, long-term story. No impact on individuals. | A2 |
70th Primetime Emmy Awards | Yes | USA | Entertainment | 2018-09-18 | A | No | Part | The article quality was significantly below standard.
The significance of the event was debated without apparent consensus, but this was in part based on article quality so would probably have been posted with sufficient quality, but difficult to be certain. I would have supported due to being ITN/R had quality been sufficient. Whether it should be ITN/R is not relevant here. |
C1 |
Vontae Davis halftime retirement | No | USA | Domestic sport | 2018-09-17 | C | No | No | Not significant enough an event. Had Davis been a household name/super outstanding player the outcome might have been different. | A2 |
Eliud Kipchoge marathon world record | No | Global | International sport | 2018-09-16 | C | Yes | No | Significant record (posted on previous two occasions in 2011 and 2013) beaten by a significant margin.
[Nominator was clear that posting sports records is rare but this was not discussed further.] |
A1 |
Retirement of Delta II rocket | Yes | Global / USA | Space exploration / technology | 2018-09-16 | AC | Yes | No | It's ITN/R and the article quality is good enough.
[This probably wouldn't have been posted had it not been ITN/R due to lack of consensus for or against as there were few comments and all opinions were explicitly weak] I'm not convinced rocket type retirements should be ITN/R, but the event clearly meets the current criteria and so I agree it was right to post. |
A1 |
Hurricane Florence | No | USA (mainly Carolinas) | Extreme weather | 2018-09-15 | B | Yes | No | Catastrophic flooding, record-breaking rainfall, large-scale evacuations, significant media coverage. | A1 |
Typhoon Mangkhut (2018) | No | East Asia (Philippines, China, Taiwan) | Extreme weather | 2018-09-15 | B | Yes | No | Massive storm, significant number of deaths.
[Article quality was initially very poor, meaning posting was relatively slow, leading to accusations of bias for posting Hurricane Florence but not this, despite the reasons being unrelated to geography] |
A1 |
Hurricane Florence | No | USA (mainly Carolinas) | Extreme weather | 2018-09-14 | B | No | No | Too soon. Wait until the effects have happened and been reported. | A2 |
Massachusetts gas explosions | No | USA (Mass.) | Disaster | 2018-09-14 | A | No | No | Event of only local significance.
[Article had quality issues when first nominated but these were resolved before discussion concluded] |

Swedish general election, 2018 | Yes | Sweden | Domestic politics | 2018-09-10 | B | No | Yes | Significant article quality problems.
[The result of the election was not immediately clear and the article did a very bad job of explaining the situation, adding to the confusion with apparent inaccuracies] |
A1 |
2018 US Open (tennis) | Yes | Global | International sport | 2018-09-09 | B | No | Yes | Article about the tournament significantly below standard - insufficient prose, insufficient references. Not improved by the time it was stale.
Consensus against including Serena Williams' outburst in the blurb. |
A1 |
WTC-Cordlant subway station | No | USA (New York) | Infrastructure/Engineering | 2018-09-09 | C | No | No | Local news with no national significance. | A2 |
Jack Ma retirement | No | Global / China | Business | 2018-09-08 | C | No | No | Run of the mill - business people retire and shift focus all the time. "We don't post retirements" | A2 |
Hery Rajaonarimampianina | No | Madagascar | Domestic politics | 2018-09-11 | C | No | No | Routine part of the political process. | A2 |
Jair Bolsonaro stabbed | No | Brazil | Domestic politics, violence | 2018-09-07 | B | Yes | No | Significant development in the presidential election race. Would undoubtedly have been posted had it happened to Trump or Clinton in 2016. | A1 |
Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics | No | Global | Science | 2018-09-09 | C | Yes | No | [This was a controversial posting, with about equal support and oppose. A no consensus close would not have surprised me.]
For: Lots of coverage about a notable and lucrative award. Seen as a response to being left our of 1974 Nobel prize award. Against: Coverage is mainly human interest. Wouldn't get as much coverage if she was male. Is prize really notable? I would have supported posting this as the nature and quantity of the media coverage indicated significance. |
A1 |
Decriminalization of homosexuality in India | No | India | Domestic politics, Human rights | 2018-09-06 | BC | Yes | No | Major, unexpected ruling affecting the world's largest democracy. Front page news in many countries. More significant than gay marriage in the USA which was posted.
Opposing view that "This particular culture war is over and has been for a long time." was supported by some but ultimately rejected as being culturally biased. [Article quality was not universally agreed.] |
A1 |
2018 Iburi earthquake | No | Japan | Natural disaster | 2018-09-06 | A | Yes | No | Significant earthquake, article is good quality. | A1 |
Russian involvement in Salisbury poisonings | No | UK, Russia | International politics, Crime | 2018-09-05 | B | No | No | Very high profile news story; would be posted if it was in the USA. Blurb can be worded to avoid BLP issues.
We post convictions not accusations, was previously posted twice (when the poisonings happened, when the diplomatic row started), possible BLP Crime problems. For me the major points are that these were accusations not even charges and the story had already been featured twice. |
A2 |
Typhoon Jebi (2018) | N | Japan | Extreme weather | 2018-09-05 | A | Yes | No | Significant weather event - deadly and destructive, article is good enough. | A1 |

Pakistani Presidential elections | Yes | Pakistan | National politics | 2018-09-04 | B | Yes | No | INTR, article good enough.
Significant opposition due to the president being a figurehead and the PM having the real power. I actively disagree that figurehead heads of state should be ITNR but they currently are and consensus was not reached to change this so posting was correct. |
A |
Sentencing of two Reuters journalists | No | Myanmar | Human rights, Press freedom | 2018-09-03 | B | Yes | No | [Consensus for posting was very weak]
Significant story, in the news, update sufficient Not significant unless we're righting great wrongs, not massively in the news. |
