Gen'ei Toshi
[edit]Gen'ei Toshi (幻影都市, lit. "Illusion City") is a cyberpunk-themed role-playing video game released for both the MSX Turbo R and the PC-98 in 1991 by Microcabin, and re-released in a slightly improved version in 1993 for the Sega CD by Mega CD. The game was never localized outside of Japan but was one of the more resource-intensive games ever written for the MSX, and ran slowly even on the Turbo R, a late-generation MSX computer. The game is somewhat unique in the genre for its' lack of a world map, taking place entirely inside the massive urban sprawl of Hong Kong.
The story takes place in the future, twenty years after Hong Kong was devastated by an unspecified disaster in which demonic creatures who masquerade as humans were released onto the earth. Tien Ren, the main character, is a 'diver' who is specially trained to find and destroy these creatures. He is pulled into conflict with SIVA, the malevolent corporation that rules the city, and the Mo Tian Sect, a cult which believes it can cure the ills of society through devotion to spiritual ideals and thus bring about a utopia. An incomplete fan translation has been released.
Overview
[edit]Tien Ren is visited by Mei Hong, who has found a young girl called Ho Mei passed out beside the highway. Looking into the incident, Tien Ren becomes embroiled in a conflict with both the executive council of SIVA and the Mo Tian sect. He enlists the aid of both old and new friends.
Characters

Kasch

Gameplay
[edit]Gameplay takes place in two layers, combat and exploration. Combat is similar to the Phantasy Star series, with an over-the-shoulder view of opponents. In common with most role-playing video games, it is turned-based. Enemies are physically encountered during exploration, and then combat is entered. Defeating enemies yields experience, which makes your characters stronger and grants access to more powerful abilities.
During exploration, Tien Ren and his comrades move around Hong Kong, normally by spinner, flying cars similar to the vehicles of the same name in the film Blade Runner. The city is divided into several different areas, most of which contain shops and places to sleep and regenerate hit points and magic points, and some of which contain dungeons that must be explored for various reasons.
