Bryan Battle (born September 21, 1994) is an American professional mixed martial artist. He currently competes in the Welterweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Competing professionally since 2019, Battle was the middleweight tournament winner in the 29th season of The Ultimate Fighter.[2]
Background
[edit]Born in Maryland, Battle grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina.[3] During his childhood in Charlotte, he and his family were homeless for a short period of time, due to an accidental house fire caused by one of his cousins.[4]
Battle began training MMA at age 21 in 2016, when he weighed 300 lbs. Soon after, he decided to drop out of college to pursue a career as a mixed martial artist.[4] Battle worked as a carpenter until he was able to make a living as a fighter.[5]
Mixed martial arts career
[edit]Early Career
[edit]Battle began competing in mixed martial arts in 2017 as, earning an amateur record of 8–2 and gaining notable wins over future UFC fighters such as Cody Brundage and Impa Kasanganay.[6] During his amateur career, Battle fought at middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight. After turning professional in 2019, he fought in multiple regional promotions across his native North Carolina and the Southern United States, compiling an 5–1 professional record, with 4 stoppage wins.[7][8]
The Ultimate Fighter 29
[edit]In April 2021, it was announced that Battle would be a cast member on The Return of The Ultimate Fighter: Team Volkanovski vs. Team Ortega competing in the middleweight tournament.[7] On the show, Battle first defeated Kemran Lachinov via unanimous decision[9] and in the semi-finals he defeated Andre Petroski via second round submission (ninja choke).[10] Battle then went on to win the final against Gilbert Urbina via submission (rear naked choke) in the second round at UFC on ESPN: Barboza vs. Chikadze.[11]

The bout was contested at a catchweight of 173 lbs, as Battle missed the welterweight non-title fight limit by two pounds, and he was fined a percentage of his purse, which went to Green.[16] He won the fight by knockout just 14 seconds into the first round, earning him the Performance of the Night award, despite having missed weight. [17]
