History

[edit]

Richard Bennett created the first system dynamics computer modeling language called SIMPLE (Simulation of Industrial Management Problems with Lots of Equations) in the spring of 1958. In 1959, Phyllis Fox and Alexander Pugh wrote the first version of DYNAMO (DYNAmic MOdels), an improved version of SIMPLE, and the system dynamics language that became the industry standard for over thirty years. Forrester published the first, and still classic, book in the field titled Industrial Dynamics in 1961.[2]

DYNAMO I

DYNAMO II was written in AED,"ALGOL Extended for Design". AED was a systems language for the IBM 7090 and IBM 360 developed at MIT System Laboratory ca. 1965 by a team led by Douglas T. Ross (now at Softech). AED is an extension of ALGOL 60 with records ("plexes"), pointers, and dynamic allocation.

This heritage led to the Micro-DYNAMO dialect developed in UCSD Pascal, and delivered on the Apple II and IBM PC.
