PERSONAL LIFE:

Rob Drummond is a linguist who is based in Manchester in the UK. His research partner is Erin Carrie. Drummond often looked at sociolinguistic variation, urban adolescent speech, dialects, linguistic ethnography and identity. Drummond is the head of Youth Language at the Manchester Centre for Youth Studies; he is also a reader in the department of languages at the Manchester Metropolitan University. At this University he supervises PhD students and teaches sociolinguistics and phonetics to the final year of undergraduates and MA students. He and his partner Erin Carrie have been awarded an AHRC grant to continue their work on Manchester Voices which are multiple studies that explore different accents, dialects and identities. Carrie and Drummond also set up another project called the Accentism Project.

Drummond alone has been awarded another grant which was called the Leverhulme Trust project grant which was granted for a project which was supposed to express inner city youth identity through multicultural urban British English. Drummond was awarded this grant in 2014, however he started this project in 2013 while he was looking at the speech of 14-16 year olds. I will be going through this project more thoroughly under the subheading ‘research’.

In 2010 Drummond was awarded with a PHD in Linguistics from the university of Manchester.

He currently undertakes and supervises research in sociolinguistics and especially focuses on multiple areas, such as:

• Language variation and change • Urban youth language • Sociolinguistics and grime music • Dialect acquisition • Sociolinguistic variation in a second language • Language and identity • The acquisition of linguistic variation • Sociolinguistics and language teaching

CURRENT RESEARCH:

The projects that Drummond is currently doing have many different aims to the research, but they mainly focus on the youth and the way they speak. The projects he is currently undertaking are called ‘UrBEn-ID’ which is also known as Urban British English and Identity, Manchester Voices and The Accentism Project.

UrBEn-ID:

As mentioned in his personal life, in 2014, Drummond was awarded with a trust in order to fund for the research for this project. In this project, Drummond was researching the speech of adolescents in Manchester, he was especially looking at those in Manchester who were educated in the Pupil Referral Unit.

Whilst doing this work for two years, he was partnered alongside Dr Susan Dray, she was help to Drummond as she would collect ethnographic data as well as speech data from the Pupil Referral Units as well as mainstream schools in Manchester.

Drummond wanted the findings to bring awareness to the changing nature of young, urban speech. He also wanted the project to explore ways that certain linguistic features are used in the construction and negotiation of the identities of the young people.

Drummond published a book on this project in 2018 called Researching Urban Youth Language and Identity.

MANCHESTER VOICES:

Drummond is carrying out the project Manchester voices alongside his colleague called Erin Carrie. Manchester voices consists of multiple different research projects that have the aim to investigate and celebrate the different accents and dialects found within Greater Manchester. One of the other aims of this project is to uncover the underlying perceptions of various accents of the ten boroughs of the county.

THE ACCENTISM PROJECT:

Drummond is doing this project alone. The main aim of this project is to raise awareness of language-based prejudice and discrimination. This project has not done much yet as it is a recent one, however so far, they have invited people to share their stories and experiences of linguistic prejudice, discrimination and stereotyping.

PREVIOUS RESEARCH:

Previously, before Drummond was doing the projects that he is currently doing, he also concentrated on other projects, such as the Manchester Centre for Youth Studies, Vowel Colours, and his PhD research.

MANCHESTER CENTRE FOR YOUTH STUDIES:

Drummond is a founding member of this project as well as the head of youth language at the Manchester centre for youth studies. In this centre, they bring together researchers from across the university in order to explore meanings, experiences and representations of the youth and how they have developed and differed over the years of research. The Manchester Centre for Youth Studies provides an opportunity to look at new perspectives and approaches by analysing different trends by comparing and contrasting them against one another. The centre provides lots of different academic subjects, such as Sociology, criminology, linguistics, English, education, history and many more. The main aim for the future of the centre is to create and become a focus of excellence.

VOWEL COLOURS:

In 2010 Drummond launched a project looking at the link between vowel and colour perception. He first tried to find if people were able to find different vowels in different colours and he then went to see if the people’s accents changed the association between the vowel and colour perception. Some of the findings that Drummond found were presented at the BAAP Colloquium in 2012.

PUBLICATIONS:

Drummond has published two books:

MEDIA:

Drummond often appears on the BBC radio discussing various different topics. Some of these topics could include; the verb, accent and regional identity, vowel colours, the subjunctive, insects and language, the moon, accent and status/identity. He has also featured on BBC breakfast.

TEACHING AND SUPERVISION:

Drummond is currently a reader in the department of languages, an information and communications at Manchester Metropolitan University. At the MMU, Drummond teaches specific undergrad and postgrad units that are connected to his speciality, sociolinguistics and language variation, phonetics and research methods.

Before Drummond worked at the MMU, he worked at the University of Manchester where he also taught various undergrad Linguistics and English Language courses, he also taught MA TESOL and MA Educational Technology and TESOL courses in the school of education.

Before he worked at University of Manchester, he was an EFL teacher and also a teacher trainer.
