Is that freedom? Would that be freedom—allowing a poor tao who owes his landlord to be sent to jail—which you so proudly claim the Filipino enjoyed under the former regime? The orators spoke of the provision in our Constitution which permits the President to suspend the right of habeas corpus under certain circumstances, such as when rebellion, insurrection or imminent danger exists. From where did the Filipino makers of the Constitution copy that provision? From the Act of Congress itself. That was a power given to the American governors-general, and nobody here tonight had protested against the exercise of that power while it was in their hands. Will you, I ask, have less faith in your own President, the man chosen by your own people, a man of your own flesh and blood? Will you have less faith in him than in a foreign governor-general? [Applause.] When was the right of habeas corpus denied in the Philippines, and by whom? It was denied during the first years of the American occupation, if you could still remember the concentration camps in Batangas. Did the Government of the Philippines, while it was purely in American hands, ever consider the Filipino and his existence as its main concern ? When did you have a bank organized to promote Filipino commercial interests? When did you have a bank, the Philippine National Bank, organized to help Filipino farmers, Filipino industrialists? It was established only when the Philippines had the Senate, when we had Harrison, who, as our American governor-general then, permitted the Filipinos to govern this country. And it was because Governor-General Wood tried to undo what that former American governor-general had done that I said: “I would rather have a government run like hell by Filipinos than a government run like heaven by Americans.”

A nation of ethical and decent men and women working together to make the world a better place than it is now. Filipino values are a set of ideals that have historically played a significant role in the lives of the majority of Filipinos. This Philippine beliefs system consists of a particular set of beliefs, moral conventions, ethical behaviors, etiquette, and cultural and personal values nurtured by their society.
Your land is beautiful. It has a tremendous history as well as a fantastic future. The Philippines is a wonderful country with a rich history and a bright future. The Philippines is home to world-famous natural wonders including an underground river and rice terraces, world-class diving locations rich in biodiversity, vibrant festivals that celebrate the country's unique culture, and friendly residents who are renowned as some of the world's happiest.

The lives and treasures of your heroes, martyrs, and soldiers have been devoted to the Philippines of yesterday. The unselfish and daring statesmen who have dedicated their lives to the cause of the Philippines today have made the country proud. The Philippines of the future will be a land of plenty, happiness, and liberty. Filipinos are anarchists who have waged two bloodless revolutions against corrupt regimes. The presence of 12 English-language major newspapers, seven national television networks, hundreds of cable television channels, and 2,000 radio stations demonstrates the Philippines' vibrant democracy.
