"Emigrated to"

[edit]

Hi,

I noticed you've been changing instances of the phrase "emigrated to" to "immigrated to", with the edit summary, "you emigrate from, you immigrate to". I'm not sure if this is an Australian or American usage, but "emigrated to" is quite acceptable, and actually more common according to ngrams, particularly in British English.

My understanding has always been that "emigrated to" is synonymous with "went to live in", while "immigrated to" is synonymous with "came to live in" and so implies the point of view of the writer. Again, this may be down to regional variation - I'm British.

Best wishes, Jean-de-Nivelle (talk) 12:51, 7 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
