Response to welcome message

Wow, that was fast! How did you manage to welcome me so speedily - by monitoring recent changes? I'd estimate your message popped up within a minute of creating this account. Anyways, I'm not entirely new to this but gave up my old account months ago. Had planned on giving up editing, but got sucked in again. Seems like I'm back for now. Thank you for the welcome. --IP 80.166.158.89 03:22, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much. I am also contributing Turkish Wikipedia and the other Wikis. When i am online i will be there... Görüsürüz. --Yolcu 10:27, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Anonymous Users

My sentiments are the same, though a fair bit cooler: I fail to see your objection to anonymous editing. Surely a self-proclaimed Democratic Socialist such as yourself can appreciate the tenets of libertarianism that esteem a degree of anonymity. Not all anonymous IPs are vandals, let alone n00bs, and might, for whatever reason, simply want to edit anonymously. I too have an account, but due to the fact that Wikipedia seems to inhibit its login cookies for lasting more than an hour or remaining after temporarily leaving the site, I've decided to give up on logging in. Beyond that, anonymous IPs tend to stay the same for longer than you'd think, they essentially are, in and of themselves, screen names. But thanks for the considerations anyway. 66.229.227.145 23:59, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thus the message that I often contradict myself. Truthfully, my objection is not to anonymous editing but rather to anonymous editing from shared IP accounts. It is extremely difficult to contact Shared IP users and next to impossible to block them for abuse (in cases such as this). I think that if we could find a way to require all users connected through Shared IPs to register we would cut down on vandalism by more than half, and if all users were required to register, I bet we could eliminate 90% of all vandalism. The vast majority of vandalism is from IP accounts, and while I believe that allowing IP users to edit does bring in a lot of legitimate editors, it seems as though the problems it causes far outweigh the benefits. But that's just my opinion, and most users have a different mindset. AmiDaniel (Talk) 00:33, 2 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I see your point, and for the most part, I agree. I guess one thing that irks me is that whenever I edit from an IP address I find that people are stumbling over themselves to welcome me to Wikipedia and to induce me into making an(other) account. Also, as I noted before, I have my reasons for not using an account. Then again, I have to acknowledge the fact that Wikipedia isn't like the rest of the web or any democracy: it's a collaborative effort in sculpting an encyclopedia, and this requires a level of accountability not found in day-to-day situations. It's a careful balance, and I'm sorry for being so short with you before. 66.229.227.145 01:43, 2 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

do your job right

i was recently accused of 'vandalising' the venetian snares discography which is incorrect. if you maybe did your homework before making assumptions you might actually find out that the album WAS originally titled "The Stupid Chocolate Wheelchair Album" (LOOK IT UP) and then this website might not be such an effing JOKE. —This unsigned comment was added by 24.226.54.173 (talkcontribs) .

"Originally (and, as far as Funk was concerned, currently) called 'The Stupid Chocolate Wheelchair Album', but Mike Paradinas decided the title would be pointlessly provocative, so removed the 'Stupid'" (The Chocolate Wheelchair Album). Frankly, this probably was just a content dispute, but your insolence toward me and Wikipedia makes me hesitant in removing my warning. Such personal attacks are themselves vandalism, and we simply cannot tolerate such behavior. I encourage you to get an account and consider contributing positively to our encyclopedia rather than belittling the hard work of others. AmiDaniel (Talk) 00:26, 2 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia

So anyone can edit any page in Wikipedia ? —This unsigned comment was added by 219.89.236.114 (talkcontribs) .

Yes, anyone can edit any article (that's not protected) in Wikipedia. However, other editors may disagree with your edits and may remove, revert, or otherwise modify them. If you'd like to contribute to Wikipedia, though, I'd like to encourage you to register for an account. Feel free to contact me if you have any more questions. hello

i cut a part of the Gunther and The Sunshine girls text because it was repetition. although english is not my first language, i believe the least i could do is correct that mistake. thank you for understanding.

False Accusation

Hello, i got some message from you accusing me of vandalising some Anglican Grammar School page. this is a lie as i have only EVER updated the lemonheads page as far as i know. don't accuse strangers of flase crimes or risk becoming a victim yourself. regards, Ross —This unsigned comment was added by 220.236.168.28 (talkcontribs) .

Unfortunately, it is not a "LIE" that someone from this account vandalized both the Anglican Church Grammar School and the Brisbane Boys' College articles. It may not have been you, for as you are editing from an anonymous account, it is entirely possible that one of hundreds of users operating on this shared IP made those edits. I ran a Whois query on this IP and uncovered that it is indeed a shared IP registered to the ISP Optus Internet in Chatswood, Sydney (as you'll see in the message I placed at this talk page's header). The only edits ever made by this IP, however, were to the two articles mentioned above and the message you posted on my talk page--no one from this IP has ever edited the Lemonheads article (see contribs). I apologize for the inconvenience of receiving these warning messages; however, you can very easily avoid such frustrations by registering for an account. Having your own account will alleviate the anonymity and uncertainty involved in attempting to communicate with you, and you will only be held accountable for your own edits. This is yet another example of why I believe that anonymous editing should not be allowed. In the future, I'd like to advise you to please try to maintain a certain level of civility when you believe someone has wronged you, as your hostility toward me was received much as you received these "false accusations." AmiDaniel (Talk) 10:01, 2 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
well, i don't live in Chatswood, and i don't care how you found me. all i care is that i don't take kindly to false accusations. if you make it your business to go after people, then make sure you do it right. according to the page on the lemonheads which i updated, my IP address is: 58.104.225.84. these technological matters are of little concern to me. if my ip has changed or whatever, i don't care. and as far as 'restistering' is concerned, i shall do as i please, which is nothing at all. —This unsigned comment was added by 220.236.168.28 (talkcontribs) .
Well, I really don't take kindly to your personal attacks on me. A user from the IP you provided did modify the Lemonheads and Massive Attack, and as you've now recognized that you are editing from a different account than you were before, I don't see why it is so difficult for you to understand that the above messages were not "false accusations," but rather messages intended for another user from this IP. If you refuse to register, then you will likely continue to receive such messages--the only way to avoid it is to set aside three seconds, click here, and create an account. It's really not very difficult. Why not help me out by simply being responsible and getting an account, rather than wasting my time, time which could be spent reverting vandalism and otherwise preserving the integrity of Wikipedia, with your petty complaints? AmiDaniel (Talk) 10:27, 2 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
it surprises me that for someone who knows full well that anonymous IP address that have multiple uses are abound, that you would then assume that your attacks would find their intended redipients, and not total strangers. how many of your attacks go astray? you certainly haven't learnt your lesson yet.. so either it's not many, or this is some thinly veiled attempt go get everyone to 'register'. never did i imagine i would attract the attention of the wikistasi! feel free to re-edit this back into the 'appropriate' format. i neither know how, or care! so to conclude, the fault of such messages is not my own for not registering, it's yours for sending them. —This unsigned comment was added by 220.236.168.28 (talkcontribs) .

hey the aaa.png picture was an actual picture of a scene from the year of living dangerously that I saved from an online page in my documents. Hi, my page

Hi, I am Greg Childers, the person you said my bio was a product of speedy deletion. If I become successful by accomplishing something big in the next few years, can I have my biography on here? I know if I don't put it on here, someone will. :-) —This unsigned comment was added by Gregsuperstar (talkcontribs) .

If you become highly succesful and meet the notability requirements of WP:BIO, someone will likely write the article for you. Writing articles about yourself though is highly discouraged (see WP:AUTO). AmiDaniel (Talk) 05:31, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! Look forward to it~ - Glen T C 00:02, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've been going through CAT:CSD and I saw several pages with speedy tags added (by you) using vandalproof, how is that coming along? Note there are 3 new people on your "register" list, myself included. Prodego talk 02:28, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It's coming along pretty well. Right now, I'm mainly just working on minor interface details, trying to make it a little easier for users other than myself to understand what everything does. I also just added a short routine that substitutes any test templates on userpages edited by VandalProof ... the one "problem" I'm having with that routine is that it "substitutes" commented templates (<!--{{test4}}--> becomes <!--{{subst:test4)-->) which I think I'm just going to leave because I don't think it's necessarily a problem (or is it?). I'm also starting a simple help file on it and improving the welcome page. So long as nothing (work, school, non-Wikipedia life) big comes up this week, I'll probably have it ready for download this weekend, so be sure to check back if you don't hear from me. AmiDaniel (Talk) 03:26, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well make sure any inside <nowiki> tags aren't counted, there might be applications for that, also admin rollback is much faster, you should eventually integrate that. Prodego talk 04:03, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Admin rollback works like this, the page called is: "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/index.php?title={{INSERTTITLE}}&action=rollback&from={{WHOTOROLLBACK}}&token={{SECRETTOKEN}}

Prodego talk 04:08, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, thanks. I'll have to work that in somehow. Just one question: What is SECRETTOKEN? Is that the oldid? Or can it be omitted? AmiDaniel (Talk) 04:23, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The token is the key, each admin has one, it is like a password. I don't know why it is so important, I have done some tests, and it seems you have to be logged in too, but... There would need to be an option to specify it in the settings. I don't know about the second question. Prodego talk 11:39, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Apperently the token is "a precaution against session hijacking", and it changes too, it has worked before though, in CoolCat's IRCBot. Prodego talk 11:55, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You deleted my name from your requests page, was this intentional? Prodego talk 16:49, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No problem! :-) Prodego talk 21:56, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Userpage Vandalism

I am offended by the users use of the word: Media Junkie in his/her profile.

I take it personally when someone uses that term, thus I changed it to something more objective. I believe the change should stand. —This unsigned comment was added by 150.243.192.23 (talkcontribs) .

I'm sorry if the term offends you, but you can't remove content from userpages that are not your own. Userspace is not subject to WP:NPOV, and users can freely post whatever they want about themselves there. If you feel that this statement on his userpage is a personal attack or otherwise in violation of Wikipedia's policies (which I don't believe it to be), then consider talking to the user or an admin about the issue. AmiDaniel (Talk) 02:53, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vandal Proof

Greetings Daniel - I have over 8000 edits, have done hundreds of reverts and also speedy tagging, and am applying to be granted access to vandalproof. Regards, Blnguyen | Have your say!!! 03:11, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Everything looks good to me. I'll add you to the list right away, and I'll try to notify you once a download becomes available. If everything goes well, I should have it ready on Sunday, so check back if you don't hear from me. AmiDaniel (Talk) 03:31, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Any chance that there will be an OS X port? --Nlu (talk) 07:28, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have to say that's something I haven't really taken into account as I don't have much experience with Macs. I'm not entirely sure how Macs handle Windows executables, but the app is based on the VB6 platform and is dependent upon the standard Windows infastructure (ADVAPI31.DLL, GDI32.DLL, KERNEL32.DLL, RPCRT4.DLL, USER31.DLL), standard VB6 framework (MSVBVM60.DLL, MSVCRT.DLL), and OLE automation (OLE32.DLL, OLEAUT32.DLL). All of these files are fairly standard windows libraries (especially in XP), and I'm not sure how these dependencies would be handled by Macs. I'm also not sure how it handles OCX dependencies and how the app would interact with the mac rendention of explorer and java. I'll look into it a bit more and get back to you, but right now I don't have much info on the topic. Sorry. AmiDaniel (Talk) 07:43, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi AmiDaniel, thanks for authorizing me to use Vandal Proof! Does Vandal Proof have any particular system or software requirements? (other than OS)

Page Title Removed

Just want to make sure my change to this page is OK with you. Prodego talk 22:12, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That's perfectly fine with me, and you can feel free to improve the page more if you want! ... It's currently on my To-Do list to improve it, as right now it's basically just a test page for initialization (and it stores the userlist--shhhh). AmiDaniel (Talk) 22:17, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Does your program read the page as a page? or does it read the code? If it reads the page, you should put the checkpage on a separate page, and transclude it, so you don't have two lists. Prodego talk 22:23, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sort of a combination of both. There are a variety of tags that I can add to the page to, for instance, disable the app or alert users of upgrades. You'll also notice that a few of the names on the list appear with Html char formatting, such as Can%27t_sleep%2C_clown_will_eat_me, which is partially the reason for having the two separate lists. I want one for people to see and one for the app to see ... copy and paste isn't that difficult. When the page loads in VP, it is stripped of all references to the source page such as edit, edit section, permanent link, discussion, watch, what links here, etc., etc, and since I use the section edits when editing the list, I removed the NOEDITSECTION from the page. You can feel free to laugh at my system, but it actually works suprisingly well. Anyone using the app has no clue how where everything's being stored, which was more or less the goal. AmiDaniel (Talk) 23:09, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Then no one ever sees that page? Isn't it the login page? Prodego talk 23:12, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
They see the parts of the page that they're "allowed" to see, which is pretty much everything about the user list and below the title, as well as the search and basic WP controls (that don't refer back to the page). AmiDaniel (Talk) 23:16, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting plan, although anyone could find it the way I did, perhaps you need a throwaway account just to add people to the list? Prodego talk 23:21, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not really too concerned with people finding it though. Like I said on the talk page, it loads only the last version that I modified on startup. So if user Bob adds his name to the list and then runs the app, it will load the version prior to his addition, where Bob wasn't on the list so he won't be authorized. Unless the vandalism becomes to excessive to handle, I doubt I'll seek page protection or otherwise change it. AmiDaniel (Talk) 23:49, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like you've got it all worked out! Prodego talk 00:00, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Watch out for GPL

Since this program will be released under an opensource licence, it is trivial for someone to make a few edits and remove your authorized user checking mechanism. Indeed, I have already done this with AutoWikiBrowser. Remove this message once you read it if you want. --Mboverload 00:41, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid I don't entirely understand what you mean. Is there some conflict with using user authorization and the GPL license? AmiDaniel (Talk) 04:55, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
When someone says they are releasing software under the GPL, it usually means it is opensource software. I guess it is not going to be released, in which case my comment is moot and pointless.
Someone with the source code would be able to disable the authorization check in the code and then use it without you authorizing it. --Mboverload 05:21, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, okay, I get what you were saying now. I might eventually release source code but only to trusted users, where it really wouldn't be much of an issue to allow them to see my routines, so long as they understand not to change them (or I could simply remove them). But we'll cross that herdle when we get there. I thought there may have been some issue licensing it under GPL and only allowing use to "select" individuals. Thanks for the warning though. AmiDaniel (Talk) 05:31, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Archiving

I know not of any Wikipedia rule that says one cannot clear one’s own talk page after each finished discussion. Furthermore, not everybody is the journal-keeping "type". Thirdly, one of the great faculties of the CNS is the ability, during REM sleep, to keep needed memories and to trim un-needed memories via growth and atrophy of neurological tissue. The pinnacle example of a deficiency in the ability to erase un-needed memories is autistic savants; they store, and store, and “archive” until they no-longer can function properly in society. Workable memory efficiency is a moral imperative; living in the past is not.--Sadi Carnot 04:40, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. as you are so into archiving, you might want to archive your own talk-page; pages are not supposed to be longer than 32 kilobytes (yours is 69 kilobytes). Adios:--Sadi Carnot 04:40, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, point taken. Just thought I'd make a suggestion. It's actually not a bad idea for me to begin archiving; I think I'll go do that now. AmiDaniel (Talk) 04:53, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't seem like your doing it right; I'll help you, if you don't like it you can revert.--Sadi Carnot 05:18, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You don't like the float archive box? Granted, it doesn't do much to reduce page size when viewing, though it does when editing--I'll probably only keep the most recent archive present on the page at any time. I just wish I could either hide sub-sections of the topmost section (archive 1) or somehow have the links expand the float box. I'm gonna' leave it as it is now because I've got other Wikipedia-related things to do, but I'll experiment with it a little tomorrow. AmiDaniel (Talk) 05:24, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn't seen like you did anything? I'll try to show you a typical style; revert if you don't like it.--Sadi Carnot 05:29, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What do you mean? The archived articles have been moved to User talk:AmiDaniel/Archive1 and that page has then been transcluded within the expandable float box. AmiDaniel (Talk) 05:33, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I know it's not the "typical" way to do it, but I'm not much for conformity. AmiDaniel (Talk) 05:35, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ah yes, I see it; but I thought you would have cleared this page leaving only a link to the archived page at the top? Whatever the case, good luck:--Sadi Carnot 05:37, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A revised version of the proposed policy against censorship is now open for voting. Will you kindly review the policy and make your opinions known? Thank you very much. Loom91 11:18, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #2

The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.

hello, I'm interesting on checking out your new tool. So when you get it ready, can you be kind enough to send me a copy? On the other hand I find a bit odd the fact one needs to request permission in order to use it. Why is that so? -- ( drini's page ) 23:11, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

VandalProof (testing?)

Hello there! First, congrats for designing a nice tool. Just received a message on my talk-page (presumably through this tool) for an article that I recently tagged. Now, there are two things that I would like to bring to your notice: 1) The message says, the article is marked for a speedy, which it is not - its a prod. And 2) I have no subject-matter involvement with the said article other than stub-sorting and/or tagging. Hence, it would be fruitless (and at times annoying) to get a message, rather the message should go to the original author. That said, it's a nice tool and good initiative which I would like to contribute with as well. Cheers! --ΜιĿːtalk 08:38, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just to let you know that I have removed your message from User talk:Cezve because it would have totally confused him. He's new to wikipedia, and I don't think his English is that great—and the article was not actually tagged for speedy delete! Moreover, I've removed the prod tag from Ürün while I was cleaning it up because I feel that a national magazine is notable enough, even if the article itself is no more than a stub. But feel free to list it on AFD if you disagree! :-) GeorgeStepanek\talk 08:41, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Woa, sorry about that. I just fixed a bug and was so eager to test it that I got a little ahead of myself. Not really testing, but nonetheless a careless move on my behalf. I apologize! AmiDaniel (Talk) 08:50, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, now... Both of the above points are contradictig eachother. You may want to reformat the message-text for a newcomer perhaps? Am afraid none of the stub-sorting group or otherwise unrelated users would like to recieve the messages. --ΜιĿːtalk 08:56, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Immediately after this happened, I changed it so that, by default, only editors with more than one edit (and the article's creator) will be informed, as it clearly is quite unnecessary for stub-sorters and spellcheckers to be informed about articles with which they are not particularly involved. The CSD message is, I admit, a horrible one right now -- I think I'm just going to remake one from {{Adw}} that's relatively neutral, less jam-packed with unneccessary info, more subtle, and less overwhelming for newcomers. The current one is, more or less, the same as {{Nn-warn}}, which I've never liked, and I also never liked {{Nothanks-vanity}}. I still feel it helpful to inform invested users when their articles are proded, CSD'd, or AfD'd (as I still remember when my first article was proded without anyone telling me about it). But I'll get this all sorted out... I promise =). AmiDaniel (Talk) 09:03, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi amidaniel. You expressed reservations regarding me using your new revert tool. In the past I have done bold and sometimes pov edits. Some of these have been called vandalism (incorrectly IMHO). Example: I saw someone had a vandal counter template on their page; so I incremented their counter by one! (This was done as a joke). Anyway, if you require more Firefox 1.5 testers, I use this browser on all of Win98, Win2K and WinXP. Regards, rossnixon 04:13, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for approval. I also keep IE 6 updated, and use Sun's latest Java 1.5.06. rossnixon 07:48, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: VandalProof

Hi AmiDaniel. I am very interested in this tool and and I hope that it ends up being a really beneficial tool for the community. I wish I could have done more as far in dealing with the featured article, but my hands were tied. Hopefully that URL will be blacklisted and it won't be an issue. Anyway, thanks for your help and I look forward to seeing what you are able to put together with this new software. --PS2pcGAMER (talk) 10:54, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A Download Is Now Available

I just wanted to let you know that a download of VandalProof has recently been made available. AmiDaniel (Talk) 09:45, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi AmiDaniel. I just wanted to let you know that when I downloaded the file, it didn't include the extension so I had to add the .exe part. I just figured you should know before too many people start to download it. --PS2pcGAMER (talk) 09:54, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Really? I've tried it on four separate computers and haven't add any problems yet. I am a little uneasy hosting the project on a secure server as I'm sure that will likely cause problems for some people, but I had a horible time trying to get it hosted at SourceForge and Gna. Thanks for the heads up though, and I'll look into it a bit more. AmiDaniel (Talk) 09:59, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting. It works fine for me in IE but Firefox is the one with the issue. I'll try it on another box (both browsers) in a minute. --PS2pcGAMER (talk) 10:04, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I just tried downloading it again to see if I could replicate the problem you had, and now it seems to be having problems simply downloading. I think too many people hit it at once and the server's getting overwhelmed ... I'm really going to have to look for a better place to host this. AmiDaniel (Talk) 10:07, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
On my other computer, I got the same situation. IE worked fine, FF just had no extension. I don't have any extensions for Firefox on this other computer, so that wouldn't be interfering. Anyway, I'll check again later in the day and maybe it will work correctly then. For now, I'll try out the program and let you know if I run into any problems. Thanks for your hard work. --PS2pcGAMER (talk) 10:10, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Moderators for VandalProof

Hi, I'd be happy to act as a moderator on VandalProof. I'm not, currently, an admin but am involved with a lot of stuff on Wikipedia, as you can see from the Userboxes on my userpage. I am also invovled in the Mediation Committee, and am currently a nominee to become a member of that Committee. If you've got any questions, I'm happy to answer them. Oh, I'm based in the UK, but am on at all hours (literally) on Wikipedia.--Wisden17 11:44, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

May I extend to you my exceptional Moderating abilities for your disposal :-)

Hi AmiDaniel, as I posted in a message to you above, I love our new tool, thank you. I would be delighted to assist you as a moderator should I "fit the bill" - I've been active realistically since January, just broke te 1K mark, however spend my time exclusively either a) Writing entirely new articles that wiki may be lacking (two today for example) and b) Beating off the nasties who deface wiki. I spend a lot of time on Special:Newpages and Special:Recentchanges for that reason. As such VP is a Godsend. Also, I am in New Zealand so keep wiki secure whilst you all sleep! :) Here's my stats: Stollery (talk · contribs · count) - Hope to hear from you soon! - Glen T C 16:26, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't get the chance with my hectic day today to thank you for extending Moderating privilages, so thank you!. I'm going to sit down now and read up to ensure I can utilize the tools correctly and help all new users. So, thanks again, and you can always email me (mailto:glen@stollery.com) as well. VandalProof

  1. I get the message that my log-in request failed, even though I'm authorized.
  2. I'd like to "apply" to be a VandalProof moderator, though I'm not an admin. Issues

Hey there AmiDaniel, thanks for completing your awesome tool. I just downloaded it now, and after I run it, I'll give you a proper thanks. *Update* I ran the tool, after downloading the .cab, as the standalone exe said I needed a dll, I tried the Setup.exe file, but got this error: Invalid command-line parameters. Unable to continue. After clicking ok, I got a red X dialogue saying, Setup was not completed successfully. Clicking OK again brought me to Run-time error '5': Invalid procedure call or argument. I ran and launched the .exe perfectly, but for some reason it hung on the logging in screen (coincidentally, just as it does for me in AWB--could be something with my sytem, I'll send details if you want). Trying other options, I reached a dialogue under File | Set edit limit, and clicking "cancel". If I cluck OK, nothing happens, but clicking cancel gives me Run-time error '13': Type mismatch. I'm sorry to be throwing all this stuff at you at once, but I'm not really sure what's going on. Feel free to contact me by e-mail or WP. Thanks, Mysekurity [m!] 00:10, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

Moderating

I've tried to approve User:No Guru, User:Ganeshk, and User:James.kendall. However everytime I've tried to add them to the moderate user list and then press update, they disappear on the list as soon as I close and then reopen Vandalproof. --TBC??? ??? ??? 00:52, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I ran into similar weird errors. I approved User:Tawker, but it removed User:Ganeshk and User:James.kendall. I readded them, but then Tawker didn't appear on the list and I had to readd him also. You might want to check the histories of that page to see it. I am tempted to wait on approving further users until you can take a look at it. --PS2pcGAMER (talk) 02:11, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Aha, smart one that I am, I created a tool for moderators to use and then forgot to include the arguments to retrieve the current moderators! Right now the "moderate list" tool only retrieves the last version that I edited, when it obviously should retrieve the last version by any moderator. For now, you're just going to have to add them manually or wait for me to add them. You don't have to worry about doing them in alphabetical order, just add new users to the bottom of the current users list on the welcome page with the user2 template. I'll periodically run the mod list on mine to bring everything back into the right format. Sorry about that!! I'm having an incredibly stressful week (I just now managed to get my internet back up, I've got a paper to write, and I have a program that I have to finish for my *real* job) but I will try to get a minor release ready for this weekend where I'll hopefully be able to fix the mod tools bugs, the cancel bugs, and the jscript bugs. Again, I'm sorry about all these problems, and I hopefully I'll get them all fixed soon! AmiDaniel (Talk) 03:03, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Don't worry about it. Real world stuff always comes before Wikipedia. Any moderator should be willing to put up with any bugs, otherwise we wouldn't have volunteered, so don't let us stress you out. Thanks for your hard work. --PS2pcGAMER (talk) 09:43, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've never actually read it, but I heard about a character named Witchbaby, and I love the name.

No bot here

Hi. No, I'm not using any type of bot. I've never used one and I'm not really very familiar with them. I edit the hard way. I have Firefox which permits me to open up oodles of "tabs" at the same time. That way, I can make similar edits to many pages at the same time and then go back and save them all. This way, routine edits like I am currently doing can be done in an "assembly line" fashion which allows me to get alot done in a pretty short period of time. Feel free to drop me a line on my talk page. See you around! --MatthewUND(talk) 06:40, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vandal proof talk page approvals

I thought that "users who have recently been involved in edit wars" are the ones which cannot be approved to access this talk page. Instead you just violated your own rule, by approving user Asterion Special:Contributions/Asterionin this forum. Just notice his revert war-mongering attitude toward any article that has to do with Albanians, Kosovo, and cities in Kosovo. Hope you take measures to either remove this user from this forum, or ask him to stop his revert war, as a condition to be in your forum. Thanks in advance, Ilir pz 10:44, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

((db-nonsense)) tag?

Is it possible to have one added to the next version at all? (or is it here and I'm blind!) :) Thanks again! - Glen T C 18:11, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't entriely understand what you mean. When you click db-nonsense it posts (or should post) the template on the current version of the article. By the way I've copied this to the Questions section of VP's talk page; please respond there. AmiDaniel (Talk) 21:45, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

{{db-nonsense)} and other thoughts

Sorry I should be more clear.

  1. Under the Propose Deletion --> Speedy Deletion drop downs would a {{db-nonsense)} option be able to be added at all? Also...
  2. Also, the {{test5-n}) button should really be replaced as 99% of users can't actually block.
  3. A newpages section (like the recent changes) would be awesome for catching speedy deletes
  4. Is it possible to have a back browser button added? This means once warned we can get back to the newpages, recent changes or watchlist more easily (I am right clicking and using the back option on the menu but it is cumbersome
  5. Finally, I would encourage a link to a page which explains all the template tags (I created my own here) handy so users don't tag incorrectly.
Don't get me wrong, these are just tiny suggestions and I may be off base... as the softward is fantastic. Reverted about 50 cases this evening alone whilst working!

Thanks Daniel, - Glen T C 11:50, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Approval

Hi AmiDaniel,

If you check my contributions history, you should notice I have kept things as cool as possible, even on the light of harrassment by two wikipedians whose name you should find no trouble to find out. I have repeatedly invited them to discuss on the matter. Please note I was simply reverting blanket reverts which were a complete disregard of everyone else's work (the fact they got banned[2][3] for this says everything). I will not bother you with content discussions as these are certainly too complicated to explain in a line or two and I know you are a busy person, simply note that every single of my edits is referenced and well documented. I understand your concerns on the matter and will gladly wait till next week for your review. Regards, Asterion 19:47, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Daniel,

Thanks very much for your understanding. I downloaded the software and installed it OK. I had a few problems with the TABCTL32 issue but copied and pasted the CAB files into System32 and it is running now. However I still have the problem with the authorisation database you mentioned. Also I am getting Windows XP warnings about having replaced system files with unsigned versions? (I supposed this is because I copied everything instead just TABCTL32.OCX) Thanks, Asterion 12:40, 14 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm hopefully going to have a working install for 1.0.1 (which I think might actually be 1.1.0) ready for download either tomorrow of or Sunday. That should fix your problems with unsigned system files. You are on the authorized list; are you sure that you are signed in as Asterion in Wikipedia within VP's browser? Try clicking on "Sign In / Create an account" and logging in as Asterion. VP uses the IE rendering enginge, so you'll need to be logged in in IE for it to work. AmiDaniel (Talk) 18:33, 14 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure what is wrong. I set the username and then signed in but I still get the following warning:
Your log-in request failed.
You might have entered an incorrect username. Currently, your username is set to Asterion. You can change this at anytime from "Set Username" under the File menu.
You might not be correctly logged into Wikipedia with that username.
You might not be on the list of authorized users. Please post a request for permission to use VandalProof on the VandalProof talk page. If you have received a message stating that you have already been added to the list, please contact the user who posted that message.
I am going to be offline most of the weekend, so it is not a priority right now, but I would appreciate if you could help out when you get a sec. Thanks a lot, Asterion 20:20, 14 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hm... This may be a result of your Wikipedia skin. Try changing it to monobook (if you haven't already) and see if that fixes it. AmiDaniel (Talk) 20:34, 14 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I am using monobook. Could this be related to have IE7 beta installed? I will try on my dektop tomorrow, which is running standard IE6 and see how it goes. Cheers, Asterion 20:53, 14 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I have IE7 so that can't be it - Glen T C 20:55, 14 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Daniel, I am happy to tell you I managed to get the program working OK now (using 1.10). The bad (read good) part is that I am struggling to find many cases of vandalism! --Asterion 16:05, 17 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vandlism Message

Hi,

I was browsing, not logged into my account when I noticed you left a message for: 68.126.5.210 in regards to Richard Belzer.

Please note that this is a dynamic IP address for SBC/AT&T DSL. I recently restarted my computer, so that may be the reason why I was assigned the IP.

While I appreciate your efforts, I can assure you I have not committed any vandalism on Wikipedia (please note my user page for the series of articles I have worked on).

Again, I appreciate your efforts, but please keep in mind that some IP addresses are pool IP addresses for specific ISPs, and as such, authentic users may receive your messages, when the person who commited such acts might not be the holder for that specific IP.
