RfA Flight

Hey Amory. Miss chatting with you on occasion. But I admit I'm here on "business". As one of the more frequent nominators over the last 18 months do you have anyone on tap who might be interested in running in the RfA flight in a couple weeks? If so drop me a line and we can discuss. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 02:27, 3 September 2020 (UTC)

Sadly, no. With COVID and full-time parenting, I put my processes on hold. I've got a (long) to-do list, but can't really commit to researching or being supportive for a week. Best of luck, though! I've missed the last few RfAs, I'll try to get in on these to support. ~ Amory (utc) 15:51, 3 September 2020 (UTC)
Amory thanks for the reply. Love to you and your family, Barkeep49 (talk) 15:52, 3 September 2020 (UTC)

editing .js

Hi Amory. I hope you are doing well. Could you please copy the content of User:Usernamekiran/common.js to User:Usernamekiran/common.js to User:KiranBOT/common.js User:Usernamekiran BOT/common.js? It would be appreciated a lot. —usernamekiran (talk) 20:50, 15 September 2020 (UTC) user renamed. —usernamekiran (talk) 21:24, 15 September 2020 (UTC)

actually, only two scripts would be useful to that new account: importScript('User:Anomie/linkclassifier.js'); and importStylesheet('User:Anomie/linkclassifier.css');. Others would be useless there. —usernamekiran (talk) 21:09, 15 September 2020 (UTC)
and this third one: importScript("User:PleaseStand/userinfo.js"); —usernamekiran (talk) 07:23, 16 September 2020 (UTC)
@Usernamekiran:: Okay, but don't those sort of imply you'll be using the bot account to edit manually? ~ Amory (utc) 10:41, 16 September 2020 (UTC)
Ahhh dumb me, it's an AWB bot.  Done! ~ Amory (utc) 10:43, 16 September 2020 (UTC)
hehe. Also, it will be good to classify links, and users while editing through AWB. Although I wont be logging into that account much. Just for a few minutes before starting edting with bot. Thanks a lot for creating the page. See you around :) —usernamekiran (talk) 10:46, 16 September 2020 (UTC)

Guild of Copy Editors September 2020 Newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors September 2020 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the September GOCE newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since June 2020.

                 Current and upcoming events

September Drive: Our current backlog-elimination drive is open until 23:59 on 30 September (UTC) and is open to all copy editors. Sign up today!

Election reminder: our end-of-year Election of Coordinators opens for nominations on 1 December. Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here.

Drive and Blitz reports

June Blitz: An uncorrected typo (even copy editors make copy editing mistakes!) led to an eight-day "leap blitz" from 14 to 21 June, focusing on requests and articles tagged in May. 19 participating editors claimed 54 copy edits. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

July Drive: Over 750,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event, keeping pace with the previous three self-isolated drives. Of the 38 people who signed up, 30 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here.

August Blitz: From 16 to 22 August, we copy edited articles tagged in June and July 2020 and requests. 12 participating editors completed 37 copy edits on the blitz. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Other news

June election: Jonesey95 was chosen to continue as lead coordinator, assisted by Baffle gab1978, Tdslk, Twofingered Typist, and first-time coordinator Puddleglum2.0. Reidgreg took a break after serving for a couple years. Thanks to everyone who participated!

Progress report: As of 01:33, 18 September 2020 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors had processed 532 requests since 1 January and there were 38 requests awaiting completion on the Requests page. The backlog of articles tagged for copy-editing stood at 433 (see monthly progress graph above).

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Baffle gab1978, Puddleglum2.0, Tdslk and Twofingered Typist.

AFC

Hey can you do me a favour and temporarily create the page Mediawiki:AFC-submit-wizard.js with the content importScript('User:SD0001/AFC-submit-wizard.js'); While I would have liked to finish the script filly and then request it be moved (as I did with Mediawiki:G13-restore-wizard.js and MediaWiki:AFC-add-project-tags.js), this one is different as this is a pretty big script and absence of bugs isn't guaranteed. I naturally don't want to make an editreq request because one person will definitely make a fuss about it. It would be a lot easier to get AFC people to test the script and resolve issues as long as I have editing access. This was discussed at WT:WPAFC#Overhauling draft submission process using javascript

The userspace import is a temporary arrangement of course. The testing etc shouldn't take more than a week, after which the script can be moved over. Thanks for understanding. – SD0001 (talk) 13:02, 1 October 2020 (UTC)

PS: note that creating the mediawiki page doesn't actually "deploy" the wizard -- it won't be discoverable until the AFC templates are edited to link to it (last step of the deployment timeline), which won't be done anytime soon. – SD0001 (talk) 13:03, 1 October 2020 (UTC)
Not sure what you mean by I naturally don't want to make an editreq request because one person will definitely make a fuss about it, what's the likely objection? At any rate, I've created it for ease of testing, etc.; nothing obviously malicious that I can see! Do be honest with folks that it's still under active development and that they're trusting you. ~ Amory (utc) 17:54, 2 October 2020 (UTC)

Mobile.js

Hi! I see that MediaWiki:Mobile.js has been deleted as "No longer needed". Does it mean that en-wiki doesn't support mw:Extension:MobileFrontend anymore or it is supported in some other way? I am curious because our w:ru:MediaWiki:Mobile.js is still there though empty. --Neolexx (talk) 11:14, 20 October 2020 (UTC)

Hi Neolexx, not at all! MediaWiki:Mobile.js is just a page that loads extra scripts for all mobile users; in the past it has typically been used to fix little bugs until a fix upstream can be made. Some recent(ish) examples are for phab:T203615, phab:T249864, and phab:T232759. There's also MediaWiki:Minerva.js, which is everyone using the skin, regardless whether they are on mobile or desktop. ~ Amory (utc) 11:27, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
So Mobile.js is functional but at en-wiki cannot be little bugs anymore "for all mobile users"? (if deleted s "No longer needed") Or the en-wiki paradigm is "this page exists only if contains some useful code"? So empty is deleted, if a bug needs a fix - recreated? I just would like to see the picture in comparison with ru-wiki, nothing more. --Neolexx (talk) 11:48, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
The page is always functional, if there's valid content there. If there's nothing there or it "doesn't exist" then nothing extra happens. There's a default value, which is empty with a comment; sometimes those MediaWiki pages have been deleted (automatically, even) when they're not different from the default. It's a weird namespace! ~ Amory (utc) 12:17, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
Yeah, sounds weird... Good I am not an interface admin, so others have to deal with it :-) And thank you for all your prompt help! --Neolexx (talk) 12:22, 20 October 2020 (UTC)

I see you were the last few edits to the script and was wondering if you could determine why the script doesn't work on diff pages (Special:Diff to give an idea). -- Amanda (aka DQ) 05:58, 7 November 2020 (UTC)

@AmandaNP: It does! Or, it should: do you have a specific diff it wasn't working on? One thing to note is that mainspace was excluded, so was the diff in mainspace? I noted that on the talkpage a while ago, but it wasn't too hard to change so I just edited it to work in mainspace, but only in the diff area up top. ~ Amory (utc) 12:25, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
I guess it's seemingly intermittent. The moment I tried to go looking for it, it worked, though it wasn't the one I found last night. I do use the diff only function, so that shouldn't be an issue. The next one I see, i'll come back and flag it. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 22:56, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
Just to confirm, the gadget didn't work in mainspace at all, diff only or not. ~ Amory (utc) 00:04, 8 November 2020 (UTC)

The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2020 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 01:19, 24 November 2020 (UTC)

I saw you mention on VPT that Apache-licensed code can't be hosted on the wiki. My reading of the FAQ was that permissive licenses (Apache, BSD, MIT, but not GPL) are allowed. If I'm mistaken, can you delete MIT-licensed User:Suffusion of Yellow/diff3.js for me? No one else is using it from what I can tell, and I can keep it on localhost if needed. Suffusion of Yellow (talk) 17:49, 30 November 2020 (UTC)

On further reading (IANAL) looks like I was wrong: Apache can be likely be incorporated here, but not vice-versa. MIT for sure can, though. ~ Amory (utc) 19:32, 30 November 2020 (UTC)

New Page Patrol December Newsletter

Hello Amorymeltzer,

A chart of the 2020 New Page Patrol Queue

Year in review

It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.

Rank Username Num reviews Log
1 DannyS712 bot III (talk) 67,552 Patrol Page Curation

9 Hughesdarren (talk) 4,520 Patrol Page Curation
10 Utopes (talk) 3,958 Patrol Page Curation
Reviewer of the Year

John B123 has been named reviewer of the year for 2020. John has held the permission for just over 6 months and in that time has helped cut into the queue by reviewing more than 18,000 articles. His talk page shows his efforts to communicate with users, upholding NPP's goal of nurturing new users and quality over quantity.

NPP Technical Achievement Award

As a special recognition and thank you DannyS712 has been awarded the first NPP Technical Achievement Award. His work programming the bot has helped us patrol redirects tremendously - more than 60,000 redirects this past year. This has been a large contribution to New Page Patrol and definitely is worthy of recognition.

Hello my friend – a merry Christmas to you and I hope you've been keeping well. Hello,

Is it normal, that in your modifications which were made around 3 a.m. (Paris time), on the page of the Popups.js gadget, that now, the page titles when hovering over a link give special characters like : Catégorie for Category: (in French)?

Is there a solution, where is it done on purpose?

Best regards,

Category:Pages using duplicate arguments in template calls

Hi, after your edits to User:Hans2520/MyWikiSpace.js it is now appearing in Category:Pages using duplicate arguments in template calls. A simple fix would be to put

// <syntaxhighlight lang=javascript>

at the top of the script and

// </syntaxhighlight>

Since these are commented out, it won't break the javascript, but it will prevent the backend software from parsing the {{Infobox person as a template transclusion. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 15:22, 26 January 2021 (UTC)

Thanks — I thought we'd see more of these! Appreciate the speedy response.  Done, via nowiki. ~ Amory (utc) 17:44, 26 January 2021 (UTC)
Thank you! If you want to help out even more, you could help with pages in [71] and related links in Special:WantedTemplates. We are trying to get the list down to under 5000 so that we can see all the problematic pages in articlespace, but the false positives from .js pages are currently adding to the noise. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 22:05, 26 January 2021 (UTC)
@Plastikspork: Oof that's a lot! For that particular case, I cleaned up the uses from users who hadn't been active recently. I think it might be reasonable to ping the others, as given the dates and content I think those pages are probably unused and can be deleted. I can do that if you like. I'll try and peruse that list now and then to help out, but how are you finding the pages that contain them? That first item, {{Id-c‏‎}}, for example. ~ Amory (utc) 14:39, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for your help! The list in Special:WantedTemplates is generated monthly from any transclusions of non-existing templates. In the case of Template:Id-c we quickly fixed it after the list was generated with this edit. The list is cached, so it still shows at the top of the list even though it has been fixed. Pinging the others is a good idea, and in fact, that was the first thing I did here, here, here, here, here, ... The next big ones to fix are [72] [73] and any others that show something in "what links here". If they don't show anything, they have already been fixed. Thanks again! Scripts++ Newsletter – Issue 20

Category:Foo again

Your edit to User:రవిచంద్ర/monobook.js has caused it to appear in Category:Foo. Are you able to fix it or even zap the problem altogether? Timrollpickering (talk) 13:21, 5 February 2021 (UTC)

Yup,  Done! Thanks for the note! ~ Amory (utc) 15:06, 5 February 2021 (UTC)

Hey,

There are several variants of this, with a few people using each. You're welcome to fix them as needed, if you wish. Tks. OneOffUserName (talk) 14:33, 8 February 2021 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Technical Barnstar
Twinkle's /64 feature is already barnstar-worthy, but when I clicked the checkbox, the message "This range has been blocked before" appeared and made my day. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 19:47, 20 February 2021 (UTC)

Just curious...

I see that you're currently flagged as new page reviewer and a recent changes reviewer. Since you're an administrator, you have these rights included. Is there a reason you have these two user rights enabled? It just seems redundant, so I wanted to ask about it... :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 10:04, 24 February 2021 (UTC)

Heh, indeed. NPR was for testing some stuff for Twinkle, but that finished in the summer or fall, so gone! PC reviewer is because of the stupid bug(s) around FlaggedRevs (Special:Permalink/1008619548#Pending Changes again, phab:T234743, phab:T273317, phab:T233561). Giving myself PC reviewer made basically all errors disappear, both in applying/modifying PC protection and reviewing edits. ~ Amory (utc) 11:33, 24 February 2021 (UTC)

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • When blocking an IPv6 address with Twinkle, there is now a checkbox with the option to just block the /64 range. When doing so, you can still leave a block template on the initial, single IP address' talkpage.
  • When protecting a page with Twinkle, you can now add a note if doing so was in response to a request at WP:RfPP, and even link to the specific revision.
  • There have been a number of reported issues with Pending Changes. Most problems setting protection appear to have been resolved (phab:T273317) but other issues with autoaccepting edits persist (phab:T275322).

Needtrans/duflu templates

Hello! Have you seen my post re the Needtrans and Duflu templates on GitHub? Largoplazo (talk) 22:54, 27 March 2021 (UTC)

Sorry for missing this note Largoplazo; I've seen it now, though that's clearly too late. I've stopped contributing to the Twinkle project. ~ Amory (utc) 10:04, 18 April 2021 (UTC)

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, F7 (invalid fair-use claim) subcriterion a has been deprecated; it covered immediate deletion of non-free media with invalid fair-use tags.
  • Following a request for comment, page movers were granted the delete-redirect userright, which allows moving a page over a single-revision redirect, regardless of that redirect's target.

Technical news

  • When you move a page that many editors have on their watchlist the history can be split and it might also not be possible to move it again for a while. This is because of a job queue problem. (T278350)
  • Code to support some very old web browsers is being removed. This could cause issues in those browsers. (T277803)
