New features for course pages

Several noticeable improvements to the EducationProgram extension (in addition to some small bug fixes) will go live on or around 2014-01-23:

Notifications

All participants in a course (students, instructors, volunteers) will receive Notifications whenever their course talk page is edited. Thus, editors can use course talk pages to send messages they want the whole class to be aware of, and the class participants are likely to see them.

Special:Contributions student notice

For users enrolled as students in courses that are active, a notice will appear at the top of Special:Contributions noting which course(s) they are enrolled in. This will make it easy for users who come across the work of student editors to find out that they are part of a course and identify other class participants.

Adding articles

Course instructors and volunteers will be able to assign articles to student editors, instead of all articles needing to be added by the student editors themselves.

Adding students

Instructors and volunteers will be able to add users as students in courses, instead of all student editors needing to enroll for themselves. This makes it easier to maintain complete lists of students, and also makes the extension more suitable for tracking participation in edit-a-thons, workshops and other collaborative projects beyond the Wikipedia Education Program.

Seeking advice on possible AfC: Limb evolution

Please see my post here and let me know what you think. Do AfC require some sort of review procedure? I'd hate for them to spend a lot of time writing an article that never gets posted. Also, is it better to contact you here or through email? Biolprof (talk) 04:03, 5 February 2014 (UTC)

Deleting comments by others

Please do not simply delete talk page comments by other users, as you did at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical). Talk pages are meant to be a record of a discussion; deleting or editing legitimate comments is considered bad practice, even if you meant well. I have instead archived the section to Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive 123#Red link doesn't turn blue after redirect is created. Course page accidentally deleted

oops! In trying to edit the title and term for my course page I accidentally deleted it. But when I try to undelete it, I get this error message:

A database query error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software.

AminMDMA, I will post at WP:ENB, and someone who knows more about the software than me should help. For what it's worth, I tend to stay out of those course pages when I can. I prefer working on course pages that behave just like a Wikipedia page. I've had another class I've helped (last semester) have their course page accidentally deleted as well. Education Program technical update, February 2014

We've started working on "editor campaigns", a system that we expect will eventually be able to replace our current Education Program extension (and be useful for many other purposes as well). The early work with that project will focus on a system for signup up new editors for editing campaigns (such as courses, but also edit-a-thons, Wiki Loves Monuments, etc.). Because of that, progress will be slow on the current course page system. However, we have several improvements that should be available within the next few weeks.

Anyone can edit the main text of course pages

As part of the effort to make course pages behave more like regular wiki pages, we've enabled editing of course pages by anyone. Users who currently have the right to edit courses will have access to all the fields (so that they can change the start/end dates, and change the enrollment token). Users who currently cannot edit courses will be able to edit only the "page text" portion. This change should take effect on 2014-02-27.

Simplified course editing interface

We've considerably simplified the interface for editing course pages, removing the options to rename courses. Changing the title of a course would also move the course page, creating confusion and leading to a number of bugs. Several other parts of the course editing interface were not very useful, so we've removed them to make it easier on newcomers. This change should take effect on 2014-02-27.

Additional Notifications

Two students participating in the Facebook Open Academy mentorship program are currently working on additional Notifications for course pages. For the first of these, users will be notified whenever someone else adds them to a course.

Education Program technical update, April 2014

Since the last update, development of the editor campaigns project has been continuing, and it's almost at the point that it will be useful to users running edit-a-thons and other non-course outreach events. (If you are planning such an event soon and would like to beta test it for tracking the contributions of newcomers, get it touch.) In the meantime, we've made a few small improvements and bug fixes to the Education Program extension:

Default course end date

The default end date for courses is now approximately six months in the future, instead of immediately. This will prevent the common problem where a user creates a new course page but does change the default dates, resulting in a course that is immediately considered "ended" and thus cannot be enrolled in.

Notifications when you get added to a course

Whenever a user gets added to a course by someone else, they will now receive a Notification.

Disabling individual student profiles

The student profile special page (Special:Student/Username, not to be confused with Special:Students) is a page that lists the courses a student editor is enrolled in, and is also supposed to list the articles that user is working on. However, the list of articles can include incorrect data in cases where an instructor or volunteer assigned the articles to the student editor. These profiles are being removed from the extension altogether. This change should go into effect Thursday, May 1. (Logs are still available to find out which courses a user is enrolled in.)

Article edit notifications for students coming soon

A nearly complete patch from Facebook Open Academy student Jeff Lloyd will add a new type of Notification: students will be alerted to edits made by others to the article(s) they are assigned (as well as the corresponding talk pages). Expect to see this feature within the next several weeks.

Duplicate courses and API deletion

Bugs in the course page creation process (now fixed) led in some cases to duplicate listings for the same course at Special:Courses. This happens when the same course page had two (or more) different course ID numbers. It is possible to clean up such duplicate entries using by making calls to the API. I've documented this process and written a Python script for it.

Physiology gives us an understanding of how and why things in the field of medicine happen. Together, let us jumpstart the project and get it going. Our energy is all it needs.

Based on the long felt gap for categorization and improvization of WP:MED articles relating to the field of physiology, the new WikiProject Physiology has been created. WikiProject Physiology is still in its infancy and needs your help. On behalf of a group of editors striving to improve the quality of physiology articles here on Wikipedia, I would like to invite you to come on board and participate in the betterment of physiology related articles.   • You can tag the talk pages of relevant articles with {{WikiProject Physiology|class=|importance=}} with your assessment of the article class and importance alongwith. Please note that WP:Physiology, WP:Physio, WP:Phy can be used interchangeably.
  • You will make a big difference to the quality of information by adding reliable sources. Sourcing physiology articles is essential and makes a big difference to the quality of articles. And, while you're at it, why not use a book to source information, which can source multiple articles at once!
  • We try and use a standard way of arranging the content in each article. That layout is here. These headings let us have a standard way of presenting the information in anatomical articles, indicate what information may have been forgotten, and save angst when trying to decide how to organise an article. That said, this might not suit every article. If in doubt, be bold!
  • Why not try and strive to create a good article! Physiology related articles are often small in scope, have available sources, and only a limited amount of research available that is readily presentable!

Fraudulent Russian politician

Please take a look at the profile of Mikhail Batin. This is blatant self promotion by a Russian politician-wannabe, who spends most of his time in bars and night clubs and who’s only claim to fame is a blog with fairly radical calls for violence. Including violence in Ukraine. Both the Russian and English versions of the Wiki articles were written by the hired staff within his “foundation”. OlgaMartyniuk editor, who originally wrote the Russian version of the biography is officially employed at his “foundation”. He claims to be the director of the regenerative medicine laboratory at Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology without having a graduate degree. This is a disgrace for the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. Viktor Petrik, another disgrace to Russian science, at least knows what he is talking about when giving interviews. Hello! I am a professor at Ohio State, which does not yet have a presence on the Special: Institutions page. I wish to use Wikipedia this autumn for an evolution class and am having trouble getting started. I have my own sandbox (Antlady), and have taken the training, and used the Course Wizard. The training indicates that after using Course Wizard there is a way to add my institution. HOWEVER, when I got to the end, it dumped me into the Education noticeboard, which does not seem to have a way out.

I do not know how to get my institution listed, which is the first step. Can you help, please?!

Following Wikipedia Core Principles

Jmh649, aka James Heilman, MD, has edited this “biographical page”, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Tobinick), more than 20 times, since 2:55, 17 September 2014. His most recent edit, as of this writing, is 5:45, 18 September 2014. That is more than 20 edits in approximately 27 hours.

Jmh649 edits with a negative tone (see 5:45, 18 September 2014). He removes arguments, rather than fairly explaining both sides. He uses improper sources. He has not participated on the Talk page. He has taken an informed, well-researched biography, and reduced it to a critical, negative, one-sided, poorly sourced diatribe.

Biographies of Living Persons “must be written with the greatest care and attention to verifiability, neutrality, and avoidance of original research.” (WP:BLP) They “must not take sides, but should explain the sides, fairly and without bias. This applies to both what you say and how you say it.” (WP:NPOV) Contentious material about living persons…that is unsourced or poorly sourced…should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion.” (WP:BLP)

“Questionable sources are those that…have an apparent conflict of interest…Avoid self-published sources….” (WP:V)

Edward Tobinick and Steven Novella are opposing litigants in a current lawsuit. It is taking sides (a violation of NPOV) to use Novella’s self-published blog, specifically a webpage that directly attacks Tobinick (http://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/enbrel-for-stroke-and-alzheimers/ ), as a source in the biographical page, as Jmh649 does. Jmh649 also uses a defamatory CaseWatch page targeted at Tobinick as a source in the biographical page; it, too, is a one-sided, defamatory self-published blog, with which Novella is affiliated.

Further, the biographical page, as constructed by Jmp649, has had placed into it yet another source, an article in The Oklahoman (http://newsok.com/oklahoma-doctors-question-a-california-physicians-treatment-for-strokes/article/3576689 ) that also falsely targets Tobinick. This source is also defamatory and contains false and/or misleading statements of fact and/or opinion. It is also outdated, dating from 2011 and omits material facts; for example, it does not take mention nor take into account four randomized, double-blind clinical trials of etanercept, one for Alzheimer’s, three for neurological spine pain, that showed statistically significant clinical results in subjects who received etanercept vs. controls, all of which were completed after this source was published and have been detailed in my previous post on this Talk page. Jmh649 reverted (removed) the page edited by me that excluded this defamatory, outdated, and improper source. His improper reversion was clearly in violation of WP:BLP (Contentious material about living persons…that is unsourced or poorly sourced…should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion.” (WP:BLP))

Positive articles about the subject of the biographical page (Tobinick) from leading news sources such as the BBC, or the International Business Times, have been removed by Jmh649 from the biographical page. Likewise, he has removed nearly all of the more than 20 peer-reviewed scientific articles that were formerly mentioned, and all reports of favorable placebo-controlled randomized clinical trials from the biographical page. What is left is negative opinion, poorly sourced on self-published blogs, and outdated, defamatory news items.

What is Jmp649’s justification for removing all of Dr. Tobinick’s professional affiliations, medical board specialty certifications, and relevant professional medical presentations from his biographical page? What is Jmp649’s justification for highlighting in the biographical page the webpage of another physician (Novella) who is the subject of a lawsuit by Dr. Tobinick specifically alleging the inclusion of false and defamatory statements of fact on the very webpages that Jmp649 highlights and hyperlinks to on his altered version of the biographical page?

The biographical page, as it stands in its current revision, is not an objective article, and the biographical page as revised by Jmp649 flagrantly violates Wikipedia guidelines for composing the biography of a living person. As a veteran Wikipedia administrator, Jmh649 should know better; this is intentional and reckless behavior. This is not compatible with core Wikipedia policies, including WP:BLP, WP:NPOV, etc. For these reasons Jmh649 should refrain from any further participation on this page, and I plan to revert all of his edits and restore the version that was in place prior to his participation. During August we have translated Disease and it is now live in more than 60 different languages! To help us focus on African languages Rubric has donated a large number of articles in languages we haven't previously reached–so a shout out them, and Ian Henderson from Rubric who's joined us here at Wikipedia. We're very happy for our continued collaboration with both Rubric and Translators without Borders!

New roles and guides!

At Wikimania there were so many enthusiastic people jumping at the chance to help out the Medical Translation Project, but unfortunately not all of them knew how to get started. That is why we've been spending considerable time writing and improving guides! They are finally live, and you can find them at our home-page!

New sign up page!

We're proud to announce a new sign up page at WP:MTSIGNUP! The old page was getting cluttered and didn't allow you to speficy a role. The new page should be easier to sign up to, and easier to navigate so that we can reach you when you're needed!

Style guides for translations

Translations are of both full articles and shorter articles continues. The process where short articles are chosen for translation hasn't been fully transparent. In the coming months we hope to have a first guide, so that anyone who writes medical or health articles knows how to get their articles to a standard where they can be translated! That's why we're currently working on medical good lede criteria! The idea is to have a similar peer review process to good article nominations, but only for ledes.

New sign-up page for the Medical Translation Project

Hey!

This is a friendly reminder that the sign-up page at the Medical Translation Project (previously Translation Task force) has been updated. This means everyone has to sign up again. Using the new page it will be easier for us to get into contact with you when there is work available. Please check out our progress pages now! There might be work there already for you.

We are also very proud to introduce new roles and guides which allows people to help who don't have medical knowledge too!

Here are ways you can help!
Community organization
We need involved Wikipedians to engage the community on the different Wikipedias, and to spread the word!
Assessing content
We need language knowledgeable Wikipedians (or not yet Wikipedians) who indicate on our progress tables which articles should and should not be translated!
Translating
We are always on the look-out for dedicated translators to work with our content, especially in smaller languages!
Integration
Translated articles need to be integrated into local Wikipedias. This process is done manually, and needs to take merge or replace older articles.
Template installation
For translations to be more useful templates and modules should be installed. We need people with the technical know-how who can help out!
Programming
Several of our processes are in need of simplification and many could occur automatically with bots.

Order of operations...

Hey Biosthmors, I've noticed your discussions regarding Ebola "cases" or "outbreak" in the US, and have commented on that RM at the article Talk page. Unfortunately here's what seems to have happened: You noticed the move from to previous "cases" to "outbreak", started to question it, and then started the RM discussion requesting a move from "outbreak" to "cases". This had the effect of making the assumption that the move from "cases" to "outbreak" had consensus in the first place, and that it was the move from "outbreak" to something else that required a move discussion. In my view this wasn't the right way to look at it, it was the move to "outbreak" that requires discussion. If that RM doesn't end up with a firm consensus, it has the effect of solidifying "outbreak" as the previous consensus. What would have been better to do, and would have been the proper thing, would have been to just move it back to "cases" per WP:BRD and then start the RM discussion moving to "outbreak". Per WP:NOTBUREAU it should be possible to just do that now anyway although it'll require more explanation. Zad68 15:25, 19 October 2014 (UTC)

Hello Shiningroad. In your edit, where you said Ferringno said Cosby raped her, the headline highlights the problem. Ferrigno only said Cosby attempted sexual assault. She did not accuse him of rape. Another woman said Cosby raped her: Serignese. The article says that "Serignese ... said the now-beleaguered actor once gave her pills and raped her". I hope that helps. Best. Publications

Hi, I noticed that you have removed publications in this edit. I was wondering if you were aware that a list of publications is even present on Albert Einstein article. Or he deserves special privilege? Like even such scientists as Grigori Perelman have certain research papers published here as well as Robert Hofstadter. Hello Mishae. Other stuff will always exist, but when one looks in encyclopedias, one does not find laundry lists of publications for people. It's simply unencylopedic, in my opinion. I started the page Colin Mathers, for what it's worth. I would never include a list of his publications. I simply link to google scholar, which does. And the articles you cite all appear to use a selection critera and have short lists. The references I removed from Lainie Friedman Ross was simply a long list that dominated the layout of the article. I saw zero encyclopedic purpose. That's great. Thanks again for your contributions DavidAnstiss. I'll have to upload a picture I recently took of Iris fulva. The only other thing I'd mention about your style that I think can be improved upon is to avoid wp:citation clutter. The article I have worked on most extensively is deep vein thrombosis (keep active to prevent DVT! =) — blood flow through the calves helps prevent blood clots). You'll notice there that I never have more than two inline citations at a time. That's my preferred method. Thanks again. Your deletion of material from the lede here on the basis of your POV that it is not good for the lede is belied by wp:lede. This is perfectly appropriate for a lede. The lede serves as an introduction to the article and a summary of its most important aspects. Hello Epeefleche. Unfortunately, I made a quick scan of the article and I thought it wasn't covered in the body, thus I thought its existence in the lead violated wp:lead. I'll note your use of the words "deletion", "POV", and your tone generally, come off, to me at least, as running counter to wp:agf. Sorry I have to say that. Next time, since your quick scan missed the material that drives home the fact that it complied with wp:lede, you might consider doing a word search within the body of a material word in what you are considering moving out of the lede. What are you thinking here? You deleted clearly material information. Such as the timing of the post. And that Baghdadi is an ISIS leader. Epeefleche, I clearly didn't think it was important enough for the lead. There should have been no deletion as that is impossible from the lead. Content is in the body. The lead is a summary. What to put in the lead is an editorial decision. Unfortunately, I do not find your comments on my talk page beneficial for the project. Please refrain from ever posting here again. Thank you. I think mentioning the split, and the reason for it is good enough. What I attempted to do in my restructuring of the article is to model it on other articles of advocacy groups, both from the left and right.
