Soulslike coining
[edit]Hi! Thanks for attempting to improve the Soulslike article with your addition. However, we need reliable sources to support article content. Especially for a particularly exceptional claim like saying that you coined this popular term (which I'm not saying you didn't!), we need sources to support that, and particularly secondary sources which corroborate your assertion that you coined the term. If you can supply those so we can cite them, we might be able to restore your edit appropriately.
Setting that aside, though, while I'm not sure about the reliability of your article or the site you're writing for, even if it is, it's often considered a Conflict of interest to cite your own writing in articles, especially for any potentially controversial additions. This doesn't mean we cannot cite it, but rather than add it yourself, you should preferably submit an edit request and get consensus from uninvolved editors who may then add it for you. But even so, we still would need secondary sources that directly say that you coined the term, as to extrapolate that fact from the date of your posting would be an example of original research (we call this WP:SYNTH).
I hope this information is helpful to you. And also, welcome to Wikipedia! silvia (BlankpopsiclesilviaASHs4) (inquire within) 19:50, 10 April 2023 (UTC)
- Hey there, thanks very much for the reply. Although I have used Wikipedia many times, I have never edited before so I am definitely on the newbie side of things here, any and all info is welcome. I agree that it did feel a little weird submitting a change regarding myself but I wasn't sure how to go about it otherwise! So with this specific claim, I'm not sure that a reliable source would exist other than the article I published in 2014 in combination with the context of the time and the evolution of the genre. I can certainly submit an edit request, but not sure what sort of evidence might be acceptable for something like this which is pretty niche within the videogames world. Are there any examples that I might look at or anything within the same ballpark which might give me a direction to go in? Thanks much!! BradGallaway (talk) 21:43, 10 April 2023 (UTC)
- Off the top of my head, the one example that comes to mind is Tim Rogers, who produced a YouTube video about Tokimeki Memorial which brought it to the attention of many people who had never experienced it, as it was never officially translated to English. We were not able to mention this in either article initially, both because Rogers' video is a self-published source (generally considered unusable, with some special exceptions) and also because there was nothing to reliably prove it had any impact besides circumstantial evidence and individual opinion. Later it was mentioned in some sources that are considered to be reliable for video game articles ([1], [2]), at which point both the article on Rogers and the game could include this information-- although per our policies on neutral point of view and especially WP:ASSERT, we have to say that "Rogers is credited by games journalists [a fact] with generating greater interest for the title in the West [an opinion, at least as far as Wikipedia is concerned]".
- Similarly, if we did have a reliable source which says you coined the term Soulslike, we would likely say it something like "Brad Gallaway is credited [by whomst ever] with coining the term" or "Brad Gallaway claimed (in whatever reliable source you might've written on it) that he coined the term". The general idea is that most reliable sources have editorial boards vetting the content and its creators, so we can be reasonably sure that it's reputable, although some edge cases exist (about which many discussions have been and are had). If your website is considered reliable (again, I'm not sure about this- articles from gamecritics.com are cited in numerous existing articles, but it doesn't appear it's mentioned on the list of the WikiProject's reliable sources), then things may be as simple as you (or someone else) publishing an article on your website which says that you believe you coined the term. Although if other sources saying it that aren't written by you or your colleagues on the website exist, it would definitely help your case.
- However, I can imagine there are some editors who might take issue with it anyway for a variety of reasons, especially since the reliability of your site is uncertain. It wouldn't be up to me, we'd need to have a discussion and come to some sort of consensus about it. My suggestion would be to leave a comment on the videogames WikiProject talk page and seek the opinions of other editors who might correct me on some of this. silvia (BlankpopsiclesilviaASHs4) (inquire within) 22:06, 10 April 2023 (UTC)
- Ok, that's a lot to chew on. Thanks so much for taking the time to shed some light on this, it's very much appreciated! ^_^ BradGallaway (talk) 22:09, 10 April 2023 (UTC)
