The Reer Fiqi Yusuf clan are a major sub clan of the Qumane sub branch of the Celi clan of Marehan. They are geographically divided into 3 main areas, Jubaland, Galmudug and Ethiopia. They are a famous clan in Somalia and were well known for being a major part of Somalia's early government and had written Somalia's constitution.
The clan divides into 6 sub clans which include:
1.Reer Isaxaaq Fiqi
2.Reer Cabdiraxman Fiqi
3.Reer Ciise Fiqi
4.Reer Ibrahim Fiqi
5.Reer Xaji Fiqi
6.Reer Maxamed Fiqi
Distribution
The Fiqi Yusuf clan can be found in Galmudug in the towns of Dhusamareb, Adado, Abudwak and Dalsan. In Jubaland they can be found in Bardera ,Beled Hawo and Kismayo town. The clan can also be found in Ethiopia, in the Geladin district of Dollo Zone.
History
The Fiqi Yusuf clan are a religious clan and are well known for being scholars of the Somalis and were known to teach Islam across Somalia. Additionally, the clan had also taken part in the Adal war under Ahmed Gurey''s conquest and had in fact been so prominent that today their descendants live in Ethiopia and Somaliland due to their migrations and prominence in Adal and the fact they had lived all over the horn of Africa. The clan was all known to be a warrior sub clan of Marehan and had control over major towns and villages under the Marehan Ugaazate up until the late 1800s, were most members of the clan had migrated to Jubaland and Ethiopia. Later in history in the early 1960s, prominent politicians such as Dr Mohammed Aden Sheikh who was the first surgeon, minister of health and higher education from 1969 to the 1980s, Hussein Aw Maxamud Kooficade, former head of Somali airlines and governor of Mudug, Sheikh Cabdulle Aw Maxamud, former ambassador to Italy and member of parliament, Sheikh Maxamed Aw Maxamud, the writer of the Somali constitution and many others.
