Documentation

[edit]

@Damien.b: You seem to know something about the Bull systems. You wouldn't happen to have any documentation on them, would you? Peter Flass (talk) 03:11, 3 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I probably do. Is there something you would be interested in? Damien.b (talk) 08:15, 3 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I assume you may be in France. If you were in the US I’d suggest getting it to Bitsavers, is there a French equivalent? There is almost no information on French computing on the internet (that I could find). I’m interested in more information on the Iris 80 and Siris 8 OS. Peter Flass (talk) 13:23, 3 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Your assumption is correct. I've read your personal page (sorry mine is still blank) and we share the same interests.
Same observation as you regarding French computing, which has remained somewhat within its Francophone bubble, leading to some neglect on the English Wikipedia. I am working to address this, and I commend you for translating some articles about CII.
I'm a volunteer at the ACONIT museum and have access to a lot of old machines and documentation (currently bringing an 1130 back to life and we found out we have some exclusive doc). We're used to working with Bitsavers so those too will get uploaded once we're done scanning them. I'll see during the weekend what I can find regarding the Iris 80 and Siris. They were flagships mainframes and even I barely know anything about them, I guess almost everything got scrapped in the 80s.
There's also a need to write about the T1600 / Solar 16 minis. They were the second best selling 16 bit minis in Europe right after the PDP-11, and while they didn't give us UNIX, DECUS C or RSX-11, they gave birth to the Prolog language and were workhorses in research. Now that I'm done with the Gamma 3 I'll be working on that soon.
About the CII, this is the logo you're looking for:

I'll see if I can find something higher res.

A quick query on the museum database shows we apparently have three boxes of documentation stored in the reserve about Iris and Siris, and more in two separate items. That's great news.
I'll be digging that up this weekend and see if it's complete, but will need to make priorities as scanning them is going to take a hell of a long time.
Would you be willing to exchange through email? If so I will send you my email address.

By the way, do I have the right logo for CII at the time? Photos of the Mitra 15 seem to show a different one. Peter Flass (talk) 13:27, 3 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Damien, sorry I haven’t had a chance to get back to you. Of course I’d like to communicate. I’ve been trying to figure out how to get a private message to you. The best way is to go go my user page and there should be a link “email this user” on the left. That way I will get your email address and can reply to complete the connection.
