Copyvio

Hi, this revision looks to be a copyright violation, and is very close to this source! Also, is there a script for easier Copyvio revision deletion tagging? I hate having to manually add the templates, like this edit! Tails Wx 17:24, 20 April 2023 (UTC)

Hi Tails Wx, if you scroll down to the bottom of that source webpage, you will see that they actually copied from Wikipedia, not the other way around. You may be interested in User:Enterprisey/cv-revdel, a script that I used to use all the time which makes it really easy to request revdel (it can take a while to get used to the proper way to select revisions though, particularly if you only want to specify a single one) DanCherek (talk) 17:30, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
Oh. Well, thanks for the suggestion of that script! I've just started copyvio work, and since it makes things easier, I'll install it! Tails Wx 17:34, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
No problem! Thanks for helping out and feel free to post here if you have any additional questions in the future. DanCherek (talk) 17:35, 20 April 2023 (UTC)

Request to delete a revision

Hello. An IP editor added very offensive content in a local language in Talk:Tagalog language. I could revert it using Twinkle but the revision will still be visible in the Talk page History. Can you please delete that revision so that it is stays hidden from public view? Thank you. Sanglahi86 (talk) 20:07, 20 April 2023 (UTC)

Approve article

Hi DanCherek, I've just put an article about an kosovar professional Taekwondo athlète, but I can't publish it. Can you publish it for me ? All is done.

The draft: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Arbnor_Bajra

The article in French version (it s published): https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arbnor_Bajra

Haver a good day, Afrim J. AfrimSport1 (talk) 09:16, 19 April 2023 (UTC)

I don't have time to formally review this, but here are some recommendations for improving the draft: (1) Other Wikipedia articles should not be used as a reference because they are user-generated (in this case, able to be edited by anyone) and therefore not considered reliable; (2) please make sure the date of birth is clearly cited to a reliable source, as this is particularly important for a biography of a living person. Hope that helps! DanCherek (talk) 15:08, 19 April 2023 (UTC)
Thank you @DanCherek I will do this! AfrimSport1 (talk) 22:35, 19 April 2023 (UTC)
Hi @DanCherek
I've done what you said, how many time do you know it takes to make my article e real article and not a draft ?
And if you have time, can you tell me how I can make my article and the French version (approved: https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arbnor_Bajra) together?
Thank you!
Have a nice evening, AfrimSport1 (talk) 14:37, 21 April 2023 (UTC)
Hi, I see you have gone ahead and moved it to mainspace yourself, which is fine now that you are autoconfirmed. Best, DanCherek (talk) 13:27, 22 April 2023 (UTC)
Yes, finally I can do it, thank you very much !

Query regrading deleted page Draft:Fun88

This is regarding deleted page Draft:Fun88 where you mentioned about copyright infringement (G12: Unambiguous copyright infringement). I have fixed the issues pointed out by you. Let me know how and when can I re-submit my article? SamTRLY (talk) 11:15, 21 April 2023 (UTC)

You can re-create your draft, as long as you have summarized the information in your own words. DanCherek (talk) 13:27, 22 April 2023 (UTC)
Yes DanCherek I have done the needful. Thanks for your guidance. SamTRLY (talk) 08:36, 25 April 2023 (UTC)

PhD defense is this Wednesday, and while I'll still be in a general state of busy-ness after that, I anticipate being able to return to editing at least a little bit more! Thanks to all who have been holding down the fort in the meantime. DanCherek (talk) 01:03, 28 March 2023 (UTC)

Best of luck, Dan! Eddie891 Talk Work 01:12, 28 March 2023 (UTC)
Thanks Eddie! It's been a whirlwind of a month but I'm also excited that I'll be able to get back on here (and write about things other than science again)! DanCherek (talk) 01:15, 28 March 2023 (UTC)
Hope all went well and you are getting some (relative) rest in, to the extent it is possible... Eddie891 Talk Work 01:27, 31 March 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for checking in, it means a lot! Yep, it went well, I passed (woohoo!) and though I spent much of today finishing up a conference abstract that's due by tomorrow, I got to celebrate a bit last night and am looking forward to the weekend :) Hope all is going well with you too. DanCherek (talk) 01:31, 31 March 2023 (UTC)
Woohoo indeed, that's fantastic news! Well deserved, I'm sure. I've been well all things considered, though holding out for spring (*still*), we just had snow last night and I'm done with it. Congratulations again! Eddie891 Talk Work 01:39, 31 March 2023 (UTC)
April songs
my story today
Congratulations!! - My story today is about the Alchymic Quartet, - I went away from DYK but it's the last one from last year. - The songs are about vacation, continued. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:41, 2 April 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, interesting article! DanCherek (talk) 19:18, 2 April 2023 (UTC)
Thank you! - I made an exception from my DYK abstinence for Good Friday, - see my story today. Interesting to compare a hook 2023 style to one in 2012 (see my story today). - I sang, including chorales from Bach's greatest Passion. I recently listened to one by Homilius: a discovery! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:39, 7 April 2023 (UTC)
I loved to see Marian Anderson and her story of protest against discrimination by singing on Easter Sunday 9 April 1939 on the Main page yesterday. Impressions of Easter here and music here. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:10, 10 April 2023 (UTC)
I hope you had a happy Easter! DanCherek (talk) 18:45, 10 April 2023 (UTC)
Yes, just look at music and pics. - My story today, Messiah (Handel), was my first dip into the FA ocean, thanks to great colleagues. - a few pics added, one day missing --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:54, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
What a legendary article to take to FA. Nice work! DanCherek (talk) 02:37, 16 April 2023 (UTC)
in 2012, written by Brianboulton and Tim riley - I only took things out and added some music, He was despised. - Don't miss today's story ;) - the wife, soprano, to a FA husband, again by Tim riley. - I also updated my pics to April! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:52, 16 April 2023 (UTC)
Beautiful photos! Especially the camellias in Frankfurt. DanCherek (talk) 13:07, 16 April 2023 (UTC)
Thank you! - today's stories are about Johanna Geisler and Huub Oosterhuis, a singer and a songwriter. More here if you have time. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:32, 16 April 2023 (UTC)
and today is the 80th birthday of John Eliot Gardiner. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:51, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
I noticed the recent string of ITN/RD credits on your talk page, which is sad, but many thanks for your dedication towards writing great articles for all of these people. DanCherek (talk) 00:07, 26 April 2023 (UTC)
Thank you! Most often, I only update, sometimes one that I wrote myself, such as Martin Petzold, "on" right now. (I'm sorry that when I wrote his DYK - in 2012 - I confused him with Martin Petzoldt for the key statement, which I noticed only when writing that also ;) ) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:47, 26 April 2023 (UTC)

Request to have a look at User:Ronnie Macroni

User:Ronnie Macroni has been on an articles publishing spree for sometimes. He has published 72 articles about "battles", most of the sources he used do not even mention them as a battle and he has misinterpreted stuff like raids as battles. As you have talked to him in the past, I am requesting you to review him further, i mentioned this issue on the project page: [1], and discussed to AIV but AIV deals with simpler cases and this is a big one and so got referred me to ANI which is hectic and I don't want the trouble of, but here is the discussion per AIV: [2]. There is no historical report ever of stuff like Fourth Battle of Panipat non of the sources used within the article claim it as such and it is just one of the 72 articles he posted without any consenuss that the sources are misrepresented of and are draft content at best: [3]. I am not requesting any block or anything, he is new here but this issue is becoming problematic. His articles all draft materials at best, misrepresenting sources and just creating inaccurate articles whenever he feels like, even the sources given in the article themselves don't mention these titles nor a lot of them happening, some are even unrelate and the attitude is like "I feel like making an article, i will just add some sources that might somehow be related and will post it without consensus even if it has WP:OR contents, WP:Neutral contents, lacks WP:V and more." By that anyone can make an article whenever they want whether it is accurate or not. And this leads to a lot of mess to clean up causing unnecessary problems in Wikipedia. He also makes lots of other unsourced WP:OR edits that have bneen reverted as per his contribution history. Now Ronnie Macroni has agreed to cooperate and is new so I just want him to be more careful and accurate and credible before posting articles, just make drafts and seek consenus to be posted, and as you interacted with him in the past as per his talk page this is why i have brought the matter to you. I don't intend to take it to ANI and this is perhaps the last time I will bring it up, but as you are an experienced admin I trust your judgement and he has agreed to cooperate, I just request he is somehow convinced not to keep spamming articles whenever he feels like and he go through proper draft and consensus process and my main aim is to improve the quality of Wikipedia so that it only has accurate established articles as opposed to WP:V failing, WP:RS lacking and Wp:OR narrative concluding articles like those 72 that can be posted whenever someone feels like. Anyway I just wanted to let you know and this is probably the last time I bring it up, and as you are an admin who already interacted with him I brought it up to you, wishing you all the best and will trust and respect whatver your Judgement is, best wishes. Dilbaggg (talk) 13:13, 28 April 2023 (UTC)

Im sorry, your saying all my articles are "raids"? Ronnie Macroni (talk) 13:16, 28 April 2023 (UTC)
Ronnie Macroni I am just requesting you to make draft rather than posting articles whenever you feel like, seek proper consensus to post reliable articles, as Wikipedia is a place for posting reliable accurate articles but you have indeed added a lot of made up contents and misinterpreted sources and used titles for events which even the sources didn't claim. Also Wikipedia you should display Wp:Neutrality but you always seem to promote Sikh heroism. Anyway please stop the practice of creating articles whenever you feel like, misinterpreting the sources, using made up titles and some made up contents based on personal narratives. This is why I hope you make drafts. I know you want to cooperate and I wish you all the best, but the current way you are posting articles is leaving a lot of mess to clean up. You are spamminbg articles whenever you feel like, if that were the case we can make articles about random traffic congestions and post it but that won't make them WP:Notable., and we cvan't call traffic congestions traffic accident, we must state what the exact thing is. I won't discuss the matter further, I know you hope to be a good contributor and wish you all the best. Please be more careful and constructive in making the articles and to ensure their accuracy first make drafts and submit them for review rather than creating articles whenevr you feel like. this is for the best interest of Wikipedia. Wishing you well and probably my last discussion on this, I wil leave it to admins to decide, I only hope to maintain Wikipedia's accuracy thats all. Dilbaggg (talk) 13:44, 28 April 2023 (UTC)
Alright I understand what you mean. I'll start making drafts from now on rather than making articles straight up Ronnie Macroni (talk) 14:10, 28 April 2023 (UTC)
Seems like this is resolved for the time being, hopefully? DanCherek (talk) 22:18, 28 April 2023 (UTC)
You can have a look at my stuff to get it over with I guess. Ronnie Macroni (talk) 22:19, 28 April 2023 (UTC)
Ronnie Macroni, I don't have time to get into the weeds in a topic area that I'm not particularly familiar with or interested in, but I note that while you have not acknowledged any of the copyright warnings on your talk page, there is still close paraphrasing going on at articles such as Battle of Ramkani. For instance, you took:

A fierce battle raged from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Ramkani near Naushahra. The enemy sometimes advanced and sometimes retreated. The Maharaja had decided to fight a defensive battle. The Afghans retired in the night.

and tried to paraphrase it as:

A fierce battle raged for 12 hours at Ramkani. The enemy sometimes attacked and sometimes retired, which made the Maharaja decide to fight a defensive battle. The Afghans however finally decided to retreat during the night.

That is not okay because all you are doing is changing a few words here and there while retaining the underlying sentence structure, etc. That's called close paraphrasing, and when summarizing information from sources, it's really important to be careful about not merely superficially modifying of the source material, but rather actually writing your own summary. I sometimes find it helpful to read the source material, then try to summarize it without directly referring to it (of course you can look at it afterwards, but this might help avoid the temptation of using the same or substantially similar phrasing). Please be more careful going forward. DanCherek (talk) 22:24, 28 April 2023 (UTC)
Ok thanks for the advise I will do my best with the copyright Ronnie Macroni (talk) 22:29, 28 April 2023 (UTC)

Marwa rakha

Hello:) I am editing a page about Marwa Rakha. and users tell the resources are bad. Can you give me an example of which resources they want? This is the talk page which I talked to them: talk: Marwa Rakha--Adam Basha12 (talk) 08:58, 29 April 2023 (UTC)

Hi Adam Basha12, Wikipedia:Reliable sources has some helpful and detailed information about the kinds of sources that are desirable for Wikipedia articles. Things like personal websites and blogs are generally not useful for establishing notability. DanCherek (talk) 13:28, 29 April 2023 (UTC)

Page Review

Hello , As you Reviewed the GSLV F12 Page and Suggested to Give Attribution instead of that i have totally Changed the Context and Added some context from my own . Please Review it Again and their Error Popping up in References Section please help me to remove that Error .

Thanks. Gyaan ki gareebi (talk) 13:20, 28 April 2023 (UTC)

Hi Gyaan ki gareebi, do you see at the top of the table Launch Vehicle Stages <ref name=":0" />? The reference error is there because it doesn't know what <ref name=":0"> means; in other words, there's no citation in the article named ":0". If you replace that with the actual reference for the information in the table, that should fix it. DanCherek (talk) 22:17, 28 April 2023 (UTC)
thanks , now error has gone from the page . Gyaan ki gareebi (talk) 14:30, 29 April 2023 (UTC)

User:Abryn/Marle

With respect, as the speedy delete tag noted, User:Abryn is a former account of mine. I'm doing housekeeping. I understand to not nominate others' user pages, but being that both accounts are mine, I don't see the issue here. - Cukie Gherkin (talk) 14:22, 30 April 2023 (UTC)

Actually, the speedy deletion reason did not make it particularly clear that you were Abryn. Okay, I've reverted my decline. DanCherek (talk) 14:25, 30 April 2023 (UTC)
That's fair, apologies for being unclear. - Cukie Gherkin (talk) 14:28, 30 April 2023 (UTC)
Thanks and sorry for the confusion on my end as well. I've deleted the subpage. DanCherek (talk) 14:30, 30 April 2023 (UTC)

Question from UMStellify (18:48, 1 May 2023)

Hi DanCherek and mentor, how does one go about becoming a CVU Academy Graduate and working more in the anti-vandalism area? Your guidance will be appreciated. Thank you. --UMStellify (talk) 18:48, 1 May 2023 (UTC)

Hi UMStellify! Great question. If you are interested in going through the CVU academy, read all the information at Wikipedia:Counter-Vandalism Unit/Academy and then click on "List of available trainers", then reach out to one you're interested in who has an available student slot. I'm not too familiar with the current trainers, so I don't have a particular recommendation, but I will say that the time zone doesn't particularly matter as it is asynchronous and you never need to be online at the same time anyway. If you're looking for a more informal guide to counter-vandalism without going through the whole course, Wikipedia:Recent changes patrol is a pretty handy page with a lot of useful information. Hope that helps! DanCherek (talk) 22:08, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
Hi @DanCherek, this is helpful! Thank you so much. I'll read more about it and then reach out to one of the trainers. I've been creating new articles and doing community/task centre edits, but I think I can contribute in more ways now that I've a better understanding of Wikipedia editing. Again, thank you. UMStellify (talk) 22:56, 1 May 2023 (UTC)

Hi Dan. I was assessing Battle of Amritsar (1709) for MilHist and became a little twitchy about some close paraphrasing. See here. As you have dealt with the article's creator, Ronnie Macroni, previously, I thought that it may be helpful to draw this to your attention. Gog the Mild (talk) 21:35, 2 May 2023 (UTC)

Hi Gog the Mild, thanks for the report! I've removed the overlap that Earwig found and revdel'd; some of the rest is a little hard to check due to offline sources. DanCherek (talk) 22:46, 2 May 2023 (UTC)

How is adding additional information a "blockable disruption?" Should we ban the people who created timelines for the US President? The British Prime Minister? Etc.? It makes no sense, and who are you to determine what is and isn't a "disruption?" Literally what about it was disruptive? Nothing, that's what. You're just some boring Wikipedia editor with too much free time on his hands who let the miniscule amount of power he got on some second-rate online encyclopedia go to his head. They followed you advice and posted on the talk page. But the things they wrote:
I am the founder and the person who coined the term classical realism
It is grossly inappropriate for someone outside, and generally hostile to it, to substitute a description of his work and take for what was there.
I recently retired after 54 years as a professor and have long been recognized as a leading authority in the field
That sounds like a possible WP:COI/WP:POV problem. Nobody (talk) 06:16, 4 May 2023 (UTC)
For sure, there's a conflict-of-interest issue here, as I also elaborated on their talk page – one need only look at the first two sentences of their preferred version of the article to see it – but as long as they are sticking to the talk page, it's okay. DanCherek (talk) 13:51, 4 May 2023 (UTC)

Purnea History

Hello, I'm a scholar who want to present actual & authentic history of my district Purnea. The Wikipedia page reflects wrong history of my district. Our district has a separate glorious history from ancient Mahabharat Era to British colonial rule. Some Maithils were trying to impose their propaganda. Like somewhat China does with Tibet & other regions. DavidMishra0007 (talk) 11:11, 6 May 2023 (UTC)

Hi DavidMishra0007, the issue with many of your edits to date is that there was extensive copying from other sites such as [4], [5], and [6]. This is a violation of Wikipedia's copyright policy; anything you add to Wikipedia needs to be summarized from reliable sources in your own words. Aside from the copyright issue, there's obviously an underlying content dispute here; some of your edits were contested by others and in that case you should start a discussion on the talk page to make a case for your proposed changes. Finally, to comply with our sockpuppetry policy, please don't log out to make edits on the same articles that your account is editing, and please stick to a single account. Thanks, DanCherek (talk) 14:11, 6 May 2023 (UTC)

SolarPACES.org edits I made that you deleted - mistake?

Hello Dan,

I saw that you considered my edits to be promotional. Please consider taking a careful look and consider putting my edit back, MINUS any sentences that look at all even remotely promotional to you.

I was just trying to elaborate on what SolarPACES is, it is not a company for example as incorrectly described elsewhere in wikipedia. I write news stories for this research org and have done since 2017, paid as a contractor by the news story and interviews with their researchers.

I have never been asked OR PAID to update wikipedia. But this inside knowledge does give me insight into it. Surely Wikipedia wants expert insider knowledge too.

Not only that, every researcher at the org has not bothered to fix or update this scant page - or even the 10 year old logo here either. So, please understand it does come from any promotional motivation - rather the oposite! Neglect, its a dusty cobwebby old half done page that makes wikipedia look unprofessional (on this page!). These incorrect and incomplete facts have been ignored for over 7 years.

I saw that wikipedia said this article has insufficient links etc. and just tried remedy that today.

Nga mihi,

Susan SusanatSolarPACES (talk) 04:02, 15 May 2023 (UTC)

Hi. I see that another administrator, Deb, has since deleted the article, but I will explain my thoughts here. There were two intertwining issues at play:
  • When I said "promotional", I was referring to sentences like The TCP mechanism is a flexible and effective means for IEA member and non-member countries, businesses, industries, international organisations and non-government organisations to research breakthrough technologies, to fill existing research gaps, to build pilot plants, to carry out deployment or demonstration programmes – not only is that a straight copy from SolarPACES's own website (see the second bullet point below), it's simply not written in an encyclopedic tone. Wikipedia articles are written in a neutral manner by summarizing information from reliable, secondary sources. I have never seen an instance where text from an organization's own "About Us" page has sufficed for a Wikipedia article, simply because they're two very different styles of writing. Even if the main goal of SolarPACES isn't to sell a product, it is writing about itself in a super positive manner, while Wikipedia is primarily interested in what independent sources have to say about a subject.
  • Most of your additions were copied from SolarPACES's website, like with the example above. As the website is marked "Copyright © 2022 SolarPACES. All Rights Reserved.", there is a copyright issue here. I know you are affiliated with them, but for previously published material, we have a process detailed at WP:DONATETEXT that is needed to verify that the permissions are properly sorted. That being said, it's not worth it to go through that process since, as I mentioned above, the text is not really usable for the article itself anyway.
Even if editing Wikipedia is not part of your job description, a conflict of interest issue still exists because of your relationship with the organization. For that reason, you should read Wikipedia:Conflict of interest closely and ensure that you are familiar with Wikipedia's guidelines on this. COI editing is strongly discouraged on Wikipedia; now that the article has been deleted, if you would like to continue to edit, maybe it would be better to find some articles not related to your professional activities? DanCherek (talk) 12:25, 15 May 2023 (UTC)
I see the problem. OK, Is there a place where I can edit the page? and please show me how to make it come up for a editor review first - I hit publish on another edit, thinking the (get review) option would come up but none did. No other site describes what SolarPACES does. I am actually a contractor paid by DLR, one of the member labs in one of the member nations (Germany) to cover news at the site only. If I make a new sign in as SusanatDLR would that be better? Also I will remove text that looks promotional anyway, of course!! All the best, Susan
SusanatSolarPACES (talk) 22:22, 15 May 2023 (UTC)
Is it OK if I include a link to whatever it is that the International Energy Agency says about them as an IEA TCP? I think that needs to be clear. It is factually correct that they fund SP to "research breakthrough technologies"
But you decide.

Unable to access revisions on page history

Hi Dan! I was recommended by Adolphus79 to reach out about an inquiry I have concerning access to page revisions. It's my first time editing a Wikipedia article, so I'm still learning how to add citations, add sections in the Infobox, etcetera; please forgive my confusion.

I made four separate changes to David Maisel's (David Maisel (visual artist)) page yesterday, and apparently didn't follow Wikipedia's standards, and the changes were "Reverted" on grounds of a "possible BLP issue or vandalism". However this reason was given for only one (the first) of my revisions, not the other three that I made; in fact I don't see a reason for the others being reverted.

I'm more than happy to add or make any changes needed to meet Wikipedias standards. But I don't have access to the revisions in "Revision History". Rather than starting from zero, and trying to remember all changes that I made, can I have access to the revisions to make the necessary changes and/or citation(s)? Elliottsky (talk) 20:13, 10 May 2023 (UTC)

Hi Elliottsky, thanks for the message! Sorry about the confusion. I hid the revisions (a process called revision deletion) after Adolphus79 had already reverted the edits; the reason for the revision deletion was that those revisions contained copyright content from websites such as https://davidmaisel.com/about/. If you want a detailed explanation about revision deletion, the way it works is on individual revisions, or versions, of the article, so unfortunately any version that contains that copyright violation is hidden – in this case, that involved your first edit to the article and then every revision up to Adolphus79's revert.
I understand that this makes additional editing harder, like you mentioned (sorry!), so yes, I'm willing to email your last version of the article to you. Before I do that, please confirm that you understand the copyright issues here and that you are willing to summarize the information in your own words entirely. I'm asking only because I have sent others deleted content in the past and they simply proceeded to re-add the same text to the article, unchanged, to my dismay. When expanding articles, I sometimes find it helpful to read the source material, then try to summarize it without directly referring to it (of course you can look at it afterwards, but this might help avoid the temptation of using the same or substantially similar phrasing). Thanks, DanCherek (talk) 02:01, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for the clarification. I do understand Wikipedia's copyright TOS after reading it again thoroughly. I apologize for any hassle I may have caused on your end!
Also thank you for being willing to email me my revisions; that saves me so much time. I'll make sure to re-write everything in my original phrasing to avoid this in the future. Elliottsky (talk) 18:59, 16 May 2023 (UTC)
@Elliottsky: Yes Sent to the email address associated with your account. DanCherek (talk) 06:44, 18 May 2023 (UTC)

SolarPACES rewrite please check when published

Dan, after Deb deleted the page I rewrote the SP entry from scratch, and accidentally deleted it by switching to source code from visual editor at the end of 3 hrs as the instructions said to do. But it is a buggy site here.

Please consider my new page and give me a chance to correct mistakes by not deleting the whole thing. I don't have time to keep doing this. Please. I have work I must do. But having inadvertently caused their site to disappear, I must get something up again.

This time, I'm not risking deleting it myself. I hope you won't but can safely make it a draft for review as I couldn't SusanatSolarPACES (talk) 00:40, 17 May 2023 (UTC)

Hi Dan,
I hope you can take a look at the revised version I have managed to get up and stay visible at Draft:SolarPACES
I'm open to all changes needed!
Cheers,
Susan SusanatSolarPACES (talk) 01:54, 17 May 2023 (UTC)
Hi there. I am currently out of town with limited access to internet until next week. I see the draft has been declined; I would recommend visiting the Teahouse where experienced editors will be able to assist further with any questions you have (much faster than I can!). Question from Wickerman19 (13:46, 23 May 2023)

Hello - I'd like to make a wikipedia entry for Desser & Co, based in Manchester, it's a 104 year old company and warrants encyclopedic reference. My entries are always deleted, but how can I make an entry that isn't deleted? --Wickerman19 (talk) 13:46, 23 May 2023 (UTC)

Hi Wickerman19, can you clarify whether you have any association with Desser & Co? The previous attempts were deleted primarily because they were promotionally written. For example, sentences like Customer satisfaction is a core value for Desser & Co., and the company is committed to providing exceptional customer service. simply don't belong in Wikipedia articles. Articles are meant to summarize information that has been reported in reliable, independent sources (not what the company writes about itself). DanCherek (talk) 23:38, 23 May 2023 (UTC)

CS1 error on Bhat

Hello, I'm Qwerfjkl (bot). I have automatically detected that this edit performed by you, on the page Bhat, may have introduced referencing errors. They are as follows:

  • A "bare URL and missing title" error. References show this error when they do not have a title. Please edit the article to add the appropriate title parameter to the reference. (Fix | Ask for help)

Please check this page and fix the errors highlighted. If you think this is a false positive, you can report it to my operator. Thanks, Qwerfjkl (bot) (talk) 15:15, 26 May 2023 (UTC)

Your recent block

You just blocked User:HERACLITUS WITHOUT LOGOS as a sockpuppet and revdel'd their edit, am I right in assuming they're a sockpuppet of DeadlyRagDoll? If so, shouldn't they be indefed? Or does it need an SPI? ––FormalDude (talk) 17:03, 26 May 2023 (UTC)

Hi FormalDude. Actually nope, it was completely unrelated to the ANI section. This is a sock of someone who has been disrupting random noticeboard sections, e.g. Doersguys (talk · contribs). DanCherek (talk) 17:05, 26 May 2023 (UTC)

Hi! How do I upload an image to wikipedia and properly name it to not get a warning --Ezra119yt (talk) 15:56, 27 May 2023 (UTC)

Hi Ezra119yt, welcome to Wikipedia! There is a detailed guide at Wikipedia:Uploading images. Please keep in mind that unless you are specifically uploading a fair-use image that is the subject of commentary in an article, any images you upload need to either be in the public domain or released under a compatible license by the copyright holder. Question from BroncoBilly0502 (18:43, 28 May 2023)

Hello. I'm trying to add a death date to this page. It needs a citation. I found one, but now I'm not sure how to proceed. I seem to be in a loop. Please advise. Thanks. Tom --BroncoBilly0502 (talk) 18:43, 28 May 2023 (UTC)

@BroncoBilly0502: Hi Tom, welcome to Wikipedia. Help:Referencing for beginners is a helpful guide for how to add an inline citation to Wikipedia. May songs

May songs
my story today

I had a good story on coronation day: a Te Deum we sang that day. And the following day we sang it for the composer ;) - And today we remember a composer who created music especially for us! -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:04, 9 May 2023 (UTC)

Nice, did you ever get to work with him and/or see him in concert? DanCherek (talk) 22:28, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
Him who? Reulein? - We took part in the world premiere of his Laudato si, and he played the organ for our Monteverdi Vespers. Mawby? When he came for the premiere of the mass he had written, he stayed for a week, and we took turns entertaining him. I was the first, picking him up at the airport and taking him to Hattenheim for dinner outside overlooking the Rhine. - In the long rehearsals, he sometimes fell asleep ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:46, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
Yeah I meant Mawby! That's a great story, haha. DanCherek (talk) 22:49, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
more pleasant music (just heard!) if you click on songs - did you know a string quartet with two cellos? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:26, 14 May 2023 (UTC)
I wasn't familiar! But it did make me go look at that category on IMSLP (Arensky is there), and then also quartets with two violas too (a surprising number of them) DanCherek (talk) 12:39, 15 May 2023 (UTC)
Several of the first cat seem to be pieces, not what we expect when hearing "string quartet", several movements that is. Also to know they are there and to actually listen makes a big difference ;) - It sounds rich, and the violin stands out more. Arensky supplied both cellos with theme playing (vs. bass function). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:15, 15 May 2023 (UTC)
... and now May scenery pictured when you click on songs --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:18, 20 May 2023 (UTC)
Pentecost was full of music, and my story today is that 300 years ago today, Bach became Thomaskantor, with BWV 75, writing music history. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:37, 30 May 2023 (UTC)
A great anniversary! DanCherek (talk) 23:06, 30 May 2023 (UTC)

Question from Aaronddunne (16:00, 3 June 2023)

How do I write an article --Aaronddunne (talk) 16:00, 3 June 2023 (UTC)

Hi Aaronddunne, welcome to Wikipedia! You can read WP:YFA for a detailed guide on how to create your first article. It will take you through the steps to create a draft that can be submitted for review. Important things to keep in mind are that the article's topic should be notable. This generally means that it has already been covered in detail in good references from independent sources. If you have a connection with the subject of your draft, you will need to provide a required disclosure – see the conflict of interest guideline for more information about that. Writing an article from scratch can be really tough for new editors, so if you are finding it challenging, I would actually encourage you to edit existing articles for a while to get the hang of things. Let me know if you have additional questions or need more detailed guidance. DanCherek (talk) 16:36, 3 June 2023 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – June 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

Sandbox Page Deleted. Trying to get article page created.

Hello, I see that my submitted sandbox page was deleted for several reasons. I am wanting to get with someone and get the page structured according to wikipedias approval algorithm. If we can talk further that would be great. LoveWilliams97 (talk) 16:33, 10 June 2023 (UTC)

Hi LoveWilliams97, happy to discuss further here if you'd like. As a quick FYI, the primary reason that Draft:Love Williams was deleted was that it was promotional – Wikipedia articles should be neutrally written and based on independent secondary sources, and things like Leading a productive and impactful life is an important priority of Mr. Williams and This thinking pattern has allowed Mr. Williams to make some wise investments throughout his career as an entrepreneur and investor aren't encyclopedic. DanCherek (talk) 23:45, 10 June 2023 (UTC)

Draft Page Deleted - Henry Gradillas

Hello, I recently published a page (draft status) for Henry Gradillas. You deleted it due to copyright infringement citing his website. Well, I'm the author or this website and his website developer. We will be taking his website down permanently as he is retired and I'd like to create a Wikipedia page because he has made significant contributions to the educational system. I'm happy to provide any necessary rewrites. Also, in a few days, there will be no copyright infringement because the website will be deleted and this will be the only remaining copy to describe his life and accomplishments. Can the page be undeleted while I close his website and clean up any copyright issues? Also, I made no copy of the source code, unfortunately. I look forward to your answer. Ophioscorodon (talk) 02:05, 13 June 2023 (UTC)

Hello. There are a few different issues here. First, you should properly disclose your relationship with Henry Gradillas per Wikipedia's conflict of interest guideline — that generally means disclosing the relationship on your user page, using the {{UserboxCOI}} template. If the relationship is financial, the policies on paid editing applies as well.
Previously published content may be released by the copyright owner into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license by following the instructions at WP:DONATETEXT. In response to there will be no copyright infringement because the website will be deleted: simply deleting a website without changing the licensing does not void the previous copyright; it still would need to go through this process. I will point out, however, that Wikipedia is primarily interested in what reliable sources have to say about a particular subject, and so articles should be based on reliable, independent, secondary sources. Wikipedia would not be the right place if you are simply looking to transfer the information from his website to a permanent location (as an alternative, the Internet Archive has preserved some copies of the website for posterity).
I'm not going to restore the draft because all of the text is available at https://www.henrygradillas.com/the-author (archived) and https://www.henrygradillas.com/awards-a-nominations (archived). If you'd like, you can recreate the draft – with a proper COI disclosure, and either summarizing the information in your own words or verifiably releasing the text under a compatible copyright license. But again, it has practically no chance of being accepted if it's not built upon reliable, independent sourcing, which is particularly important for articles about living people. This typically excludes press releases, sources associated with Gradillas himself, etc. DanCherek (talk) 02:26, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for your valuable feedback. I applaud you for your thorough, thoughtful answers and the time that you volunteer to this great project. Ophioscorodon (talk) 03:07, 13 June 2023 (UTC)

Emma Njoku

hi, I removed the reference link "https://guardian.ng/news/education-primary-health-care-critical-to-sustainable-development-says-emmanuel-njoku/" which was the reason why you deleted my first submission citing copyright issues.

i have since rewrote the article removing the said reference.

why are you still deleting my article, please should check properly and allow the article for approval, thank you Ekpestar (talk) 18:29, 13 June 2023 (UTC)

@Ekpestar: The reason that your draft was deleted was not that it contained a link to the article from which you copied text. Instead, it was deleted because the entire draft largely consisted of text copied from that article, which is a violation of Wikipedia's copyright policy. On your second try, the text was still copied from that article. Anything you add to Wikipedia needs to be summarized in your own words, please. DanCherek (talk) 18:32, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
Well, I did not copy text from that article, however I will make sure I remove every similarity in my articles going forward.
Thank you Ekpestar (talk) 18:36, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
Really? I invite you to go to this CopyPatrol link and click the blue button that says "iThenticate report". The overlap between your edit and that article is highlighted in red. DanCherek (talk) 18:38, 13 June 2023 (UTC)

New Pages Patrol newsletter June 2023

Hello DanCherek,

New Page Review queue April to June 2023

Backlog

Redirect drive: In response to an unusually high redirect backlog, we held a redirect backlog drive in May. The drive completed with 23851 reviews done in total, bringing the redirect backlog to 0 (momentarily). Congratulations to Hey man im josh who led with a staggering 4316 points, followed by Meena and Greyzxq with 2868 and 2546 points respectively. See this page for more details. The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.

Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.

Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.

You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.

Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).

My deleted article

Hey I've recently worked on a wiki biography that got deleted. I was just wondering if I could get the source back, I was still working on it before it got deleted, I was gonna add the references. It was for the Draft: Pino (musician). Thanks Flpino (talk) 06:13, 18 June 2023 (UTC)

First read the guidelines on conflict of interest and writing an autobiography, and even if you want to continue with this draft, it would be in your best interest to start from scratch. It wasn't deleted because it lacked references, it was deleted becaues it was unambiguously promotional with excerpts like His music continues to resonate with audiences worldwide, serving as a testament to his artistic growth and unwavering dedication to his craft. Hello Mr,

I am kindly requesting for the restoration of my deleted article back to Draft for more working upon it. Just help me I want to fix it.

@Mat baba: Why have you made almost a thousand one-byte edits to Draft:Mirimu in the past day? DanCherek (talk) 11:37, 18 June 2023 (UTC)
Thank you Dan, I saw the. Message on my talk page. And thanks for the clear guidance you provided me earlier, I appreciate for the study moment you gave me.
Now is there a possibility for me to have back my deleted article back to Draft format, as I cleared to you in a message, I am looking forward to working upon it, I clear to you that this is going to be polished to a notable.
Thanks Regards
Looking forward to hearing from you Mat baba (talk) 14:59, 18 June 2023 (UTC)
I'm not going to restore it; the article was deleted at AfD in 2021 after this discussion, and I don't see a single source in the new draft (or in my own search) that indicates that the notability issue has been resolved. I'm willing to reconsider if you give me several examples of independent, reliable sources that provide significant coverage of Johnson, but please note that press releases, blogs, and gossip sites don't count. Alternatively, you're welcome to raise this at Wikipedia:Deletion review. DanCherek (talk) 15:07, 18 June 2023 (UTC)
Thank you Dan for the feedback.
Actually this article was deleted yesterday by you after administrator Liz tagging it with speedy deletion tag. Kindly search 18th.06.2023 or use link below (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Special:Log&logid=148287543 ) Deletion not 2021.
Kindly review that link. That's the article which was deleted.
Thank you Dan once again. Mat baba (talk) 17:37, 18 June 2023 (UTC)
Sorry for the confusion. I know I deleted it yesterday. I was just explaining why I deleted it and why I believe the subject continues to not be notable enough for an article. DanCherek (talk) 18:02, 18 June 2023 (UTC)
Okay thank you for the feedback,
You're someone amazing as in at least you reply to people's messages. Some of your fellow Administrators don't reply, they don't even bother about providing solutions to people's messages but rather deleting only I don't know why they prefer deleting than helping and solutions.
Otherwise thank you for your co-operations I've really liked your conversation seriously.
Question: is okay to Draft a new Draft page if I come to get good recommendable references for the musician? Thanks Mat baba (talk) 20:01, 18 June 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the kind words. I would not recommend recreating the draft unless and until there are appropriate sources with significant coverage of him. More information about what constitutes a good source can be found at WP:RS. Any future drafts are still subject to the speedy deletion criteria, so if it's too promotional it could get tagged and deleted again. DanCherek (talk) 20:06, 18 June 2023 (UTC)

Glitch

Hello, DanCherek,

I see you did a Merge with Draft:J-Boog. Unfortunately, even though it's a redirect, the page is showing up in Category:Candidates for speedy deletion as abandoned drafts or AfC submissions. But there are no category tags on the redirect that might be removed. Any ideas how to remove this page from this CSD category? Maybe it should be deleted and then restored but not being adept at merging, I'm not sure what the protocol is on retaining the original page. Thanks for any help you can offer. Liz Read! Talk! 02:38, 21 June 2023 (UTC)

Hi Liz, I just performed a null edit on Draft:J-Boog and it looks like the category has now been emptied? Thanks for flagging this. DanCherek (talk) 02:41, 21 June 2023 (UTC)

The Core Contest winners announced

The winners of the 2023 The Core Contest are announced 🎉. We had an amazing set of improvements this year, and the judges (Femke, Aza24 and Casliber) would like to thank everybody who joined and congratulate the winners.

  • First place goes to Buidhe for improving The Holocaust; very core, highly relevant; their work on bringing geographical balance to the article puts the topic in a whole different light. We also commend improvements to sourcing and prose

Hi Let me know if you have any questions about editing Wikipedia. DanCherek (talk) 17:24, 23 June 2023 (UTC)

I never even thought to check if those edits were copyright! Sorry about that. It's kind of obvious thinking about it that it was a copy. I would have reported it otherwise. Thanks for clearing it all up. Knitsey (talk) 15:37, 24 June 2023 (UTC)

Hi! No worries. I came across it because the copyright bot flagged it as a potential violation. Thanks for your vigilance at that article. DanCherek (talk) 16:00, 24 June 2023 (UTC)

Question from Charlocornell (14:55, 29 June 2023)

Hi Dan. I've made a real mess of my first edit. I'm trying to put in the following detail about the English part of the Via Francigena page. Can you help:

Modern pilgrims from England would follow Sigeric's route in the reverse order, and so would set off from the zero mile stone in the South Porch of Canterbury Cathedral. Pilgrim passports are available from The Beaney museum in Canterbury or from information office of the Cathedral. Canons based at Canterbury Cathedral can also be arranged to offer blessings to pilgrims setting off on the journey [1]. Modern pilgrims would then follow the route, picking up the first stamp in their pilgrim passport at to the village church of St. Mary's in Patrixbourne. It is possible to "Champ" and stay by arrangement at St. Mary's [2]. Heading on towards the English coast, pilgrims would travel through the Kentish villages of Womenswold and Woolage Green before arriving in [Shepherdswell]] which is the end of the first stage (of 79 stages). The second stage continues to Dover via the Waldershare Park Estate and then joining the old Roman Road at Studdal outside Dover, to walk into the town. Pilgrims then cross the Channel to Sumeran (now called Sombres), landing at the village of Wissant.

[Then continues as per the existing article] --Charlocornell (talk) 14:55, 29 June 2023 (UTC)

References

Hi Charlocornell, welcome to Wikipedia! I've fixed it in this edit – basically, the issue is that references should be closed with </ref>, rather than /<ref>. (So like <ref>[Reference details here]</ref>. The RefToolbar might be helpful for auto-formatting citations; I use it all the time. Hope that helps! DanCherek (talk) 15:00, 29 June 2023 (UTC)

Experienced user

Hello. I am an experienced user but I dont have total 500 edit on English Wikipedia now. I cant edit some pages right now. Do you can give me this right? Thanks. Gadir (talk) 02:56, 30 June 2023 (UTC)

Hi Gadir, hope you're doing well. I know you have extensive experience on other projects, but the extended confirmed permission is almost never granted manually (i.e., before 30 days and 500 edits). That's because the community has typically felt that it's important for editors to get enough experience with policies and guidelines on the English Wikipedia, specifically, prior to editing these articles which are usually contentious. Usually the only reason that extended confirmed would be manually added would be to a legitimate alternate account of a user who already meets the requirements on their main account. So sorry, but feel free to make talk page edit requests in the meantime, using the {{Edit extended-protected}} template, and hopefully it shouldn't be too long until you meet the requirements. (I'll note that you're welcome to make the request at Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Extended confirmed but I'm pretty sure you're going to get a similar reply from the responding administrator.) Any chance of extending the range blocks and cutting off account creation? Beyond My Ken (talk) 04:38, 3 July 2023 (UTC)

Is this about Sunnyonce (talk · contribs) or something else? So far I have been semi-protecting pages and placing some rangeblocks if they aren't too large (e.g., 125.208.192.0/22), but I'm reluctant to hardblock an IP because I'm not that familiar with ranges, etc. to know when it might be appropriate versus excessive. So if you have a specific suggestion, a more experienced admin or a checkuser would be good to ask. DanCherek (talk) 12:28, 3 July 2023 (UTC)

Gaylor (fan theory)

Hello I was about to respond to a comment when my page was deleted. My response about lack of updating of the page was:

Critiques:

“Simply is not notable enough for its own mainspace article.” There is clearly several in depth notable sources cited for this article.

“The only good sources per the bot are Buzzfeed and People mag. Rest are iffy or not useable.” Salon, Rolling Stone, Sydney Morning Herald, not useable???

“These 'theories' are mostly gossip and there is no tangible proof. There have been multiple videos of the alleged kissgate incident. One in particular does not show a kiss, but could show Karlie Kloss kissing Josh Kushner just before he was believed to have left the concert.” Seems very much to be about whether OP believes in the theory vs the fact that there is a noteable fan theory out there, whether or not it is true or can be proven.

“Being cited, but without proof from the artist's PR or management or from the artist herself.” Once again, this is a reaction to the theory, not an opinion on the quality of article.

“ undue collection of "evidence" that someone's sexuality is different from what they have declared, which disturbs me on a personal level” again on the subject and not on the article.

” It's nearly an endorsement of pathological obsession” again this is not helpful feedback, it’s what someone thinks of the subject

” perhaps the article should be renamed Gaylor (fan theory) “ noted and applied this feedback

it’s honestly unfair that the deletion occurred without the opportunity for me to talk about how I updated the page and how much of a lack of constructive feedback was given initially for me to overhaul the whole thing Elttaruuu (talk) 21:59, 3 July 2023 (UTC)

I can appreciate why it looks like nothing was changed from the page but it was updated: the disambiguation, the inclusion of more sources and more context, the shifting of the language to be about a fan theory rather than a group. This does not seem to be grounds for a second deletion without a conversation Elttaruuu (talk) 22:01, 3 July 2023 (UTC)
Alright I’m feeling slightly calmer and would like to know straight up—is this considered a copyright issue of copyrighting my own page? Do I need to rewrite the thing from scratch because of this? Elttaruuu (talk) 22:09, 3 July 2023 (UTC)
Hi Elttaruuu, I'm sorry that this left you feeling initially distressed. I know you are approaching this topic with good faith and I hope this is not too discouraging. Just wanted to note that I've seen this and will draft a reply here (will post soon) that will hopefully be a detailed explanation of my decision with potential next steps. DanCherek (talk) 22:14, 3 July 2023 (UTC)
Thank you, I appreciate the affirmation, clarification, and assistance. Elttaruuu (talk) 22:21, 3 July 2023 (UTC)
@Elttaruuu: So, the new article was tagged under the G4 speedy deletion criterion, which "applies to sufficiently identical copies, having any title, of a page deleted via its most recent deletion discussion" (emphasis is mine). I assessed the similarity between the two versions by comparing Gaylor (fan theory) with the last revision of Gaylors prior to deletion and I did find it to be substantially similar, even after noting the main updates (different page title, a revised lead to accommodate the new title, and minor copyedits to the other sections). Copy-and-pasting a lengthy deleted article with minor tweaks is almost never a good idea.
Specifically, I did not find the minor differences between the two versions to be enough to overcome the consensus reached at the deletion discussion. If all that was needed to resolve the concerns raised at the AFD was to rename the article – which was explicitly suggested by one of the !voters, as I'm sure you know – that would probably have happened (because that can be a valid outcome of a deletion discussion). Disagreeing with many of the comments at the AFD, regardless of validity of those comments, doesn't mean that the original content can just be largely restored. While I know you were trying to follow Hameltion's suggestion (and Explicit's feedback) by renaming the page to be about the fan theory rather than the group, the near-identicalness of the two versions kinda undermined that approach.
Okay, as promised, I'll give my thoughts on how we could move forward from here. Three options come to mind:
  1. Move on to other topics. Not trying to be blasé, as I know this is something you've put a lot of time and effort into, but the existence of the AFD means that it will continue to be an uphill battle to get this article into mainspace, regardless of how fair that seems.
  2. If you disagree with my decision to delete Gaylor (fan theory), you can ask for the community to review it at deletion review, where they will endorse the deletion, overturn it, or possibly send the new version to AFD again for a new discussion.
  3. If you still think focusing the article on the fan theory, rather than the group, is a promising approach for resolving the AFD concerns, create a draft for evaluation at AFC – but this time around, don't copy and paste the contents of Gaylors as a starting point. It's tempting, but it will make it much more likely that the new version will continue to resemble the old one substantially. Instead, treat it like a fresh start, a way to radically re-approach the topic in a new way that addresses the previous critiques, rather than simply adding a sentence here or there. If a new draft is rewritten from scratch, I'd be happy to add a note on the talk page and/or as an AFC comment that the new draft is sufficiently different from the deleted version and should be assessed on its own merits.
Thanks for reading all the way to the end. I hope this is at least somewhat helpful, and again, my apologies if the deletion caused you stress. Happy to discuss further if you'd like. DanCherek (talk) 23:05, 3 July 2023 (UTC)
Thank you. I sincerely appreciate the kindness and detail you put into this topic and will weigh the options you set forth before proceeding. This topic is met with a very scary and intense amount of homophobia in non-wiki spaces online, which is exhausting, so again, thank you for the feedback and the assurance that you know I am trying to do the right thing for the project and just need clearer guidance. Elttaruuu (talk) 23:23, 3 July 2023 (UTC)
Sure thing! DanCherek (talk) 23:40, 3 July 2023 (UTC)
Comment: It seems to me that the issues brought up during the deletion discussion were mostly fixed. In particular, notability was a concern during the discussion, and the situation has changed substantially with regards to that aspect. On the other hand, I don't have access to deletion logs, so I can't compare the two versions directly. To be clear, the article was not in great shape, and I don't think it should have been published without significant changes; I started to work on it when it was still an AfC submission. But I think there was enough for an encyclopedic article. Actualcpscm (talk) 09:36, 4 July 2023 (UTC)
As I alluded to above, the new page was almost entirely a word-for-word copy of the deleted one when you came across it. I appreciate your attempts at copyediting, but if there's enough for an encyclopedic article, the way to do that is not to simply copy-and-paste the deleted one under a new title. DanCherek (talk) 15:34, 4 July 2023 (UTC)

Haven't looked into this extensively so I'll just note that the partial rangeblock of 178.222.0.0/16 is intentionally broad because the block is only from two pages and therefore not that impactful. A /16 IPv4 rangeblock covers about 65,000 addresses and obviously not all of those are Vujkovica brdo. So it would be better to file a new report, with detailed evidence, at the SPI case page if you think it is block evasion so that it can be evaluated by an experienced clerk there. SR3 Vikhr

Hello DanCherek! Regarding my addtions towards the SR-3 Vikhr that contained copyrighted content from (https://sadefensejournal.com/the-9x39mm-sr-3-vikhr-russian-compact-assault-rifle-easily-handles-subsonic-ammunition/), will I be able to readd the paragraph via direct quotation? Is it possible to get a copy of the old version of the article with my edit?

However in regards to (https://modernfirearms.net/en/assault-rifles/russia-assault-rifles/sr-3-sr-3m-vihr-eng/), it was added by another editor and was already existing on the article prior to my edit. JTC22 (talk) 03:30, 5 July 2023 (UTC)

Hi JTC22! Yep, understood that the modernfirearms copying was introduced by someone else, I just decided to remove both at the same time when I noticed it So, direct quotations can be useful but they should be used sparingly, for two main reasons: (1) if the source is non-free (i.e., not in the public domain nor under a suitably free license), then the quote is subject to the non-free content guideline, which says that it should be brief and used only where a summary in your own words couldn't illustrate the same point, and (2) excessively lengthy quotations are not very reader-friendly. So my recommendation in this case would be to try to summarize the information in your own words, and if you need to add a quote, don't make it too long.
I've emailed the source text of your last revision to your Wikipedia email. Just a reminder that the multiple instances of copied text in that email shouldn't be readded to the article. Hope that helps. DanCherek (talk) 03:42, 5 July 2023 (UTC)

Seeking advice for the page I'm editing

Heya! You helped me with the Clay Kids page earlier. I wanted to ask if my new episode summaries are suitable or whether I should just remove it all. Also, the second refrence link doesn't work anymore, what should I do? Thanks so much. - DaClayCrew (talk) 08:01, 9 July 2023 (UTC)

Hi DaClayCrew, those new episode summaries look much better to me from a copyright perspective. Thanks for taking the time to rewrite them in your own words! To answer your second question, when a website is dead, it can help to see if there's an archived version on the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine at http://web.archive.org/. In this case it did save a copy of that website here, so I have added the archived link in this edit. Another way to do this automatically is to go to the page history (Special:PageHistory/Clay Kids), then click "Fix dead links", and follow the instructions from there. DanCherek (talk) 15:02, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
Thank you so much! You've really helped - DaClayCrew (talk) 15:41, 9 July 2023 (UTC)

Hello DabCherek, I am sorry, I didn't know what exactly constituted copyright violation. I thought i could upload content from a website and use their link as a reference. Now as u removed my content from the pages i updated eaarlier, i got to know that i can use information from a website, but have to write that in my own words. Thank you. Ummertheone (talk) 17:22, 9 July 2023 (UTC)

Hi, no problem. Thanks for your understanding! DanCherek (talk) 17:24, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
Also tell me if i can use information from any website, and write that in my own words to update Wikipedia and use that website as a reference ? Ummertheone (talk) 17:25, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
It's important to assess the reliability of a source before using it, because Wikipedia articles should primarily be built upon reliable sources. For example, a random person's blog, or another Wikipedia article, would generally not be considered a reliable source when you are introducing new information to an article. See Wikipedia:Reliable sources for a detailed overview of this guideline and ways to determine a source's reliability. DanCherek (talk) 17:27, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
Thank you DanCherek. Please check the following edit that I just made, and see if it can be kept on the page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indira_Gandhi_Memorial_Tulip_Garden Ummertheone (talk) 17:54, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
I've trimmed it as parts of it were pretty promotional; it's better to just focus on the facts rather than how beautiful the garden is or how impressive the number of visitors is. DanCherek (talk) 18:00, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
Thank you so much DanCherek. I would consider your advice for future edits. 27.63.25.1 (talk) 18:08, 9 July 2023 (UTC)

Of these user groups (file and page mover) in separately I saw there were request pages but I dont remember now. Gadir (talk) 18:10, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
@Gadir: If someone who isn't a file mover wants to rename a file, they should place {{rename media}} on the image description page, which will put the page into Category:Wikipedia files requiring renaming. If someone who isn't a page mover wants to move a page but is unable to do so due to a redirect, etc., they should request it at Wikipedia:Requested moves/Technical requests if it's uncontroversial, or start a requested move discussion otherwise. DanCherek (talk) 18:13, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
If I do not remember wrong what I am looking for is a page like this and it depends on the user groups I am talking about. Maybe it is removed. Gadir (talk) 18:18, 9 July 2023 (UTC)

Article with copyvio and looking for advice

Hi DanCherek! I’ve reached out to you before, and since you are so knowledgeable and helpful regarding copyvios, I thought I’d reach out to you again for some help and guidance. I was patrolling recent changes, and I recently saw that someone removed material from the article "Tooth Pari: When Love Bites". The IP that removed the writing noted the URLs where the material was from, and it does appear to be a clear copyvio issue (so, on a side note, I think those revisions should probably be eligible for revdel). I attempted to rewrite the information and then ran the rewritten version through Earwig's Copyvio Detector and got an 18.0% similarity with "violation unlikely", but since I am new to this area, I wanted to make sure it was okay. Here is the diff between the original (with copyvio) and mine: [7]. Thanks for any guidance and/or advice, and I apologize ahead of time if my rewrites are still a copyvio. Thanks again! Wikipedialuva (talk) 08:20, 10 July 2023 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for asking. My opinion is that it is still too similar to the original. Unfortunately this can be a pretty common issue anytime you start with a copyright plot summary and base your rewrite off of that – you can end up with close paraphrasing (click that link to read more), which is where some words here and there are changed but the underlying sentence structure, etc. is retained. Take Episode 8, for example: Rumi is given a painful ultimatum: go after Luna or lose Roy forever. A character from Luna's past reappears in her life. versus Rumi is faced with a devastating ultimatum — go after Luna, or lose Roy forever. A figure from Luna's past returns to her life. Earwig's tool is really good at assessing word-for-word copying but far less effective for close paraphrasing. My recommendation is to (1) ditch the Netflix summaries as a starting point; (2) go and watch the episodes, if you have not already done so; and (3) after watching, summarize each one without looking at what Netflix said. DanCherek (talk) 13:25, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
Thanks so much for helping me better understand the close paraphrasing policy and giving me an example. I went ahead and removed the episode summaries from the article. Thanks again! Wikipedialuva (talk) 00:07, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
No problem and thanks for your understanding. Happy editing! DanCherek (talk) 01:05, 11 July 2023 (UTC)

That's a lot of biographies created in the effort to close the gender gap. Happy 8th Anniversary! Re-submission of the Page

HI, Thank you for your review. I have tried to take on board your recommendations and have created a new article accordingly. I was wondering if I could recreate a page similar to the previously deleted page. Prior to re-submitting I wonder if you would be kind enough to have a look and see if I have understood and followed those recommendations. I would also be grateful for any specific feedback that you may have that would ease the re-submission process. Many Thanks, Quillmedia Quillmedia (talk) 06:59, 20 July 2023 (UTC)

Hi there. User:Quillmedia/sandbox was deleted because it was extremely promotional and also copied from https://www.sfhft.org/directory2018/ or elsewhere. Before trying again, I would challenge you to first identify multiple reliable sources that contain significant coverage of the subject. I mention this because I did a quick Google search myself and I'm not sure he meets the threshold for notability that would merit an article. If you decide to create another draft, please keep it neutral and don't copy any text from elsewhere. DanCherek (talk) 01:39, 21 July 2023 (UTC)

Your 'protection' of the article of the Nazi Himmler

Hi, I'm currently learning about how Nazism survived in Germany after WW2, via information about groups like the Gehlen Organisation, BND, and their various Nazi & SS members. One of those people is the Nazi Gudrun Burwitz. I've already come across multiple sources which support edits that you reverted, before protecting the article about her. May I ask why you are deleting uncontroversial references to her support of Nazi organisations? 122.150.92.52 (talk) 03:38, 15 July 2023 (UTC)

I made a single revert at that article – this one – and in that edit, no references were removed, nor any information about support of Nazi organizations. This is the only thing I changed:
{{Short description|Daughter of Heinrich Himmler}}
+
{{Short description|German Nazi Party supporter (née Himmler, 1929–2018)}}
So I think you've got the wrong person. You are correct that I semi-protected the article, due to persistent sockpuppetry (i.e., another editor kept evading their block to edit that article). DanCherek (talk) 03:48, 15 July 2023 (UTC)
I don't have the wrong person. As you said; you protected the article, and changed a reference to this individual as a Nazi. I did not mean reference == source. I meant a reference within the article. Is this an edit by the person you say is doing sockpuppetry? What is the objection to this fairly uncontroversial description of this Nazi? 122.150.92.52 (talk) 06:20, 15 July 2023 (UTC)
Again, you are mistaken. I re-added the part of the short description that describes Burwitz as a "German Nazi Party supporter". In other words, another person (IP editor 125.208.209.48, who is a blocked user) changed the description from "German Nazi Party supporter" to "Daughter of Heinrich Himmler". I reverted their edit, thus restoring the Nazi Party supporter description. The blue highlight above is what I added to the article. DanCherek (talk) 11:12, 15 July 2023 (UTC)
Ok. Sorry about the confusion and the waste of time. 122.150.92.52 (talk) 10:47, 22 July 2023 (UTC)

Hi! How's it going? I recently discovered a page I created for my talent got taken down by you, reason being that it was created by a banned account. I'm trying to get this page back up. How do I go about this?

PS. I had someone create it for me Ibkademoye (talk) 00:18, 29 July 2023 (UTC)

What's the page? DanCherek (talk) 02:10, 29 July 2023 (UTC)

June songs

I like today's Main page, and here's why ;) - (DYK that we got filmed when performing the piece mentioned) -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:57, 2 June 2023 (UTC)

Happy June! Yes it's a great Main Page, I very much enjoyed reading these articles and Aza24's too! DanCherek (talk) 22:51, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
Great to hear! Urgh that list took so long... I wanted to do similar ones for Mozart and Bach too but don't know if I have the same motivation left in me for that! Aza24 (talk) 02:43, 3 June 2023 (UTC)
"Two-headed Beethoven statue causes controversy" is a great headline. Anyway, it's very impressive. Personally I've no idea how I would get a list like that even halfway to a decently comprehensive state! DanCherek (talk) 03:03, 3 June 2023 (UTC)
Last weekend was nice, class reunion a funny number of years after completing school, and the lovely park where I spent many Sundays as a child. Today's story is quite dramatic, there's a yt trailer to the hook. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:55, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
11 June or: Music not only by Bach --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:12, 12 June 2023 (UTC)
Symphonie espagnole!!!! 😊 DanCherek (talk) 21:20, 12 June 2023 (UTC)
si! - but before, Abel festival, in Köthen! - Jörg Widmann is 50 today, and I began Stockholm pics. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:03, 19 June 2023 (UTC)
Today's story is about a singer whom I saw twice, not Wagner and Strauss, but Bach and Weill - more vacation pics! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:06, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
Today, the story is ten years old, the Main page had three great people who recently died, and I invite you to look at two videos around concerts I heard, in the short one actually seen in the background, and the long one has the espagnole with a brilliant newcomer. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:36, 25 June 2023 (UTC)
Today: a woman caught by the iron curtain (improved with SusunW and GRuban), yesterday: the Mass in B minor, heard in concert then, three musical videos are out, and the rest of the vacation pics is now there. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:49, 29 June 2023 (UTC)
Thanks! Mass settings are fascinating to me but I'm not very familiar with them (even many of the well known ones) so I always enjoy reading great articles about them. DanCherek (talk) 13:35, 29 June 2023 (UTC)
The B minor is the ultimate setting, - too long to be used in a service, - heavenly dimensions. The first Kyrie eleison (2 words!) takes 7 minutes with a fast conductor. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:29, 6 July 2023 (UTC)

July music

July songs
my story today

My story today pictures a friend whose birthday is today ;) - we listened to music she helped publishing - at a fancy place (which looked different when Bach played there). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:30, 6 July 2023 (UTC)

Happy birthday to them! It's cool to be in a place where there's so many hundreds of years of history. I felt similarly when I was exploring Italy last year. (Particularly cool is when you look at a painting from, say, the Renaissance and you see the same building that's still standing today.) DanCherek (talk) 14:48, 7 July 2023 (UTC)
Finally: June pictures updated, with three great RMF concerts! - She played for us at her party (Saturday), on four instruments including baryton, with family members and colleagues, from Renaissance to Haydn. - My story today is very personal: the DYK appeared on Wikipedia's 15th birthday, and describes a concert I sang. I was requested to translate the bio into German for a memorial concert ... - see background, and we talked about life and death. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:30, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
That's cool, I'd never heard of a baryton before. What were some of the Renaissance pieces? Are you going to go to all of the RMF concerts through September? DanCherek (talk) 23:58, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
There was one Renaissance piece, but only spoken announcements. I can ask if details are essential. Understood Schulze, played by recorder, violin, viola da gamba and cello. Next was Abel, gamba and cello, specified for that! Then Telemann trio sonata, Handel trio sonata, Haydn baryton trio (he wrote more than 100 for his boss, with viola and cello), and - almost a world premiere - an arrangement of 3 of Mendelssohn's Lieder ohne Worte for viola and cello, arranged by the cellist, and played first that same day for another birthday ;) - I plan to go to the RMF concerts listed, not 'all' which is now impossible. When it started Mr. Herrmann went to all. It's now 164, and some at the same time. He has been seen for the first half of one and the second half of another. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:04, 13 July 2023 (UTC)
Nah, was just curious! I hope you enjoy the concerts. DanCherek (talk) 13:22, 13 July 2023 (UTC)
One tonight, Herreweghe and Spanish Renaissance music. Last I heard them was the Monteverdi Vespers, and I was surprised how little he let the choir do. Many things we sang were done by the soloists. I met the person who trains the choir, DYK? He trained the church musicians of the Diocese of Limburg on some Saturday, and they had too few women to form a choir, just men such as Gabriel Dessauer and Peter Reulein, and I volunteered. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:02, 13 July 2023 (UTC)
Fireworks on the Rhine pictured on 1 July, but the real stars were sun and moon. I love today's story. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:56, 15 July 2023 (UTC)
On today's Main page, you can find a cantata that Bach first performed 300 years ago, and an iconic saxophonist from East Germany. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:59, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
👍 Like and late reply, but the fireworks pictures are great, and "Rhein in Flammen" is the coolest name ever. DanCherek (talk) 23:06, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
Hope you also like Weimar! - While today's DYK highlights Santiago on his day, I did my modest share with my story today, describing what I just experienced, pictured. I began the article of the woman in green. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:28, 25 July 2023 (UTC)
Today Jahrhundertring, and I just listened to Götterdämmerung from the Bayreuth Festival (pictured), - the image (of a woman who can't believe what she has to see) features also on the article talk. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:22, 31 July 2023 (UTC)

Hello. There are a few different issues here. First, it sounds like you have been in contact with Arefa Tehsin regarding use of text on their website. You should properly disclose your relationship with Tehsin per Wikipedia's conflict of interest guideline — that generally means disclosing the relationship on your user page, using the {{UserboxCOI}} template. If the relationship is financial, the policies on paid editing applies as well.
Previously published content may be released by the copyright owner into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license by following the instructions at WP:DONATETEXT. I will point out, however, that Wikipedia is primarily interested in what reliable sources have to say about a particular subject, and so articles should be based on reliable, independent, secondary sources. An article is unlikely to remain on Wikipedia if it's not built upon reliable, independent sourcing, which is particularly important for articles about living people. This typically excludes press releases, sources associated with Tehsin himself, etc. DanCherek (talk) 19:18, 3 August 2023 (UTC)

Hi APOWeekie, I'm not quite sure. It would be helpful if you could provide some more information about the specific change you were trying to make when this error occurred, as well as the internet browser that you're using. Or, try implementing the change again, and see if you consistently encounter it. DanCherek (talk) 19:29, 3 August 2023 (UTC)
