Administrators' newsletter – July 2020
News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2020).
- A request for comment is in progress to remove the T2 (template that misrepresents established policy) speedy deletion criterion.
- Protection templates on mainspace pages are now automatically added by User:MusikBot II (BRFA).
- Following the banning of an editor by the WMF last year, the Arbitration Committee resolved to hold an
RfC regarding on-wiki harassment
. The RfC has been posted at Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee/Anti-harassment RfC and is open to comments from the community. - The Medicine case was closed, with a remedy authorizing standard discretionary sanctions for
all discussions about pharmaceutical drug prices and pricing and for edits adding, changing, or removing pharmaceutical drug prices or pricing from articles
.
- Following the banning of an editor by the WMF last year, the Arbitration Committee resolved to hold an
WikiCup 2020 July newsletter
The third round of the 2020 WikiCup has now come to an end. The 16 users who made it into the fourth round each had at least 353 points (compared to 68 in 2019). It was a highly competitive round, and a number of contestants were eliminated who would have moved on in earlier years. Our top scorers in round 3 were:
- Epicgenius, with one featured article, 28 good articles and 17 DYKs, amassing 1836 points
- The Rambling Man , with 1672 points gained from four featured articles and seventeen good articles, plus reviews of a large number of FACs and GAs
- Gog the Mild, a first time contestant, with 1540 points, a tally built largely on 4 featured articles and related bonus points.
Between them, contestants managed 14 featured articles, 9 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 152 good articles, 136 DYK entries, 55 ITN entries, 65 featured article candidate reviews and 221 good article reviews. Additionally, MPJ-DK added 3 items to featured topics and 44 to good topics. Over the course of the competition, contestants have completed 710 good article reviews, in comparison to 387 good articles submitted for review and promoted. These large numbers are probably linked to a GAN backlog drive in April and May, and the changed patterns of editing during the COVID-19 pandemic. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Parentheses
I have no idea why you are making edits like this one, but they have no effect on the appearance of the article from the reader end, and they make it very slightly harder to see what's going on in an equation at the editor end. Please stop. --JBL (talk) 22:33, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
- Sorry about that. I've set it so that it ignores the content of the `math` tags; outside of those, it does have an affect, but I didn't meant to be editing inside of those DannyS712 (talk) 23:38, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
- Oh, I see -- I should have had a look at your contributions to understand what was going on. Yes, absolutely, that sounds like a great solution. Thanks! --JBL (talk) 23:41, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
Your GA nomination of Chafin v. Chafin
Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Chafin v. Chafin you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Your GA nomination of Chafin v. Chafin
The article Chafin v. Chafin you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Chafin v. Chafin for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On This Day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. Bot approves self-redirects
I was surprised that there is now a bot approving redirects and I tried to figure out what causes the bot to do so. In that process I realized that I made a self-redirect by accident. Technically such a self-redirect fits the tasks of the bot, but I guess these shouldn't be approved automatically. --mfb (talk) 11:41, 4 July 2020 (UTC)
- Hmm, will try to figure that one out - its unlikely to come up, and left redirects are patrolled and fixed, but makes sense to skip them. Thanks for letting me know DannyS712 (talk) 11:43, 4 July 2020 (UTC)
FYI
Hi Danny, I noticed your RemindMe script and was wondering if you were aware of the (far too useful for it to be this obscure) W-ping script, which does the same thing without making the notifications being public or adding more revisions to the database. Is that a design that you would consider as an update, or would you be willing to also link to the W-ping script on your page as a "see also"? Best, Kevin (alt of L235 · t · c) 19:41, 5 July 2020 (UTC)
- W-ping is good, but it has a few disadvantages compared to the bot (as well as the advantages you mentioned) - the bot edits on your user talk page can trigger emails, and show up using my global watchlist script when viewing from other wikis. DannyS712 (talk) 19:45, 5 July 2020 (UTC)

Problems
- The Score extension has been disabled for now. This is because of a security issue. It will work again as soon as the security issue has been fixed. [1]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 7 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 8 July. It will be on all wikis from 9 July (calendar).
Future changes
- Abstract Wikipedia is a new Wikimedia project. It will collect language-independent information that can be easily read in different languages. It builds on Wikidata. The name is preliminary. You can read more. [2]
- The iOS Wikipedia app developers are thinking about new experimental tools. If you use an iPhone you can help them by answering the survey.
- Some rules for user signatures will soon be enforced. Lint errors and invalid HTML will no longer be allowed in user signatures. Nested substitution will not be allowed. A link to your user page, user talk page or user contributions will be required. You can check if your signature works with the new rules. This is because the signatures can cause problems for tools or other text on the page.

Enslin (entomologist)
I wrote this article which relates to a very notable entomologist as a stub. It was redirected (almost immediately) before completion. I explained this to whoever made the move suggesting a better title would be Eduard Enslin as in the authority controlled German language version. Also I worked on the draft adding a sentence or two and completing the references one of which is a very complete pdf with a full bibliography. So far with no response.Notafly (talk) 16:03, 7 July 2020 (UTC) PS It is not a draft but a referenced article in my subject area. I am sure this will be resolved once the text is properly considered. I can easily add the page again under Eduard Enslin from my saved draft. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Notafly (talk • contribs) 16:19, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
- I'm not sure why you're telling me this? --DannyS712 (talk) 19:00, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
- Sorry I am very confused myself.Did you send me a speedy deletion message perhaps? This all arose from a redirect which I cannot fathom and the author of that is not responding. All I need is a decision to delete the draft he invented.Notafly (talk) 20:36, 7 July 2020 (UTC)

Concerning the Al Cannon page
Hi DannyS712, just checking in to ask if you received any financial compensation for your edits to Al Cannon, the original editor Knapp84 was paid to make the page as seen here https://apps.sc.gov/PublicReporting/Expenditures/Candidate/ExpCountyFilerResult.aspx
Knapp has now revealed conflict of interest on their talk page. I am here to simply ask you if you also have a conflict, this is not meant to come with any accusatory tone, just pure fact checking. Thank you for your time JTW1998+ (talk) 20:02, 09 July 2020 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Users can thank others for their edits. Checkusers can now see user data related to that action. This can help identify sock puppets who harass others using thanks. [3]
Problems
- Everyone was logged out a couple of weeks ago to fix a security problem. The problem was not entirely fixed. Because of this everyone was logged out once again last week. [4][5]
Changes later this week
- Wikis that are not for one specific language can translate pages. Sometimes parts of translations are outdated or missing. Outdated translations are marked with a pink background. Missing translations will also be marked in the future. This markup can sometimes break things. It can soon be disabled by using
<translate nowrap></translate>
on the source page. [6] - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 July. It will be on all wikis from 16 July (calendar).

FPC voter.js question
Hi DannyS712. I was wondering if you could change User:DannyS712/FPC voter.js to only display when on a subpage of WP:FPC. As far as I can tell (without bothering to test it), wrapping lines 19-22 as follows ought to work:
if (mw.config.get('wgTitle').includes('Featured picture candidates')) { // new
mw.util.addPortletLink ( 'p-cactions', 'javascript:void(0)', 'FPC voter', 'ca-FPC-vote', 'vote'); // As before
$('#ca-FPC-vote').on('click', function() { // As before
FPC(); // As before
} ); // As before

Recent changes
- A temporary fix helped wikis make their main pages more mobile friendly. This was in 2012. It has not been recommended since 2017. The mobile main page special casing stopped working 14 July. 60 wikis now have main pages that don't work well on mobile. You can see which ones, how to fix it and how to get help in Phabricator. This is the same problem that was reported in Tech News 2020/24 and 2020/26.
Problems
- There is a problem with the interlanguage links. The interlanguage links are the links that help you find a specific page in a different language. The sorting is broken. The developers are working on a solution. [11]
- Some users keep getting the notifications for the same event. Some of these are old events. [12]
- Some users have trouble logging in. This is probably a browser cookie problem. The developers are working on understanding the problem. If you have trouble logging in you can see the details on Phabricator. [13]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 21 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 22 July. It will be on all wikis from 23 July (calendar).
Future changes
- There is a
Printable version
link. This will disappear. That is because web browsers today can create a printable version or show how it will look in print anyway. [14]

- The Starter kit is now available for wiki communities. This page lists technical resources, tools, and recommendations. These are essential to operate a wiki project. This is mostly useful for smaller wikis where the community has limited experience with this. [15]
- The first features of the Desktop Improvements project are available for logged-in users on all wikis. In order to use them, uncheck Use Legacy Vector in your local or global preferences in section Skin preferences. More improvements are planned. Feedback is welcome.
- On multiple wikis, a UTCLiveClock gadget is available. For wikis that import the gadget directly from mediawiki.org, end users can now choose a different timezone to show instead of UTC.
Problems

CfD bundled nom re: political parties
Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2020 July 27#Category:Anarchist parties
Hi! In this nom, I'm looking to bundle every category under Category:Political parties by ideology that uses just "parties" instead of "political parties". Many of the categories have subcats that would be tagged as well, such as Category:Left-wing parties by country. Is this something with which your bot can assist? czar 21:51, 27 July 2020 (UTC)
- So, visit Category:Political parties by ideology and recursively visit sub categories to compile a list. Each of those, if the name includes "parties" but not "political parties", suggest it be removed to replace "parties" with "political parties"? It should be possible, though I may not get to it for a bit since it'll be tricky generating the list DannyS712 (talk) 04:41, 28 July 2020 (UTC)
- Yes, that's right! Let me know if there's something I can do to reduce the workload. If there's a tool I can use to print the full category tree, I can do the regex and de-duplication to deliver a category list. czar 03:17, 30 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Czar: Unfortunately, I couldn't figure out a way to get the list recursively. I don't think I'll be able to be of much help unless you can generate the list for me, sorry DannyS712 (talk) 11:03, 3 August 2020 (UTC)
- @DannyS712, would this list work? BHG recommended bundling these into the existing/aforementioned nom, if it makes sense to add this late. czar 05:29, 4 September 2020 (UTC)
- That would work, though its a pretty big list, so I'm not sure its a good idea. DannyS712 (talk) 23:14, 7 September 2020 (UTC)
- What's the best way forward then? Should I set up a separate nomination and then ping you to bundle the additional categories into it? Let me know what works best for you czar 05:13, 12 September 2020 (UTC)
- No, I'm saying I don't think such a huge list of categories should be done at once DannyS712 (talk) 06:30, 12 September 2020 (UTC)

ACC tool access request approved
Thank you for your interest in the account creation process. I have verified that you have signed the confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information and approved your request.
You may now access the interface here. Before you begin handling requests, please ensure you have read and understood the account creation guide and username policy to familiarize yourself with the process.
Please subscribe yourself to the private ACC mailing list following the instructions on that page. I also advise that you also join us on IRC #wikipedia-en-accounts connect where a bot informs us when new account requests come in and you can get real time advice on how to handle requests.
Please note failure to correctly assess requests will result in suspension of tool access. Account creation is not a race, and each one should be handled diligently and thoroughly. Releasing personally identifying information (such as IP and email addresses), whether intentionally or unintentionally, is treated very seriously and will generally result in immediate suspension.
Currently you are allowed to create up to six accounts per day, and you won't be able to create an account with a similar name to that of another user; these requests are marked as "Flagged user needed" on the interface. However, if you reach the limit frequently, you can request the account creator permission at Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Account creator.
Please don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you have any questions. Thank you for participating in the account creation process. Again welcome! — JJMC89 (T·C) 20:49, 1 August 2020 (UTC)

- All queries to the Wikidata Query Service failed between 17:50 and 17:59 UTC on Thursday 23 July. Some queries failed during a longer period. [20]
- Interlanguage links were ordered incorrectly for the past few weeks. This problem was also mentioned in Tech News two weeks ago. The problem is now fixed. [21]
- There is a problem with the global preferences for the "Use Legacy Vector" option. Developers are working on fixing it. [22]
- A bug in the Wikibase extension had disabled the "move" and "create" types of protection in the main (Gallery) namespace on Wikimedia Commons. New protections could not be added, and existing protections were not enforced, allowing some page moves and page creations that should not have been possible. This has now been fixed. [23]
Changes later this week
- The video player will change to be simpler and more modern. This week, the current beta feature will become the video player for everyone on most non-Wikipedia wikis. The old player will be removed. [24]
- Users'
global.js
andglobal.css
pages will now also be loaded on the mobile site. You can read documentation for how to avoid applying styles to the mobile skin. [25] - In the MonoBook skin, the
searchGoButton
identifier is nowsearchButton
. This may affect CSS and JS gadgets. Migration instructions can be found in T255953. This was previously mentioned in issue 27. - Bot operators can use Pywikibot to regularly archive discussions. The behavior when the bot uses
counter
to prevent large archives was changed. [26] - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from August 4. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from August 5. It will be on all wikis from August 6 (calendar).

Recent changes
- FileImporter and FileExporter became standard features on all Wikis during the first week of August. They help you transfer files from local wikis to Wikimedia Commons with the original file information and history intact. [27]
Problems
- The mobile skin displays a message at the bottom of the page about who edited last. This message showed raw wikitext. This has now been fixed. Some messages in Structured Discussions and content translation may still appear as raw wikitext. Developers are working on it. [28]
Changes later this week

Draft:British_Art_Medal_Society
Hello DannyS712,
In the 28th June you declined my submission for an article on The British Art Medal Society and made some every helpful suggestions in how I could improve it. I think I have done all that you have asked, though probably not to the standard that you may expect from someone a novice.
I was just wondering what the next steps are, and how I can get the article approved? I appreciate that there appears to be a very large queue that seems to be getting longer and longer ever time I look! Any handy hints and advice welcome.
With best wishes

- If you revert an edit using the undo link your edit is marked with an

[31] - The new OOUI version will not work with Internet Explorer 8. This means the wikis will look strange and not work well in Internet Explorer 8. This was reported in Tech/News/2020/17. This is because keeping the wikis working with very old browsers creates other problems. [32]

A tag has been placed on Category:Russian football defender, 1999 births stubs requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. WikiCup 2020 September newsletter
The fourth round of the competition has finished, with 865 points being required to qualify for the final round, nearly twice as many points as last year. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants with 598 and 605 points being eliminated, and all but two of the contestants who reached the final round having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were
- Bloom6132, with 1478 points gained mainly from 5 featured lists, 12 DYKs and 63 in the news items;
- HaEr48 with 1318 points gained mainly from 2 featured articles, 5 good articles and 8 DYKs;
- Lee Vilenski with 1201 points mainly gained from 2 featured articles and 10 good articles.
Between them, contestants achieved 14 featured articles, 14 featured lists, 2 featured pictures, 87 good articles, 90 DYK entries, 75 ITN entries, 95 featured article candidate reviews and 81 good article reviews. Congratulations to all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.
Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Adding Templates for nomination
Can the bot add templates to a group of related categories for renaming? I'm deciding whether to ask help from Wikipedia talk:Categories for discussion or from you in nominating the categories.Manabimasu (talk) 05:00, 2 September 2020 (UTC)
- @Manabimasu yes, I just need a list of the categories and to know what to tag them with (i.e. what they should be renamed to) DannyS712 (talk) 09:31, 2 September 2020 (UTC)
- @DannyS712: I can give you the two parent categories. There are many subcategories I can’t list off. These subcategories and parent categories contain the phrase say “X” and I want to change X to Y. When using this template
. Proposed name parameter changes from subcategory to subcategory, so if one category is “X W" and another is "X Z". Your bot has to identify X and tag with a proposed name specific to that subcategory so "Y W" and "Y Z". Finally and not necessarily your bot has to list the categories it has tagged in this format
- @DannyS712: I can give you the two parent categories. There are many subcategories I can’t list off. These subcategories and parent categories contain the phrase say “X” and I want to change X to Y. When using this template
* 1st category
* 2nd category
- ...
, so I or and editor can easily create the bundled cfd section.
Is your bot capable of that?Manabimasu (talk) 14:57, 2 September 2020 (UTC)
- cfr2 is used for the entry on the cfd page, not for the tagging. What are the "X" and "Y", and what are the parent categories? DannyS712 (talk) 15:04, 2 September 2020 (UTC)
- @DannyS712: Yeah, I meant

- Given how many of the sub categories have their own subcategories, and so on, I would need a full list of what should be tagged DannyS712 (talk) 16:12, 2 September 2020 (UTC)
- @DannyS712: I was thinking the bot would figure it out. You know any tools that can list recursively all the subcategories and so on.Manabimasu (talk) 16:19, 2 September 2020 (UTC)
- @DannyS712: I have a few more similar parent categories. Can your bot use Special:PrefixIndex or Special:CategoryTree?Manabimasu (talk) 16:49, 2 September 2020 (UTC)

- @DannyS712: What format should the list be?Manabimasu (talk) 19:34, 2 September 2020 (UTC)

Input
I talked to User:Nihiltres who created Module:Hatnote group, but I want to ask you on what you think about Module:Footnote group. This template's documentation Template:Footnote_group gives an idea of how it will work. The main purpose of it is to merge two footnote template or more. I am unsure how <ref> tags are rendered by mediawiki.Manabimasu (talk) 05:08, 2 September 2020 (UTC)
- @Manabimasu:, the template you are trying to create cannot possibly work. Lua runs after
<ref>
tags have been (partially) expanded; in the text Lua receives there'll be a replacement string, something like "UNIQ--ref-00000002-QINU", where the tag used to be. hatnote group works on hatnotes because Lua runs after templates are expanded, and it operates on the output of those hatnote templates. Your idea must operate on the input of reference tags when it does not have access to that input, but only a mid-parsing placeholder. It's a neat idea, but it's not (currently?) technically possible. talk 06:05, 2 September 2020 (UTC)

Add a ping to DNC
Hi Danny
Long time no speak. Hope you are well in these tough times.
I have recently cleaned up the content category tree by removing lots of template categories and other project categories, so I can now use Petscan to find pages in the user and user talk namespaces (described at WT:Categorization#The_cleanup_which_is_possible_now_that_templates_have_been_removed_from_many_content_categories).
Most of those are user sandboxes, which can be easily fixed in one click by using your very handy User:DannyS712/Draft no cat.
However, today I spotted one such page where the user had again added live categories to a page which I had converted to links only yesterday. I assume that this was a good faith effort by them as they created a new draft, and that they probably had not spotted my DNC fix.
So I thought it would be helpful to add a ping when DNC is used in the User namespace. I have forked DNC to User:BrownHairedGirl/Draft no cat.js (permalink), and added some code which generates the ping. I tested it on an ancient sandbox draft in my own userspace[37], and it seems to be working fine.
Would you feel able to incorporate this in the live version of DNC?
Obviously you're a much better coder than me, so you may code it differently. But I think it is a useful enhancement. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 14:18, 7 September 2020 (UTC)
- @BrownHairedGirl: Hey. That's a good idea, though I think
mw.config.get( 'wgRelevantUserName' )
should be enough to get the relevant user's name, rather than the regex replacement of the page title. I'll take a look at adding this in shortly DannyS712 (talk) 14:26, 7 September 2020 (UTC)- Thanks, Danny. It seems that I was right to guess that you would find a more elegant way of coding it! --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 14:37, 7 September 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for the update, @DannyS712.
Just a wee afterthought: would it be better to pipe the ping link?
It's currently: DNC_summary = '@User:' + username + ': ' + DNC_summary
... which displays as per my original hack.
But maybe it would be better as DNC_summary = '@' + username + ': ' + DNC_summary

- Normally pages can be moved to a title that has no existing page yet or to a page that has only one revision, which is a redirect to the page to be moved. A new user right allows editors to move pages over one-revision pages that redirect to anywhere. [38]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 8 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 9 September. It will be on all wikis from 10 September (calendar).
- All MediaWiki API modules will now use

. This was inconsistent before. [39]
Future changes
- The Wikipedia Android app team might work on patrolling tools in the future. You can let them know what tools would be useful for you or for less experienced patrollers. See the page on mediawiki.org.
- OTRS will be updated to a new version. This will probably take around two days. OTRS agents will not have access to the system during these days. Emails that come in during the update will be delivered when the update is done. The plan is to start around 08:00 UTC on 14 September. This could change. [40]
- The Wikipedia Android app will send push notifications if users want them. This could help you see for example when someone wrote on your talk page or your edit was reverted. This will need Google Play Services to work. It will also be possible to get the app without Google Play Services but push notifications will not work. Google Play Services is also used to make the app work for Android 4.4 users. [41][42]
- Wikimedia code review could move to GitLab. It would be hosted on Wikimedia servers. You can take part in the consultation.
- Dropdown menus in the Vector skin use a
.menu
class. This will not work in the future. Scripts can usenav ul
instead..vectorTabs
and.vectorMenu
will also not work. Some scripts need to be updated. You can read more in Phabricator.

Importing a Template to Fanon Wiki
Hello, I'm SkyGuy94. I was wondering if You could help with something. I want to import the traditional Mongolian script template to Fanon Wiki, where I am an active user. The current method I'm using on Fanon Wiki – <span style="writing-mode:tb-rl"></span> – results in the mongol script I use to be aligned this "ᠵᠢᠱᠢᠶᠡ ᠲᠧᠺᠰᠲ". As you can see, while the text is in the right direction, the bottom end of the text is aligned to the bottom of the line and ascending upwards instead of the top end being aligned to the top of the line and descending downwards. That just doesn't look authentic. Is there any way to properly import the template and all its components to Fanon wiki. I'd try to do it myself, but my programing skills are far below mediocre and I'm worried I'd mess it up if I tried. --SkyGuy94 (talk) 22:29, 18 September 2020 (UTC)
- Not sure, sorry. Maybe ask at WP:VPT? DannyS712 (talk) 22:37, 18 September 2020 (UTC)
Guild of Copy Editors September 2020 Newsletter
Guild of Copy Editors September 2020 Newsletter
Hello and welcome to the September GOCE newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since June 2020. Current and upcoming events
September Drive: Our current backlog-elimination drive is open until 23:59 on 30 September (UTC) and is open to all copy editors. Sign up today! Election reminder: our end-of-year Election of Coordinators opens for nominations on 1 December. Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here. Drive and Blitz reports
June Blitz: An uncorrected typo (even copy editors make copy editing mistakes!) led to an eight-day "leap blitz" from 14 to 21 June, focusing on requests and articles tagged in May. 19 participating editors claimed 54 copy edits. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. July Drive: Over 750,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event, keeping pace with the previous three self-isolated drives. Of the 38 people who signed up, 30 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here. August Blitz: From 16 to 22 August, we copy edited articles tagged in June and July 2020 and requests. 12 participating editors completed 37 copy edits on the blitz. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. Other news
June election: Jonesey95 was chosen to continue as lead coordinator, assisted by Baffle gab1978, Tdslk, Twofingered Typist, and first-time coordinator Puddleglum2.0. Reidgreg took a break after serving for a couple years. Thanks to everyone who participated! Progress report: As of 01:33, 18 September 2020 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors had processed 532 requests since 1 January and there were 38 requests awaiting completion on the Requests page. The backlog of articles tagged for copy-editing stood at 433 (see monthly progress graph above). Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Baffle gab1978, Puddleglum2.0, Tdslk and Twofingered Typist. To discontinue receiving GOCE newsletters, please remove your name from our mailing list.

Please reopen
Your closure was controversial WP:BADNAC. Reopen or I will challenge this at deletion review. Lightburst (talk) 21:49, 20 September 2020 (UTC)
- Given that Wikipedia:Speedy keep is extremely clear about what to do for articles linked to on the main page, I disagree that this is a bad close. Had you waited longer than 10 minutes before opening a deletion review, we could have discussed this, per Wikipedia:Deletion review#Instructions - "Consider attempting to discuss the matter with the closer as this could resolve the matter more quickly. There could have been a mistake, miscommunication, or misunderstanding, and a full review may not be needed. Such discussion also gives the closer the opportunity to clarify the reasoning behind a decision."
- However, since you have already opened a deletion review, and since the topic and the AfD is clearly controversial, I'm willing to revert my close. Instead I'll just comment that it should be speedy kept per the guidelines.
- In the future please allow editors more time to respond to such a post before you proceed with opening a deletion review. Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 22:23, 20 September 2020 (UTC)

Recent changes
- There is a new tag for reverted edits. For example you can see it in the recent changes feed or in the article history. It is added to edits when they have been undone, rollbacked or manually reverted to an older version of the page. [45][46]
Changes later this week
- The number of times you can do something in a period of time on wiki is limited. This could be the number of edits per minute or the number of users you email in a day. Some users are not affected by all limits because of their user rights. They could soon see the limit even if it does not affect them. [47]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 22 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 23 September. It will be on all wikis from 24 September (calendar).

DYK for Robert F. Utter
On 26 September 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Robert F. Utter, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Robert Utter resigned from the Washington Supreme Court in protest of the death penalty? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Robert F. Utter. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Robert F. Utter), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

X-Calibur
The X-Calibur article is open for edits to help it conform to Wikipedia’s standards, but there are a plethora of references that are cited in the draft.
I’m trying to create a historical record for the artist X-Calibur, not a promotional article. Recent changes
- Admins can now see links to diffs of deleted revisions on Special:AbuseLog. This uses the interface of Special:Undelete. [48]
- Editors are automatically added to some user groups. For example editors are added to autoconfirmed users when they have edited enough times and long enough. Abuse filters can hinder users from automatically getting user rights for a period of time. They can also remove rights user have. Wikis can now ask to change how long this period of time is for their wiki in Phabricator. It is currently five days. [49]
Problems
- Last year some abuse filters stopped working because of a new change. If they tried to use variables that were unavailable for that action they would fail. This has now been fixed. [50]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 29 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 30 September. It will be on all wikis from 1 October (calendar).
Future changes
- You can't see the language links to other language versions from the talk page or history page. They are also not shown when you edit an article. This could change. It is not decided if for example the history page should link to another history page or to the article. You can take part in the discussion in Phabricator.
- The link colours could change. This is to make the difference between links and other text more clear. You can read more in Phabricator.
- In your preferences you can choose to get different notifications on the web or by email. You will see
Apps
as one of the alternatives later this week. This is because the Android and iOS Wikipedia apps will use push notifications for those who want them. You can see the preferences on the test wiki. The goal is to have push notifications on Android in October and on iOS in early 2021. [51] - You can soon put pages on your watchlist for a limited time. This could be useful if you want to watch something for a shorter time but don't want it on your watchlist forever. It now works on mediawiki.org and will come to more wikis later. You can read more and see when it will come to other wikis.
- You can see what Wikimedians think are the best new technical tools this year. You can also nominate them.

Hello, Is it possible to have a script created that will help over at RM just like XFD closure, it should be able to relist, close, fix links , log the RM at the articles talk page and move the page if necessary. Speedy deletion declined: User:2605:A000:1133:810F:3DE0:A0D6:62A0:6B6E
Hello DannyS712. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of User:2605:A000:1133:810F:3DE0:A0D6:62A0:6B6E, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: U2 specifically excludes "user pages for IP users who have edited". Thank you. Jackmcbarn (talk) 05:13, 2 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Jackmcbarn I believe this falls under G6 though - IPsock might be valid for IP user pages, but the current content is useless DannyS712 (talk) 05:15, 2 October 2020 (UTC)
- The criteria for speedy deletion are meant to be narrowly construed, and I don't think "the current content is useless" fits. Jackmcbarn (talk) 16:42, 2 October 2020 (UTC)

Late onset congenital adrenal hyperplasia - too technical
You have added a "too technical" template on the page Late onset congenital adrenal hyperplasia in 2019. We have edited the page since then. Is it still too technical? Recent changes
- There is a new tool where you can see which home wiki users have in discussions on Meta. This can help show which communities are not part of the discussion on wikis where we make decisions that affect many other wikis.
- You can now thank users for file uploads or for changing the language of a page. [52]
Problems
- There were many errors with the new MediaWiki version last week. The new version was rolled back. Updates that should have happened last week are late. [53]
- Everyone was logged out. This was because a user reported being logged in to someone else's account. The problem should be fixed now. [54]
- Many pages have JavaScript errors. You can read more and now see a list of user scripts with errors.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 6 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 7 October. It will be on all wikis from 8 October (calendar).
- Letters immediately after a link are shown as part of the link. For example the entire word in
Children
is linked. On Arabic wikis this works at both the start and end of a word. Previously on Arabic wikis numbers and other non-letter Unicode characters were shown as part of the link at the start of a word but not at the end. Now only Latin and Arabic letters will extend links on Arabic wikis. [55]
Future changes
- You will be able to read but not to edit the wikis for up to an hour on 27 October around 14:00 (UTC). It will probably be shorter than an hour. [56]

Question about overwrite editing when CE
Hi, Danny - I was just wondering if it's possible to make copy editing one's own comment real-time? IOW - my original post misspelled something, or wasn't clear, and I go back to correct it, but instead of correcting the original, it creates a new diff. The problem arises when the old diff is used instead of the new diff, and it could result in an editor being blocked or t-banned, especially if the editor doesn't remember or think about the fact they corrected it. Does that make sense? Maybe set a time limit for realtime corrections? FB allows such editing, and changes the comment in real time. Atsme Talk 📧 18:41, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
- I'm not sure I fully understand your question, but once an edit is saved the only way to correct the original would be (as far as I know) to manually change the contents of the database for the revision in question, which is just not done. DannyS712 (talk) 18:54, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
- I compose a comment, click preview & fail to see any issues so I click publish. At that point, a diff is created. I come back to that post some time later, and realize that I misspelled a word, or that my comment might be misconstrued. I copy edit, and a new diff is created. My question is, can we keep the same diff #, or just add the revisions to the edited version without creating an entirely different diff - maybe append the edit with a v.1 or v.2, something along that line? When gathering diffs for whatever reason, we don't always know that particular comment was updated or copyedited, etc. because a new diff is created. I think it would be useful to see the edit/revision history of a specific comment kept in the same place. Also, when gathering diffs as evidence, an editor might grab an old version that was updated and not know it. I think Wbm1058 writes code or something along that line so I've pinged him to see if he can provide some input. I'd like to know if something like this is even possible before I add it to the WMF wish list. Atsme Talk 📧 22:00, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Atsme: diff numbers refer to the revisions, and so cannot be changed (I don't know about Wbm1058, but I've written hundreds of patches to mediawiki core, and haven't heard about anything like this) DannyS712 (talk) 22:04, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
- Well yes, currently a revision cannot be changed, but this should be technically possible. The devil may be in the details, though. I think the phpbb software allows this. After I post a message in a forum using this software I can make spelling corrections to the same message. It would make sense to set a time limit on this (maybe a minute or two), and only allow such changes if they were made to the most recent edit on the page. The revision would maintain the same revision ID. There would be no record kept of the original version of the edit as only one version is retained for a given revision ID. This would allow someone to fix a bad edit where they accidentally (unintentionally) saved an edit while they were still in preview mode. – wbm1058 (talk) 22:33, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Wbm1058: Ah, okay, so this is a request for a feature to edit existing revisions. I doubt that it would be accepted as a feature request / implemented in core, but it certainly does sound interesting DannyS712 (talk) 22:42, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
- Or give anyone, not just administrators, the power to delete a single edit that they made if it's the most recent edit on a page, within a reasonably small time window. Or course you can't delete just one edit currently. On a page with 1,000 edits you need to delete the whole page, then restore 999 edits. Which is a pain, both for the editor and the software performing this resource-intensive operation. It makes history-merging a more tedious procedure. – wbm1058 (talk) 22:41, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you, Wbm1058. If only I could have explained it that simply. Facepalm Sorry about that, Danny. Atsme Talk 📧 22:53, 7 October 2020 (UTC)

Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 20 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 21 October. It will be on all wikis from 22 October (calendar).
Future changes
- You will be able to read but not to edit the wikis for up to an hour on 27 October around 14:00 (UTC). It will probably be shorter than an hour. [63]
- In the AbuseFilter extension, the
rmspecials()
function will be updated soon so that it does not remove the "space" character. Wikis are advised to wrap all the uses ofrmspecials()
withrmwhitespace()
wherever necessary to keep filters' behavior unchanged. You can use the search function on Special:AbuseFilter to locate its usage. [64] - Some gadgets and user-scripts use the HTML div with the ID
#jump-to-nav
. This div will be removed soon. Maintainers should replace these uses with either#siteSub
or#mw-content-text
. A list of affected scripts is at the top of phab:T265373.

Problems
- You will be able to read but not to edit the wikis for up to an hour on October 27 around 14:00 (UTC). It will probably be shorter than an hour. [65]
- Last week, links to "diffs" from mobile watchlists and recentchanges were linking to page-revisions instead of diffs. This has now been fixed. [66]
Changes later this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Future changes
- Since the introduction of the interface administrators user group in 2018, administrators couldn’t view the deleted history of CSS/JS pages. Now they can. [67]
- There was a problem with the Change Tags. The software would apply the "Reverted" tag to any page actions such as page-protection changes if they came directly after a reverted edit. This has now been fixed for new edits. [68]
- The Reply tool will be offered as an opt-in Beta Feature on most Wikipedias in November. Another announcement will be made once the date is finalized. [69]

Interface administrator changes

- Community sanctions now authorize administrators to place under indefinite semiprotection
any article on a beauty pageant, or biography of a person known as a beauty pageant contestant, which has been edited by a sockpuppet account or logged-out sockpuppet
, to be logged at WP:GS/PAGEANT.
- Community sanctions now authorize administrators to place under indefinite semiprotection
- Sysops will once again be able to view the deleted history of JS/CSS pages; this was restricted to interface administrators when that group was introduced.
- Twinkle's block module now includes the ability to note the specific case when applying a discretionary sanctions block and/or template.
- Sysops will be able to use Special:CreateLocalAccount to create a local account for a global user that is prevented from auto-creation locally (such as by a filter or range block). Administrators that are not sure if such a creation is appropriate should contact a checkuser.
- The 2020 Arbitration Committee Elections process has begun. Eligible editors will be able to nominate themselves as candidates from November 8 through November 17. The voting period will run from November 23 through December 6.
- The Anti-harassment RfC has concluded with a summary of the feedback provided.

Recent changes
- You can no longer read Wikimedia wikis if your browser uses very old TLS. This is because it is a security problem for everyone. It could lead to downgrade attacks. Since October 29, 2020, users who use old TLS versions will not be able to connect to Wikimedia projects. A list of browser recommendations is available. All modern operating systems and browsers are always able to reach Wikimedia projects. [70]
- There is a new automatic tracking category available: Pages with non-numeric formatnum arguments. It collects pages which use the
formatnum
parser function with invalid (non-numeric) input, e.g.
. Note that
is also invalid input: as described in the documentation, the argument should be unformatted so that it can be reliably and correctly localised. The tracking category will help identify problematic usage and double-formatting. The new tracking category's name can be translated at translatewiki. [71]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from November 3. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from November 4. It will be on all wikis from November 5 (calendar).
- Administrators and stewards will be able to use a special page (Special:CreateLocalAccount) to force local account creation for a global account. This is useful when account creation is blocked for that user (by a block or a filter). [72]
- The Reply tool will be offered as an opt-in Beta Feature on most Wikipedias on November 4. This change excludes the English, Russian, and German-language Wikipedias, plus a few smaller Wikipedias with special circumstances. You can read the help page and the troubleshooting guide for more information. [73]
Future changes
- A discussion has been restarted about using a Unicode minus sign (− U+2212) in the output of
formatnum
when it is given a negative argument. [74] - In the future IP addresses of unregistered users will not be shown for everyone. They will get an alias instead. There will be a new user right or an opt-in function for more vandal fighters to see the IPs of unregistered users. There would be some criteria for who gets the user right or opt-in. There will also be other new tools to help handle vandalism. This is early in the process and the developers are still collecting information from the communities before they suggest solutions.

WikiCup 2020 November newsletter
The 2020 WikiCup has come to an end, with the final round going down to the wire. Our new Champion is Lee Vilenski (submissions), the runner-up last year, who was closely followed by Gog the Mild (submissions). In the final round, Lee achieved 4 FAs and 30 GAs, mostly on cue sport topics, while Gog achieved 3 FAs and 15 GAs, mostly on important battles and wars, which earned him a high number of bonus points. The Rambling Man (submissions) was in third place with 4 FAs and 8 GAs on football topics, with Epicgenius (submissions) close behind with 19 GAs and 16 DYK's, his interest being the buildings of New York.
The other finalists were Hog Farm (submissions), HaEr48 (submissions), Harrias (submissions) and Bloom6132 (submissions). The final round was very productive, and besides 15 FAs, contestants achieved 75 FAC reviews, 88 GAs and 108 GAN reviews. Altogether, Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors all through the contest. Well done everyone!
All those who reached the final will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or in the event of a tie, to the overall leader in this field.
- Gog the Mild (submissions) wins the featured article prize, for a total of 14 FAs during the course of the competition.
- Bloom6132 (submissions) win the featured list prize, for 5 FLs in round 4.
- Rhododendrites (submissions) wins the featured picture prize, for 3 FPs in round 3 and 5 overall.
- Lee Vilenski (submissions) wins the featured article reviewer prize, for 23 FAC reviews in round 5.
- Epicgenius (submissions) wins the good article prize, for 45 GAs in round 2 and 113 overall.
- MPJ-DK (submissions) wins the topic prize, for 33 articles in good topics in round 2.
- The Rambling Man (submissions) wins the good article reviewer prize, for 100 good article reviews in round 2.
- Epicgenius (submissions) wins the DYK prize, for 22 Did you know articles in round 4 and 94 overall.
- Bloom6132 (submissions) wins the ITN prize, for 63 In the news articles in round 4 and 136 overall.
Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2021 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! DiscussionCloser adding excess blank lines
Hey there! First of all, thank you so much for DiscussionCloser - it's such a helpful script. I've noticed though that it adds quite a few excess blank lines between the bottom of the starting closing template and the discussion being closed. Any idea why this might be occurring? ItsPugle (please ping on reply) 10:14, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
- Well, I didn't make it, and I'm planning to rewrite it at some point, but I can poke around and see if I can figure out why DannyS712 (talk) 14:43, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
- @DannyS712: Oh. Anyways, if you wouldn't mind, I'd really appreciate it. ItsPugle (please ping on reply) 09:19, 10 November 2020 (UTC)

Changes later this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Future changes
- You can see reference previews. This shows a preview of the footnote when you hover over it. This has been a beta feature. It will move out of beta and be enabled by default. There will be an option not to use it. The developers are looking for small or medium-sized wikis to be the first ones. You can let them know if your wiki is interested. [75]
- From November 16 the categories will not be sorted in order for a short time. This is because the developers are upgrading to a new version of the internationalisation library. They will use a script to fix the existing categories. This can take a few hours or a few days depending on how big the wiki is. You can read more. [76][77]
