Regarding copyright applicability for the content sourced from news source and general website.

Hi, Thanks for opening CCI case for my edits. For the listings you provided that passed copyvio. There are some news links as well. Though I will try to correct all those listed. Can you please let me know if there is any difference regarding copyright policies if a given piece of information is modified and published from news source and/or a website and what can be done if there is a favourable case involving sourcing of data like what is mentioned here regrading the information added for the article Paradip Refinery . Thank you for responding to my previous question about the Centre for South Asian Studies article. You are right about Douglas Adams and what it means to be notable, but, I was just wondering how this page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Center_for_South_Asian_and_Middle_Eastern_Studies was considered OK, without many references, whereas the page I created was not OK? Also, perhaps you could take a look at the page I created to help me, because I really thought I put in many external references to show the Centre's notability as a world class research centre.

Personally, I do not consider Center for South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies as OK, and I have now tagged it accordingly.

Looking at your article submission, I think one of the problems is that your references section is overwhelmed with sources that are not about the topic. For example, I just now clicked on the Economic Times link, and that piece does not mention "Centre for South Asian Studies" anywhere in its text. So how can it be useful to prove the notability of the centre?

Increasingly I feel that almost none of these many sub-divisions of university faculties are sufficiently well covered in reliable independent sources for there to need to be a separate Wikipedia article about them. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 16:01, 21 April 2013 (UTC)

Difference between revisions: Basildon Academies

Hi, Following your message regarding difference between revisions, I would like to clarify that these changes made were intentional. The Academies have recently undergone huge changes within their structure and are now under new leadership, hence the need for change to the information on the Wikipedia page. I am unaware of who created the initial material, and although backed by many citations, this material is now dated and in need of ammending. The individuals who are listed and mentioned in the 'Basildon Academies' Wikipedia page are no longer members of staff at the school, thus providing a need for the information to be updated accordingly. ... all of it completely unsourced.

That's quite all right - it has been an interesting process, and seems to have helped the article along some more even without the green blob.

I don't think there will be a next round, as if one sidelines Peel as a source then two-thirds of the subject's career don't have sufficient sources to give anything resembling proper coverage. (Tabloid newspapers from the 1960s droning on about how wonderful he was, and a handful of tabloid newspaper journalists from the 1990s droning on about how wonderful, in their personal experience, he wasn't. Plus a BBC documentary that has a fair amount of footage of him, but only provides a couple of actual hard facts.)

This was how the article looked before I started working on it, mainly authored by User:Emeraude who duly showed up at the GA review. The problems with that version were what led to a discussion on the talk page where it was suggested Peel's book should be used to fill in the holes and provide some neutral coverage with appropriate weight for what the subject was actually notable for. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 00:15, 23 April 2013 (UTC)

Yeah, it'll be tricky. Technically, though, there's no length requirement for GAs, so even if this boils down to only a handful of paragraphs of verifiable information, it could be renominated. That may be more trouble than it's worth at this point, though. In either case, thanks again for your work! I'm sorry this has come up - it never occurred to me the Peel book was not considered as reliable. I have put the review on hold for seven days to see if there is any more response from the RS board (sorry if that is just prolonging the agony). I still feel it is an excellent article and the work done on it deserves to be recognised. SagaciousPhil - Chat 08:25, 23 April 2013 (UTC)

I don't see that it can become a GA, as there's three separate aspects of its sourcing that are problematic (two of which were present before I had any involvement with the article). As well as the BBC documentary mentioned above, I did plan to get hold of Tim Card's book, but that, although it boasts a "respectable" publisher, would be difficult to regard as an independent source - and by all accounts didn't have much detail anyway. (One could wonder why Peel did not find an equally good publisher for The Land of Lost Content as he had for his other books, and speculate that a balanced portrayal was not what the literary establishment wanted on this topic in the mid-90s. Animal Farm was a similarly unwelcome perspective in the mid-40s. So it goes.)

I'd already listed on the talk page the books likely to have useful coverage of the rest of his career, but most of them are histories of second-rank schools, and such books tend to have an air of self-publishing about them in one way or another, so don't really help us along. (One of my employers was once involved in something similar, a history of the organisation in hardback, and ordered one copy for every member of staff in addition to however many they thought necessary for other purposes. The books arrived on a pallet, several thousand of them. Sometime later I happened to walk through the warehouse and the pallet was still there, with all but a few hundred of the books still in it. Unlike Peel's book, I doubt it ended up in many libraries.)

If you do decide to read Peel's book, I must warn you that there's a very unfortunate incident involving one of Chenevix-Trench's dogs about half way through.

Assistance

I appreciate and understand the removal of my additions to The Ensworth School. Can you advise the best way to remove or update grossly inaccurate updates about our school. They permeate almost every section. Many of the updates have citations do not actually confirm or relate to the update. If I delete the incorrect statements, I get notes that say I am the vandal. Thanks for mentioning this - sorry I've been rather wrapped up in other things. You are quite right in your reply, but we still haven't quite fixed the underlying problems, and thus the complaining editor is still floundering around on the article itself. It's sometimes difficult with vanity publishing - there is a breed 'bible' that was self published in 1976 and before he died the author eventually burned all the remaining copies in the 1980s. (Incidentally, the editor who requested deletion wrote "Feel the deletion is part of some sort of campaign against us", which suggests that he may have a conflict of interest.) I felt the article built piece upon piece nicely and showed the social changes during Chenevix-Trench's life as a backdrop to how public opinion of his methods evolved. Much of the changing social backdrop contrast may have been unintentional on my part (or maybe a result of Peel's book?), but it did strike me that a great deal of the "controversy" in the 1990s was based on events in the 1940s and 1950s which would not have been seen as especially unusual at the time.

Certainly I saw facets of Chenevix-Trench's character that were reflected in teachers that taught me. Bizarrely, one of Chenevix-Trench's contemporaries later taught me at Oxford, and was the subject of some quite humorous commentary, on the subject of corporal punishment, from an Old Etonian fellow pupil. I'd better stop there as both are still alive and well!

Risking striking a discordant note, but I have a comment on a topic that I think you contributed to at your forum thingummy. For some reason, I was mentioned in the discussion about that Bernstein fellow. Maybe because I'm Jewish (or black?). I thought you should let your fellow forum reprobates know that there was a strange coincidence here - Bernstein and I actually had a "live" discussion a few days ago. Sadly he did not see eye to eye with me, or with anyone else present. But perhaps he recorded the entire discussion so that others can see how cruel and heartless Wikipedians are. Review of Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Trinidad and Tobago Chess Championship

I have looked at several of the Wiki pages on Chess Championship from different countries and I believe that I have presented more sources (especially in Newspaper articles) than several of them (Albanian, Panama, Bangladesh, Jamaica to name a few). In some countries Chess is not considered highly, so sources other than newspaper articles, the FIDE web site, and the Chess Association will be rare.

If this article is not accepted, there is the possibility that the early history of chess in Trinidad & Tobago could be lost to future generations. Isn't Wikipedia about preserving History? Watcher56 (talk) 03:06, 23 May 2013 (UTC)

Newspaper articles are useful for proving notability. After consulting with a Wikipedian who is also a sports journalist, it was mentioned that the association is mentioned a number of times in books that appear on Google Books. That's great, I've added the picture and a basic infobox (is "Occupation: Diplomat" still correct if you're now advising/policymaking rather than engaging in diplomacy?)

I've also fixed the link to Julian Evans such that it doesn't point to the wrong person; instead, someone may create an article that will go at Julian Evans (diplomat).

The purpose of the panel is indeed much more interesting, given the attention given to North Korea on the world stage. I will have a look for a reference for this when I have more time. I really am so grateful for your help with all this. Looking at what else should be on there, when reviewing similar articles, most entries have more detail from earlier careers. Of course it’s also all in Who’s Who, but that’s not available easily online. Up to you whether this is worth doing. I also hadn’t noticed that my other book isn’t listed. It’s Martin Uden: Times Past in Korea: An Illustrated Collection of Encounters, Customs and Daily Life Recorded by Foreign Visitors ISBN-978-1903350065. One further idea is that the current job is one of some distinction. I feel that just as the ambassadorial jobs merit mention under Offices Held, so does the Coordinator of the DPRK Panel. I've added the other book. I'm mildly confused by Everard being "British Ambassador to North Korea" (so Wikipedia thinks)... is he? I do agree that Co-ord of the DPRK Panel is rather important, but creating a new and entire template and boxes about that is beyond my means right now. It may be that Wikipedia has boxes for some things but not for other things.

Many thanks to both of you, and sorry for the very late reply. The presence or absence of a green blob on the ACT article is not a great worry; I've always been more interested in the quality of the article as a whole, and both of you have helped that along as well. (There's still more to be added to the ACT article, particularly when I finally manage to get hold of the Fettes history that apparently discusses him in quite some detail. Naturally future decades will also produce new histories of Eton and other relevant places, and rumours from those nearer such things tell me that his reputation there has undergone quite considerable improvement in recent years.) Please do also keep an eye on The Land of Lost Content, as I will probably expand it still more when I have time, and it would be useful to have feedback on whether additions are appropriately neutral and adequately sourced.

You commented that my article of Hector Rosales was probably declined due to lack of secondary sources which would have helped to contribute to the article's reliability. The problem I have had from the very beginning is that there is virtually NO information on the life of Hector Rosales. I found two sources on his life, one of which was the website entitled, hrosales.com; the other website, which was incredibly short, appeared to have taken its information from the hrosales.com website. I did find Spanish language websites, but these just comment on and reviewed his poetry and other works. I would not have picked this person to write an article about had I known this, but this was a Senior English class assignment which we all had to complete for a class grade. With so little information out there on H. Rosales, do you honestly feel that the teacher was misguided in his assignment to write an article on an author who was listed on the Wikipedia "authors who have no articles published on Wikipedia"? Because, now, after the fact, that kind of seems to be the case???

If I am not allowed to use the author himself as a credible source, that pretty much left me with no information, yet every one in our class HD to pick an author from the Wikipedia list. I guess maybe I just picked the least suitable (for information) author?? I would really appreciate your thoughts on this!

Class assignments (usually essays) may not be always suitable for Wikipedia because our referencing standards may be higher than that of educational institutions. Ignoring that, I would say that two websites do not show notability, especially as it is a article about a living person. Looking at the AfC page, I would suggest that you reference the unreferenced parts of the article so the content is verifiable — which can be done with anything from web pages to books. Changes to SuggestBot's suggestions

We have changed the number of suggested articles and which categories they are selected from. The number of stubs has been greatly reduced, the number of articles needing sources doubled, and two new categories added (orphans and unencyclopaedic articles). We have also modified the layout of the suggestions and added sortable columns with various types of information about each article. The first two columns are:

Views/Day

Daily average number of views an article's had over the past 14 days.

Quality

Predicted article quality on a 1- to 3-star scale. Placing your cursor over the stars should give you a pop-up describing the article's quality (Low/Medium/High), current assessment class, and predicted assessment class.

The method we use to predict article quality also allows us to assess whether an article might need specific types of work in order to improve its quality. The work needed might not correspond to cleanup tags added to the article, since our method is not based on those. We have added five columns reflecting this work assessment, where a red X indicates improvement is needed. Placing your cursor over an X should give you a pop-up with a short description of the work needed. The five columns seek to answer the following five questions:

Is more content needed?

Headings

Does this article have an appropriate section structure?

Images

Is the number of illustrative images about right?

Does this article link to enough other Wikipedia articles?

Corporal punishment in the home

Hello, you undid my contribution on the page of 'Corporal punishment in the home'. Under the heading 'Views on corporal punishment' I put the view of world renowned expert on child abuse, Alice Miller. I linked to the Wikipedia article on her, and I gave the sources, namely her own website, the exact page where she states her views on corporal punishment, and her own flyer on the subject. You reverted this and said: "You need sources that comment on her views or describe them as significant, in order to make claims like this - discuss on talk page." However, the fact that Alice Miller is an expert on the subject, I linked to her, and the fact that I gave verifiable sources for the views stated by her, seems more than sufficient. It is not required to have others to comment on her views, as they are her views, an regocnized expert in the field, and her views only. That is why I put this under the heading "Views". Please comment. If you fail to convince me, I will have to revert back again, as her views are highly significant and relevant, and need to be included. The other entries given under views, do not have sources commenting on their claims either. You seem to make an exception in the case of Alice Miller's views. I've removed "world renowned" from the article about Alice Miller herself as well - see WP:PEACOCK. (Did you write some of that article?) She is certainly a notable psychologist, by Wikipedia's standards. "Recognised expert in the field" is rather more problematic. I don't see why her views can't be mentioned in the article, but certainly not in the form that you have edit-warred to include thus far. I'm also open to the idea that there is other material in the article which would be best removed (or trimmed). Corporal punishment in the home

If you do not see why Miller's views cannot be included, why remove them? I did not edit war, I simply reverted my initial contribution, as I was unable to contact the person who undid it. I did contribute something to the article on Alice Miller, but not the words 'world renowned', which you removed. I am happy with the removal of that. But I am not sure now what is an acceptable way to tackle the problem, I want to include Alice Miller, but have been barred from doing so, on questionable grounds. Do you have any suggestions? I did indeed have some suggestions, and I already put my suggestion to you in a reply on this very page only a few hours ago. You should be discussing on the talk page of the article.

As for "a single sentence" - yes that might be helpful, but what is it going to say? That Miller considered that all crime and violence in the world (everything from petty theft to genocide, apparently) is the result of all parents being abusive to all children, and that corporal punishment in the home was part of this? The last message I left on your talk page was in 2012. It's highly likely that the IP address you are using has been assigned to some other person or household since then. And thus is nothing to do with you at all.

You can avoid irrelevant messages like that one by creating an account - see WP:ACCOUNT. It also has some other advantages, which are described there.

Several sources have reported on the incident, although checking the talkpage, there seems to be extreme censorship. BLP is being followed in that we are attributing these claims to published and reputable sources. Here are a few from a quick google search:

• The Sydney Morning Herald, one of the oldest and most respected in AU.
• HuffPo from NyPost.
• Daily Record, incidentally already cited in the article, but we seem to be selective in what parts we choose to include.

And plenty more sources. Actually, I think I might have to move this to the article's talkpage.

If those don't convince you, I'll be happy to go find the public records and prove it since I know about this rather well.
