Irish articles assessments

It seems that the assessment of Irish articles has fallen off the radar but recently Flowerpotman, Sarah777 and I have been doing a little work on this as well as actually classifying articles (actually Sarah has done the most work). Anyway, you are listed as a member of the WikiProject hence this post.

  • The first thing that needs doing is to work on the WikiProject template. Actually there are two templates both of which get recorded by the assessment statistics bot that collects the ratings and creates the listings in the category Category:Ireland articles by quality. The two project templates are {{Irelandproj}} listed on the main project page and {{WikiProject Ireland}} listed on the assessment page—the first allows both quality and importance rating as well as nesting but no reviewer comments, while the second allows quality rating and comments but the importance does not seem to work and comments are not included. This needs to be fixed, so we use one that works fully—can you help?
  • The next thing is to decide if we just let editors assess as they wish or to create some criteria or guidelines for rating the quality and importance of the Irish articles. Personally I am in favour of some guidelines—some will be easy to decide while others are a little more complex. What do you think?
  • Some projects make lists of articles for assessment while other go after groups of articles by category. What should we do? A mixture of both by using a "To do list"?
  • As of the last assessment statistics bot run on Sunday, August 20, only 1462 articles have been tagged, of which 1156 have been assessed for quality but 660 of these have no importance value.
  • Besides these 1462 there must be hundreds more untagged articles that should be tagged when we get the template issue mentioned above fixed.

We are not bad in our assessments but some projects have all their articles assessed while others are lacking more than we are. We can really use a few active editors to bring assessments to the fore. Please reply on the assessment talk page as to what you can do. Please help out. ww2censor 17:13, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

This is an automated message from a robot. You have recently uploaded Image:An Lúb.PNG. The file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 18:55, 7 September 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. If you believe you received this message in error, please notify the bot's owner. Orphaned non-free media (Image:Kilrea logo.gif)

Thanks for uploading Image:Kilrea logo.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 13:35, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

Townlands.

I only took townland categories off a small number of articles that did not state they referred to townlands. I do, of course, know that they are not the same as villages - I created the separate categorisation for NI county townlands. In a similar vein, do you understand that a village is rarely a townland, but actually a settlement within a townland, so they are rarely the same thing, even though they may share the same name. Therefore my re-categorisations would almost certainly have been correct. Ardfern 18:11, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

UK infobox

Hello Derry Boi,

I'm a little concerned about your recent reversions of the Template:Infobox UK place in Northern Ireland locations. This infobox has been set up by the editting community to be used for the entire United Kingdom - not just Great Britain. This involved painstaking syntax coding, map calibration, pantone selection, WP:CITIES consultation and most of all, an overwhelming consensus to go forwards with this infobox. It's also a requirement of WP:UKCITIES that we use this infobox for UK settlements.

Going forwards, we don't use the Irish infobox for Northern Irish locations. I'm sure this was just a misunderstanding on your part, as your edit summaries suggest that I'd converted to a "GB" infobox, which is incorrect.

Thanks for your attention in this matter. You may wish to help the project in it's final push to roll this out for other places in the UK? Thanks again anyway, Jza84 22:21, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

A simple request

Hi DerryBoi, seeing as this is the English language version of Wikipedia i'd like to ask you to please have your userpage in English, or at the very least have an English counterpart on the page so we can actually tell what you are saying, as most Wikipedians have no clue, and even many Irish nationalists don't speak fluent Gaelic.

I wouldn't object if i came across your user page in the Gaelic version of Wikipedia as that is the language it is written in and would make sense, but this is English Wiki and would fit convention. Mabuska 21:52, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

Having said that i always thought there was a Gaelic version of Wikipedia? As i can't find it. Mabuska 22:09, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Eoghan Rua crest.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Eoghan Rua crest.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI 22:23, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

I already have, it looks like you weren't done writing it yet. Sorry for the misunderstanding, but may I suggest in the future you write the article on a subpage and move it to the mainspace when it's ready to go? That gives you more time to fix typos and such before it goes up on search engines and the like as well. Good luck with the article, and happy editing! Infoboxes

Ah this is going to be fun. My problem with using the Ireland Town info box is the information presented. Look, regardless of the politics Derry and other towns are geographically in the UK. The UK town infobox presents more relevant information, it presents UK *and* Ireland map references, it doesn't refer to an non-existent province of Ulster, it gives the voting district for the UK parliament, it shows the police and fire service details, it refers to post code, rather than "postal code", and the map frankly is nicer, it doesn't show NI as a floating island. Informationally it is fully and more correct in terms of geographic details and political status. Looking at the [description, "Any settlement in the UK" simple shows it's correct. If you manage your goal of a united Ireland then the Ireland Town info box would be accurate to use, but until then the UK info box is the only correct one (to my mind) to use, and frankly all the NI cities and towns should be using it, and from the history of people reverting your politically motivated changes with regards to info boxes I'm not the only one to thing this. --Blowdart 05:46, 21 September 2007 (UTC)

NI Infobox idea

Fair use rationale for Image:Glen.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Glen.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Swatragh.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Swatragh.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 07:04, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

Place of birth and Lderry

I know the whole Lderry issue is a major pain in the ass but dodgeing the place of birth altogether such as the majority in Category:Derry_Gaelic_footballers isn't correct, I'm going to running AWB tonight and add the place of birth and country of birth to the infobox i will also change the intro to a standard such as Eoin "Skinner" Bradley (Irish: Eoin Ó Brolcháin) is an Irish Gaelic footballer from Londonderry,Northern Ireland who plays for his native DerryGnevin (talk) 10:16, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

I 100% agree with you but the minute you/we starting using Derry we will have people changing all the link citing a "comprise" which it appears no one ever agreed too, i don't add the intro line i'll just add the infobox Gnevin (talk) 18:47, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

Protection at Vintagekits

Just letting you know I've fully protected User:Vintagekits for three days. Since the talk page in this case probably isn't an ideal location for discussion, I started a thread at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard#Brief protection at User:Vintagekits. Will leave everybody I see as involved in the dispute the same message. Feel free to comment. :) – Luna Santin (talk) 09:57, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Glack.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Glack.jpg.

Thank you. Wizardman 04:50, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

Sport pissing match on Coleraine

So given the population demographics, and the position of Coleraine FC in the football league, as opposed to the placing of CLG Eoghan Rua rather far down its set of leagues, the age of both teams then really why the insistance CLG Eoghan Rua comes first? --Blowdart | talk 07:33, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Ballinderry.PNG}

Thank you for uploading Image:Ballinderry.PNG. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check:

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. Reversion

Hi there. I noticed you reverted vandalism on Kevin McCloy with this edit. However I also notice that you only reverted three of the four edits, but accidentally left the one that stated County Derry, Ireland instead of County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. I spotted the mistake and fixed it for you. Canterbury Tail talk 01:20, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

You going to finish this GA review? Just noticed how long it's been on hold. Wizardman 19:06, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi, sorry for not replying sooner (I haven't had much time to spare for Wikipedia lately). There is just one small issue left with Enda Muldoon, which I've mentioned on the talk page. Bláthnaid talk 13:39, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

Notice

Hey cheers for some updates on Peter Canavan. You seem to have got the info from a printed source, so your references need changing slightly. Instead of having a date retrieved (which is useful for web resources to find out if they are likely to be still alive), try to put the page numbers on the citation. I think it can be dones by simply adding pages=|. THanks --Macca7174talk 11:42, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Is there any particular reason that they focus on 2004?? If there is could it be summed into one sentence or anything, such as "In 2004, he was particularly prolific scoring..."--Macca7174talk 12:12, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

Unidentified player

Fairly certain that's Maurice Gorman. Plays with The Nire/Fourmilewater GAA. Nice picture by the way. Could also have been Mark Gorman but he was playing in a senior hurling semi-final at the weekend. ManfromDelmonte (talk) 01:06, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

Re: your edit to Ryan Giggs

FYI, Paul Scholes was not involved in the 1999 Champions League final, Gary Neville was not involved in the 2008 Champions League final and John O'Shea had not made his United debut when they won in 1999. You are correct about Wes Brown though; even though he did not play in the final in 1999, he was on the bench. – PeeJay 00:15, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
