bots

Hi Dr.K our conversation has attracted bots and trolls. I received the following comment claimed to be by you, but I dont think you are related to whatsoever. https://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Stevepeterson&diff=623803634&oldid=623803114 Stevepeterson (talk) 04:48, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

Thank you Steve, but no bots are involved, just trolls and socks. If you click on this you can see that the troll/sock who visited your talkpage is already blocked. Best regards. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 04:54, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

Fluff

Dr.K., thanks for reverting the anon who typed in answers to some of the redundancy exercieses. I'll put a highlight note in the lead about not typing in answers. Tony (talk) 06:17, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

Don't mention it Tony. It was my pleasure. I'm a fan of your notes so I wasn't very pleased to see the anon(s) giving the answers and also destroying some of the formatting. I wasn't sure if they were taking the exercises or simply vandalising or both. :) Take care and keep up the good work. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 06:25, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

Good call! I should have looked myself for those quaint and promotional phrases. They're copied from all over the place. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 02:43, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

Anytime Doc. Thank you for reverting this spam in the first place. Take care. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 02:50, 4 September 2014 (UTC)
There's a bit more to it--see, for instance, User talk:142.150.48.206. This is a longterm problem. Drmies (talk) 17:54, 4 September 2014 (UTC)
I see. At least now, since the problem has been identified, the IP can be blocked if they continue. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 17:58, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

Re: Mail

Could you please re-send it? I've just checked email at the account I use for Wikipedia, and there's nothing from you in the inbox or in the junk mail. I have a couple of emails from Risker with oversight, but that's all I've gotten through that email account. Nyttend (talk) 05:05, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

Great pictures

Are you from Corfú? I visited the island two years ago, and I absolutely loved it. It was impresive to see so many beautiful and masive cypress, some of them seemed to be growing out of the bare rock. We visited some great coves. The color and transparency of the water was also incredible. But I missed the Palaio Frourio, after seeing those great pictures on your userpage, I will have to go back. Crystallizedcarbon (talkcontribs) 17:47, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi Crystallizedcarbon. Thank you very much for your kind comments about my pictures. I really appreciate them, especially since they involve my photography. :) Indeed, Palaio Frourio is a remarkable place, especially since its architecture is adjacent to the sea. The contrast between the artificial and natural makes it a nice place to photograph. It has its own marina and beach and one can swim all around its perimeter and the water is clear. It's like swimming in history. I go there whenever I have the chance. :) Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 18:21, 5 September 2014 (UTC)
WOW the photos are definitely postcard material, very professional! I agree, it really looks like a remarkable place. I love swimming and diving, so going back to visit is in my to do list! --Crystallizedcarbon (talk) 19:35, 5 September 2014 (UTC)
I never thought they were postcard quality, but thank you very much for the kind comment. It is greatly appreciated. Have fun when you go there. :) Take care. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 21:34, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

Don't do that please. Thanks. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 17:44, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

Ok, but keep on mind that I my edits are keep getting deleted, even though they are well sourced and real, and they are also reporting me and threatening me for those. The result is having propaganda articles against Cyprus, something that is totally unfair and unacceptable and me getting blocked for adding well sourced truths. — Preceding unsigned comment added by GiorgosY (talkcontribs) 18:10, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

AfD of Northern Cyprus

Don't do that please. Thanks. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 17:44, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

I understand Giorgos. But the answer is not to escalate things in response. Try to discuss with the opposing editors instead of clicking the revert/undo button. That way you will be more respected and far less likely to get blocked. If you continue edit-warring you will reach a stage where you will get blocked for a long time or even for an indefinite time. Try to slow down and discuss things. Otherwise, my opinion is that it doesn't look good for you at the moment. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 18:17, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

I have tried to discuss with them, got threats for it, and all my edits were well sourced, logical and truthful with no lies on what so ever. Wikipedia articles on Cyprus do not look good at the moment, since they are lacking reality, truth and a more realistic way of presenting things plus that are full with turkish propaganda, like the 1571 one. Anyhow, I will see what I am going to do. — Preceding unsigned comment added by GiorgosY (talkcontribs) 18:35, 18 September 2014 (UTC)

Alexyflemming and Panagra, Girne

Thank you for the message. I haven't had the time to check into this latest POV-push from that editor. You can start a request for comment, see WP:RFC. And yes, this editor also has problems recognising the Armenian Genocide. He rejects that it happened and mentions his rejection any chance he gets lately. I've just noticed he's created a bunch of duplicates like [2] and [3]. Why, I cannot guess. 31.153.94.214 (talk) 00:37, 4 October 2014 (UTC)
This has got to stop. He is using unilaterally the Turkish names with no reference to the historical name and creates duplicate entries to pre-existing articles. This is not good at all. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 00:51, 4 October 2014 (UTC)
Well, I've just had to redirect 9. Some like "İsmet Paşa" I've not been able to match with any existing articles; they're either post-war renames or entirely new settlements. 31.153.94.214 (talk) 01:12, 4 October 2014 (UTC)
Thank you for providing me with the background which has given me a much better picture of what is being attempted. I have left another warning at the talkpage of this editor concerning the use of his template. He has to follow the correct process of approving the use of this controversial template or the template has to be scrapped. Thank you again. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 01:38, 4 October 2014 (UTC)

@Random86: I clicked on the first link, I clicked on "profile" but there are no clickable names after that. I took this to the talkpage of Drmies so he can give us his opinion on that. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 21:50, 6 October 2014 (UTC)
@Dr.K.: The names are clickable. They are underneath the menu at the top of the page. --Random86 (talk) 21:54, 6 October 2014 (UTC)
@Random86: Chrome needed a plugin, but IE works. I saw the clickable names there. I will fix that. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 22:07, 6 October 2014 (UTC)

Wordpress?

Those birthday source in the Exo article are Wordpress fan sites. Are you sure it's not better to remove them and put citation needed?--Krystaleen 03:25, 13 October 2014 (UTC)

@Krystaleen: As I said in my edit summary, either the birthdays go completely, or stay and are supported by that weak source at least until a better one is found. The wordpress reference also hosts what appears to be magazine pictures of some kind, so the source may be a magazine, even though it is hosted on a wordpress site. The option of citation needed for birthdays in K-pop articles is not a good one because it will spread to many more articles and that would be a disaster. For more details as to why so, please see a recent comment I made. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 03:40, 13 October 2014 (UTC)

Moving an article

Hi Dr.K.,

I'm wondering if you could help me with moving Ayia Marina, Cyprus to Agia Marina (Skylloura), Nicosia. There's another Agia Marina in Nicosia; this one's spelt differently (a g in place of the y) simply so that they won't conflict, but that's confusing. The Agia Marina council and others qualify it with 'Skylloura'. I tried asking over at WP:RMT, but it's too long a reason for the move, and I don't think it'd be worth initiating a requested move over it. 31.153.94.183 (talk) 16:26, 17 October 2014 (UTC)

Hi IP editor. No problem, but if we use "Skylloura" for disambiguation I don't think we need "Nicosia". Also "Agia" is spelled "Aghia" normally. Please let me know what you think. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 16:42, 17 October 2014 (UTC)
Hi Dr. Well, we generally seem to be using the spelling 'Agia' here on Wikipedia. Agreeing on a naming convention to use for Cypriot settlements would go a long way. For example, we've got Ayia Marina Khrysokhous (different translit. scheme and disambiguator outside parens), Agios Georgios Lefkas (disambiguator outside parens and inflected) and Agios Ioannis (Pyrgos) (disambiguator inside parens). The Cypriot government uses 'Agia Marina Chrysochous', 'Agia Marina Kelokedaron' and 'Agia Marina Xyliatou' for the other Agia Marinas in the country. 31.153.94.183 (talk) 17:13, 17 October 2014 (UTC)
Hi IP editor.  Done. Is that ok now? Btw, I'll be out for a few hours so I will not be able to respond for some time. If you have any suggestions please let me know and I will implement any needed changes. Take care and thank you. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 18:13, 17 October 2014 (UTC)

Çamlıköy mess

Hi again Dr,

In my continuing effort to bring some sense to articles of places in Cyprus, I've discovered that a user's created many duplicates (of unclear veracity) for Çamlıköy. Besides the original article (I assume) at Kalo Chorio (Çamlıköy), we've also got:

All of this for a village of barely 300 people. I wonder if you've got any suggestions on how to proceed. Thanks, 93.109.171.237 (talk) 19:10, 21 October 2014 (UTC)

What a mess. Thank you IP editor for alerting me to this. I have redirected all of them to the original article and left a note on the creator's page. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 20:19, 21 October 2014 (UTC)
Thank you. I've copied over some of the history from Çamlıköy, but I've still no idea how accurate any of it might be. 93.109.171.237 (talk) 20:41, 21 October 2014 (UTC)
Thank you very much. As far as the historical background, it can be tagged for verification or removed altogether if citations cannot be found. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 20:50, 21 October 2014 (UTC)

In other developments...

User:The Banner accused me of 'POV-bickering', unilaterally decided that Karavostasi should be moved to Gemikonagi, passing it off as a revert ('changed mergeproposal back to Gemikonagi'), and claiming it to be part of North Cyprus, a term we don't seem to generally use. [5] I'd have approached The Banner, but judging by our previous contact, I think it'd be a waste of time. Anyway, I don't expect you to do anything about it, Dr; I just wanted to vent. 213.7.147.34 (talk) 13:27, 3 November 2014 (UTC)

I could also have used the term editwarring. And I repeat my request to you to take a username. Actually, that makes you more anonymous than an IP (no direct geolocation).
And I wrote that the harbour is located in North Cyprus (as being on the north side of Cyprus), not in Northern Cyprus. Just as Belfast is located on Ireland but not in Ireland. (the first link is about the island, the second one is about the state). The Banner talk 13:37, 3 November 2014 (UTC)
as being on the north side of Cyprus ... Then why did you capitalise north? To most people, North Cyprus means Northern Cyprus. 213.7.147.34 (talk) 13:42, 3 November 2014 (UTC)
Nothing human is strange to me, even typos or bad sentences. It is now corrected. The new text is on the north side of the island Cyprus. (with Cyprus referring to the island, not the state). The Banner talk 13:46, 3 November 2014 (UTC)
Ok, will you say why you moved that article? If you think we should use the Turkish name of settlements in Northern Cyprus, this isn't the way to go about it. 213.7.147.34 (talk) 13:48, 3 November 2014 (UTC)
And that is exactly what I hammered as POV-bickering. The daily truth is that the northern side of the island is another state than the other 75 or so percent. That state claims to be Turkish and uses Turkish names. We have to live with that until both states on the island are reunited (what can take a while). The Banner talk 13:54, 3 November 2014 (UTC)
You're conveniently forgetting that nearly every other place in Northern Cyprus is the transliteration of its Greek name. Don't you think that this might be a change that you should've discussed? Also, I insisted on the Greek name for no other reason than that it was the name of the article. What part of that is 'POV-bickering'? 213.7.147.34 (talk) 13:57, 3 November 2014 (UTC)
You forget that the geolocation of your IP points to a connection in south Cyprus, what makes a possible bias not an unlikely option. The Banner talk 14:03, 3 November 2014 (UTC)
So your argument boils down to an ad hominem. Thanks for taking the time to clear things up. 213.7.147.34 (talk) 14:05, 3 November 2014 (UTC)
You may call it that way, I just vent my opinion how you deal with this hot and sometimes emotional item. The Banner talk 14:08, 3 November 2014 (UTC)
Yes, making someone upset by insisting they're biased 'cause of their origin, and then claiming they're upset exactly because they're biased is the best kind of manipulative antics. 213.7.147.34 (talk) 14:15, 3 November 2014 (UTC)
All of this is completely unnecessary. The IP editor has done some great work on Cyprus-related subjects and onomatology and should be shown respect for his excellent contributions and not be subjected to ad-hominems. And mentioning the IP editor's geolocation as an indication of a possible POV is unjustified and uncivil. Also, putting pressure on him to get a username is an not acceptable practice on Wikipedia and should stop. I also support his position on Cyprus onomatology. WP:COMMONNAME is the relevant policy here which states that we don't use official names but the English language commonnames. But this discussion does not belong here. It belongs at the article talk. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 16:34, 3 November 2014 (UTC)

Just a note that he's now crossed the line over to WP:POINTy. [6] 213.7.147.34 (talk) 18:58, 4 November 2014 (UTC)

No, mr. IP. I am not pointy. I realize very well that emotions and POV have taken over from reason. Have fun with it. The Banner talk 19:01, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
No, you're being disruptive and POINTy. You're trying to abuse process to get your way. Nobody's been taken over by emotions, but my patience is running very thin indeed. 213.7.147.34 (talk) 19:04, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
Banner, please. I don't see any emotional crisis. Let this cool down a bit. Thanks. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 19:18, 4 November 2014 (UTC)

Question

Hello there Dr. K, sorry to disturb you but I have a quick question about a contribution that you reverted. When I put what I had put there, you said that it was unsupported by citations. May I please ask why? Thanks, Vacationlandman (talk) 04:09, 6 November 2014 (UTC)

Wasn't that obvious? Did you read my edit-summary? "continues to severely affect the economy" unsupported by citations. The citations were from 2012 and 2013. Now we have 2014. How can citations from one or two years ago claim that [it] "continues to severely affect the economy"? This is obviously unsupported WP:ORIGINALRESEARCH. Conclusion: You cannot project conclusions to the future based on references from a year or two years ago. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 04:16, 6 November 2014 (UTC)
Alright, alright. I'm sorry. Vacationlandman (talk) 04:20, 6 November 2014 (UTC)
It was not a big deal. No need to apologise. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 04:44, 6 November 2014 (UTC)

Efcharisto, yiatre,

for nice words, I'm almost blushing. You have also given me some "Thank you"-notes from time to time, which I appreciate. I spend more time on my national Wikipedia, but can often not resist to butt in here when I see extreme POV-pushing, and sometimes it just takes off, like recently in Cyprus. And for the record, I have great respect for your tireless work in Wikipedia. Take care! --T*U (talk) 10:21, 6 November 2014 (UTC)

Hi T*U. Thank you very much for your kind words which, as they originate from an editor I greatly respect, are really appreciated. I greatly value and respect your well-considered opinions, to the point that I consider them as a de facto point of reference for me from which I inform my own opinion. It is really fortunate that you keep an eye on POV-pushing in Cyprus-related articles, because without your longterm advice and editing help in that area, the subject would have become a walled garden of extremist POV. You too take care and I hope you continue to provide your much-needed advice. By the way, my title comes from my ph.d. degree in Engineering, I'm not a medical one. :) Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 17:42, 6 November 2014 (UTC)
I second this sentiment. I've always enjoyed your argumentation, TU-nor, and you often seem to be able to get down to the core of issues a lot easier than I can. 213.7.147.34 (talk) 19:00, 6 November 2014 (UTC)
Your arguments have also impressed me greatly. A recent eloquent example comes to mind, and that's not counting the many other excellent contributions you have made. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 19:34, 6 November 2014 (UTC)
And I second that! --T*U (talk) 19:50, 6 November 2014 (UTC)

Another of Alexy's OR maps

It's funny how an expert on Northern Cyprus would mix up a village west of Kyrenia with an ancient town on the tip of the Karpass Peninsula. The map's still included in one other article, but I've not checked if any of the rest of it is OR too yet. 83.168.23.138 (talk) 12:52, 13 November 2014 (UTC)

Typical MO of the self-declared expert. Thank you for your hard work continuing to clean up after his edits. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 17:16, 13 November 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. I've redirected that article back to Religion in Cyprus. Do you think we can delete that map now that it's no longer used? 83.168.23.138 (talk) 22:29, 13 November 2014 (UTC)
The map is on Commons, and there they have different criteria and processes for deletion. I don't think original research is one of them. Except OR, is there something else wrong with it? Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 02:05, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
Well, he's based it off this map, but he's not given attribution and released it in the public domain, which he's not allowed to do. Also, I noticed that his EEZ map was deleted for being 'out of project scope'. I just don't want someone who might stumble upon his map put it back in one of these articles, thinking it's accurate. 83.168.23.138 (talk) 02:26, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
Unfortunately the GFDL attribution can be added after the fact, and it is not a reason for deletion. To be deleted it has to be a copyvio from an unfree file, which is not the case here. Not sure what, if anything, can be done in this case. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 03:35, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
Normally, only the author can relicense their work. Anyway, thanks, Dr. 83.168.23.138 (talk) 10:53, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
You are very welcome IP editor. Thank you again for your hard work and for finding the original work the file derived from. I may ask a few questions around as soon as I get the chance. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 17:53, 14 November 2014 (UTC)

copyvio

Hello Dr.K., just let you know that book you mentioned as a copyvio is entirely written by Wikipedia articles, not the other way around. Uspzor (talk) 05:01, 14 November 2014 (UTC)

@Uspzor: Thank you Uspzor. Ok, but in that case, I checked the Lulu book publication date and it was in 2012. The material however was added recently to the article. Where did that material come from? There was also some close paraphrasing from the Kershaw book, and that book is not a copy from Wikipedia. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 05:13, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
Actually I reinserted a little bit of the content that was recently removed that I considered important to the scope of the article. I suppose the publication is based on an old version of the page where its present. About the Kershaw book I don't know, probably it's the thin line between inspiration and plagiarism. Uspzor (talk) 05:37, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
I see. The material you added was actually previously in the article and you reinstated it. That should explain the text in the book by Lulu publications. I have changed the Kershaw sentence to avoid the close paraphrasing, so it should be clean now. I'll let Dianna know. Thank you for letting me know. Best regards. Δρ.Κ. λόγοςπράξις 05:57, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
Actually Kershaw's copyvio was really bad. Word for word copy-paste for whole paragraphs. It wasn't even a thin line. It was an eight-lane Autobahn of copyvio. Δρ.Κ.

Thanatos|talk|contributions 10:30, 18 November 2014 (UTC)

LOL.

ΥΓ Παρεμπιπτόντως είχες αντιγράψει τo ΟCR κείμενο-α που ήταν λάθος προφανώς (επιβεβαίωση με From inside the book: search-> Albanopolis). Το διόρθωσα στο άρθρο. Thanatos|talk|contributions 19:27, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
