USRD Inactivity check and news report

[edit]

Hello, Freechild. We had a few urgent matters to communicate to you:

  1. Please update your information at Wikipedia:WikiProject U.S. Roads/Participants, our new centralized participant list. Those who have not done so by October 20th will be removed.
  2. There are important discussions taking place at WT:USRD relating to whether WP:USRD, WP:HWY, or the state projects should hold the "power" in the roads projects.

Sure thing!

[edit]

Sure thing, dear Freechild, I'll be happy too :) Just be aware that I'm a little behind schedule at the moment, so it'd help my task a lot if you could give me a few pointers in terms of colors, layour preferences, and such. Needless to say that's not asolutely necessary, but unfortunately I'll take me alittle longer to figure it out all by myself ;) Love, Phaedriel - 06:06, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Transportation in Omaha

[edit]

I've looked at it and I think it's all right. I will say that when refering to any of Omaha's numbered streets to use ordinal numbers instead of cardinal numbers and it also explains, to me, at least, who H.W.S. Cleveland was. (H.W.S. Cleveland Street is a new street in far west Omaha.) There's some stuff about railroads I am not an expert about, though. DandyDan2007 19:45, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You could possibly add a section about early water transportation. I also saw something else I can fix. DandyDan2007 19:49, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I-80 in Nebraska

[edit]

I haven't had a chance to really look it over, but I will say it looks far more impressive than what I would have done. I know the WP:USRD people really would like an exit list and if I can make enough time, I could do that. I would cut down on the major junction list as well. On the whole, I might even make a DYK nomination about it. DandyDan2007 23:39, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mountain lists

[edit]

Hi, Freechild. List of peaks named Bear Mountain is an article in an well-established framework: it is a set index article: a way to disambiguate between mountains, with enough information to inform editors and readers about which peaks are which. This specialized style of disambiguation-like list article was established years ago by Wikipedia:WikiProject Mountains#Naming conventions.

If you are objecting to this sort of list article, I would bring it up at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Mountains. hike395 02:28, 25 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You are a racist, blindly defending someone because they are black shows you are ignorant. This is Omaha NE not Hollywood CA. "I untied my hands before the building blew up" give me a break. If it wasn't for Frank and Ernie this wouldn't have died. How about I paid to much for my building and had no customers so I thought I would blow up my building and then blame whitey. Freedom Park

[edit]

The links you added to the USS Marlin (SST-2) and USS Hazard (AM-240) are to the wrong Freedom Park. There is no article on Freedom Park, Omaha on Wikipedia. Regards Oldfarm 02:39, 7 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

According to the history for USS Hazard (AM-240), you (Added wiklinks to caption on image)- if you click on the Freedom Park tag, you are transfered to Freedom Park, an outdoor museum in Arlington, Virginia. On a closer look, I see nothing on USS Marlin (SST-2). Regards Oldfarm 05:20, 7 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I just wanted to mention that it was cool that I found Clarence W. Wigington within Special:Newpages, a location where I usually find a lot of crap. As you mentioned in the article, he designed a lot of notable structures within St. Paul. Apparently, he made a pretty good name for himself here. I added a picture of the Highland Park Tower. African Americans in Omaha; History of Omaha

[edit]

Thanks for your comments. You've done so much good work! I've just started reading your other articles, so it will take me some time to get through them. As I'm not familiar with Omaha, my comments will relate to being able to follow your articles. I agree that the history of African Americans is underrepresented in many areas on wikipedia - my impression is that history is overlooked on many county and city pages (but history is my interest.)

On the History of Omaha, I think some additions about what was happening with the economy and population numbers may help provide more context - you have many names, dates and facts, but sometimes it's hard for me to hold them together. From my reading and research elsewhere, it looks as if Omaha had some typical issues, with many new European immigrants and African American migrants from the South, mostly all from rural cultures, suddenly coming together in a new place and competing for industrial work and housing. (For instance, Detroit had a similar pattern of booming growth, together with white migrants from the South adding to the volatility of the mix, in the early 20th c.) DYK hook

[edit]

I offered an alternate DYK hook suggestion (hope you don't mind) because I think the Highland Park Tower is so beautiful. --Mattisse 17:00, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's your article and please feel free to change the hook as you like. I don't have time this minute to look at the article, but I will later today. Just what you had in the article before was enough to show that he was extraordinary. --Mattisse 22:26, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You say "at least five buildings" in the hook and in the article you say four buildings. What is the "at least" about? Are you thinking that there are more around that you don't know about? I would say that four is good enough, if that is the case, and get rid of the "at least" -- weakens the statement, in my opinion, of course! --Mattisse 00:03, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I was trying to find some definition of "municipal architect". Do you mean that he never designed homes? --Mattisse 00:31, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

NHL article tips / Nebraska articles

[edit]

Hi Freechild. Glad to see you are editing the List of National Historic Landmarks in Nebraska articles. I wrote up some tips on creating NHL articles for myself, at [[1]], wonder if any of those would help you. Glancing at a couple of the new articles, I notice they lack the NHL designation date which you can hand add to the NRHP infobox. And lack the NHL summary link. And there is useful I'd appreciate hearing back from you on my Talk page if you check the "recipe" and find anything useful, or really any comments would be welcome. I would be very happy to answer questions on my talk page. Looking good on your Nebraska work, keep up the good work! doncram 08:32, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again. FYI, I edited the List of National Historic Landmarks in Nebraska page just now to add geocode information and more in an expanded table format, bringing all your work into the revised table. I hope you can keep going with creating the Nebraska NHL articles. I liked what you were doing before. Cheers. doncram 01:52, 22 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Got your message back, sorry you haven't gotten much feedback on your NRHP articles. I see you have a long list of NRHP article creations at your userpage. Have you been announcing your new articles in the section for that on the WP:NRHP main page? You can simply announce them one by one in the list on the main page there, which many do monitor and your articles will be seen right away. I find that I get some feedback immediately thereafter, either by comments to my talkpage or more often by edits to the article announced (which is feedback too). Or, you can ask specifically for feedback on the corresponding talk page, where a lot happens. doncram 05:47, 22 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at a few of the articles you've worked on, I see you have gathered up good data and that the articles are real contributions. A small thing to improve upon, perhaps, is that I see you have included NRHP infoboxes in some that are relatively sparse. It looks like you might be hand-generating the infoboxes, as I did for a while. So, do you know about the Elkman NRHP infobox generator, created by Elkman? It is based on a download of NRIS data and is a real help with quickly making complete NRHP infoboxes. I read about that in the talk page at WP:NRHP. That is just a source for the infobox, for most NRHP articles it can be hard to find other sources of information to fill them out more. I myself have been specializing in creating articles on NHLs for many states covered in List of National Historic Landmarks by state. For NHLs, there are always additional sources available (the NHL summary, the NPS text and photo sets, mentioned in my tips sheet that I refered to before), but many of the articles I create are stubs without photos and with little text. I like your spirit in asserting you'll contribute to all of the Nebraska NHL articles that are needed, and hope that you will. If I get around to creating stubs for some of them before you do, I hope you will continue to develop them. Cheers, doncram 05:47, 22 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting new wiki advice in Baltimore, Maryland

[edit]

Dear Freechild,

First off, congratulations on all the work that you do for Wikipedia and the Omaha Wiki. We picked up your name on OW while researching city wikis for our own site in Baltimore ...

http://www.BaltimoreCollective.org

We (my girlfriend and I) would be very grateful if we could communicate with you a bit about starting up a community wiki from scratch. My background is in visual arts and computers, hers is in science writing.

Some of our initial concerns are about (as I'm sure you can relate) ...

Getting more users onboard. Do simplicity and wysiwig text editors help newbies to get acclimated, a`la the very successful Davis Wiki, or is MediaWiki more of a draw with it's familiar and sophisticated interface? We were shocked that Omaha could generate over 4,000 articles in it's first year. Even 1,000 is astounding.

Our wiki is explicitly more 'alternative', but we also share your own interest in neighborhood com- munities, Underground Railroad history, etc.

So far we have been testing on Wikia, Tiki-Wiki and Wikispaces over the past year. Our efforts were reported in Baltimore's free weekly City Paper ...

http://cpgo.citypaper.com/arts/story.asp?id=13464

We would be very grateful if you would reply to us.

Thank you, (Personal info) ...

Leslie Smith

[edit]

Hi there! How goes it? (I'm nearing the end of Notable Rhodes Scholars, but have been doing income tax - yuk!. On Saturday the whole family is off to http://www.dunk-island.com for a week!)

Changing subject - I've been asked a question I can't seem to answer. Can you help?
Thanks and cheers, Pdfpdf 02:41, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm trying to figure out where you found Leslie Smith's middle name; except for some of your articles and one other site that doesn't make the connection clear, the most substantiative references I can find online are to "Leslie O. Smith".
Any pointers? –Unint 00:32, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
(Sharp intake of breath.) Good question! I'm afraid I can't remember where I saw it.
I can remember seeing "Leslie O. Smith" many times, so on the occasion that I saw "Orlando", I noted it. But as I said, I'm afraid I can't remember where I saw it. (And, of course, now I can't find that reference!)
I'll ask Freechild - he's good at finding things - and get back to you. Cheers, Pdfpdf 02:27, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for looking. I'll get back to you when I return from my week of tropical luxury! Regards, Pdfpdf 12:44, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding your edits to Omaha Easter Sunday Tornado (1913)

[edit]

Thank you for adding significant amounts of information to the article about the Omaha Easter Sunday Tornado (1913), however you put on a section header "Landafall in the city". You may gotten tornadoes confused with hurricanes. Many people do this, but please, if you are unsure about any terminology with any edits you make to a severe weather related article just ask either me or any other of the WikiProject Severe Weather members. Racial Tension in Omaha

[edit]

Thanks for your comments, Freechild. You've done so much good work! I think my perspective comes from having done my own research and reading in books about other areas and issues (like labor movements and violence related to strikebreakers, regardless of race.) It's important to have race issues considered along with the economic and other pressures, as it is often more complex. You've developed some really good material on many complex subjects, especially considering you no longer live there. I'd be glad to work with you on the Omaha articles. The encyclopedia form is challenging and compressed!--Parkwells 18:33, 6 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Multiple "Gold Coast Historic District"s

[edit]

The NR lists 3 Gold Coast Historic Districts:

  • Cook County, Chicago, Illinios
  • Douglas County, Omaha, Nebraska
  • Benton County, Richland, Washington

I think a disambig page is in order. Any objections to moving your page to Gold Coast Historic District (Omaha) or some such name? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Eoghanacht (talkcontribs) 21:32, 7 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Slavery in Nebraska; Mayhew Cabin and Farm

[edit]

Hi Freechild - I worked on editing these two articles, which I thought you might have written.

You made some of the same assumptions as the sources on the Mayhew Cabin - in terms of giving John Kagi all the credit. Clearly he couldn't have made it work without his sister and brother-in-law's support and probably their physical work - to create the dugout, make food, clothing, etc., so I changed the article to give them some credit. You may want to consider giving them more. The farm was a partnership and the woman didn't only cook. The whole enterprise was risky and Barbara and Allen Mayhew had to be supporters to make it work.

One of the changes I made most often was to switch sentences around to active voice. It makes it easier to follow who's doing what, and is livelier. Keep up the good work - you've put up so many articles! Since the Mayhew Cabin is so historic, it would be great if you can find a photo of it, or have someone there take one you could use. Maybe you could contact someone at the church to do so. Will get back to other Omaha articles later. --Parkwells 16:14, 8 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Civil Rights Movement in Omaha

[edit]

You're educating me and making me more curious. What else happened after national civil rights legislation? Not just that there are still problems in Omaha, but what changes happened? they may be hard to trace from a distance. You noted an African American became police chief. How did the composition of the police force change, if it did? What are the current demographics in the city? For example, in other cities, some African Americans got educations, different kinds of jobs, and some moved out of the all-African American inner city neighborhoods over time, to newer housing, moving to suburbs like so many other Americans, or they moved to other cities where there were more jobs. Some made businesses there or took businesses with them (a pattern William Julius Wilson showed in Chicago.) Those might be elements to try to add. I'll see what I can find out, too.--Parkwells 13:56, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

State/Local Histories - African Americans in Omaha

[edit]
I know what you mean about the sort of "lily white" history - it's what got me working in Wikipedia in the first place. After studying a lot of influential social history, I was surprised to see that much of the last two or three decades of important historical work was little reflected in many basic articles on state and county histories in Wikipedia - where it belongs in my opinion, fully part of the story. The histories of many states are limited to quick surveys of founding, the Civil War and battles, Reconstruction, and after, mostly with a few political and military leaders mentioned. So I've been going through the Southern states first, to add at least the population and demographics in 1860 so that enslaved African Americans show up in all their numbers, and am adding more material gradually about contributions, origins, migrations, etc. It's hard to convey the complex issues on which books have been written in an encyclopedia format, but at least we can get some material up. As you note, it's all a process. We're part of education - --Parkwells 15:40, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Catron County template

[edit]

I've removed the non-community information from the Catron County template for two reasons:

  • This type of information is not typically placed on a county template.
  • This information is generally placed on a separate template, which for Catron County is located on this template.

What do you think? I'd prefer it if you replied on my talk page please. Nyttend 14:37, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What would you prefer then: that both templates be on every single page? Sorry, but I'm not sure whether I'm reading your words rightly. Nyttend 19:28, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Can you email me at ecohen@netshops.com ?

[edit]

Okay, I realize now I should have left reference links to the sources I was leaving information at, I apologize - I'm sure it's a source of constant frustration. Would you mind giving me the basic guidelines for how to post references/citations? Nearly everything I added to that page came from a source found on the internet, I'd like to have it posted. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ecohen0783 (talkcontribs) 00:39, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
